Thanks, I have just engaged Legacy mode, I think it'll be really useful!
-
I didnt know about that mode but think it might suit me quite well since I find going ‘down’ patches with a double press a bit tricky. How do I engage that mode? I can then put my favourite ten patches in a bank…

And as I implied, your partiality is your call. I know you'll be right either way and point that out. Bye

I think filters must be among the most subjective effects out there! I notice that the Ampero Mini filter is called the 'Toucher' but the full sized version has one called 'Dynamic Basso' which may be much better. Toucher has a bass ode but it just reacts very weirdly and it doesn't;t feel as if the dynamics are controllable on the instrument, kind of hard to explain.. one thing I have remembered is that the phaser sounds great, but I don't use them much.
-
This is indeed the case, as with any piece of gear we discuss here. If you'd like to trust the opinions of others without trying it yourself, that's your call, but I'm sure we're all keen for you to confirm for us all one way or another.

I was disappointed with the Hotone Ampere Mini - it sounded really nice for clean sounds and the OD was OK, but the octave and filters were terrible. I know it's the last generation but I have multi effects from several decades before this which are a thousand times better sounding. That said, the interface was great, as was the build and feel.

I am sort of the opposite, and mostly use up mode, however I have started experimenting with the down side. My Bassballs is more of a down filter which has a really slow sweep so it can be very expressive (digging in slightly really changes the note). I have found that some down filters don't do much at the front of the note and sweep to quickly for my taste. However, the Mutron III+ has some internal switches to adjust this and I recently spent some time dealing it in so that all I need to do is flip the switch and it's in the right range.

Yeah there are loads, and it’s great fun trying them. I think the Bass IQ is a great choice and may be all you’ll ever need. I’ve seen pretty much every filter on basschat over the years so buying used you’ll never be short of pedals to try! If I wasn’t going for the EBS I’d probably try the new Nano Qtron. BTW there are two versions of the Mutron, the original Musitronics version (says Musitronics on the bottom left near footswitch) which are crazy expensive because ‘vintage’ but then there’s the Haz Labs ‘reissue’ which can be had for a fair bit less, and I like them both as much as each other, maybe the reissue slightly more in some ways. I bet you’ll love the EBS so let us know how you get on.

Sorry, I missed this - they're from IKEA!

Do you find your playing limited by your tastes?

Maybe you should spend more time over there then? -
I think I posted this elsewhere but: This is the list of filters I have had (not including those built in to various multi fx): Had and sold: Mini Qtron FX25 (sparkle) MXR M87 3Leaf Wonderlove 3Leaf Proton V4 Meridian Funk-u-lator Mr Black Fwonkbeta Aguilar Filter Twin Chunk Syatems Octavius Squeezer Maxon AF9 Lovetone Meatball Solid Gold FX Supa Funk Currently have: Mutron III Bassballs Green Russian Mutron III+ Qtron Qtron+ Bassballs USA FX25 (light green V1) Xotic Robotalk 2 I think my all time faves and the ones on my board are the Mutron III+ as well as the original and the Green Bassballs. Trouble is there are so many things to take into consideration - the bass you put into the pedal, your dynamics, how you amplify.. some of the pedals I sold ages ago may sound better with my current setup. But I'm definitely happy with the Mutron sound, something about the lack of anything harsh and the usefulness of the range switch.

I absolutely live and breathe envelope filters lol. After trying nearly all of them I have come to the conclusion that every filter reacts differently to every instrument you use it with, and that also depends on the player's style and attack. As such it's really hard to recommend any given filter because even some of my favourites sound better with some basses than others. As said above, it's a slippery but funky slope and you won't lose anything by trying out as many used examples of all the different types as you can. Can I also recommend that you keep your first one, because it's annoying to realise that you liked that one best all along when you're about 20 filters through the journey!

I wouldn't be surprised if that's the next step

I thought I'd just mention these Yamaha WL500 headphones as I haven't seen anything posted about them elsewhere. They were developed by Yamaha and Line6 and offer full wireless capability aimed at musicians. https://uk.yamaha.com/en/products/musical_instruments/guitars_basses/amps_accessories/yh-wl500/index.html I recently bought a pair of Yamaha YH-L700A headphones and they are stunning... I came across these when looking at their site and was amazed I hadn't heard about them before. Given how impressed I am with the 700's for listening to music, I am naturally intrigued about these, which are called the YH-WL500 (catchy) Thought it might be useful for some, as I have seen a few threads recently asking about playing bass through wireless headphones (normally people assume bluetooth would work but there's too much latency) Cheers ped

All cool - I might have changed mine if I felt like my comp wasn't working well beforehand, but does a great job (I use it more as a limiter) so saw no need to change.
-
Yeah very true - I sort of reasoned that if I feed the engineer anything even remotely unusual then they're likely to make (bad) adjustments to compensate. If they can't get a nice mix without me using a HPF then they probably can't if I do!
-
I chose to go after my compressor and DI. The way I see it, my comp is designed to see the full signal and I like how it responds, and I want to send a full signal to desk where it can be filtered by someone else if necessary. The HPF is for my monitoring only.

In action at the weekend

Yamaha YH-WL500 look pretty interesting. -
Ah right well that’s a bit annoying. I’ve never got the fascination with Thomann though, they always take ages to deliver IME and I’d gladly pay more for a UK source.
-
Really? For the sake of £20 and getting the stuff much more quickly?
-
Hi Dave the amp is a Blackstar U500 (500w 2x10 combo) and the matching 15” powered extension. Really happy with them, the limiter built into the combo is particularly good.

Yey I can join in again! I had my first gig with my originals band Genius the Fool last night. I’ve only rehearsed with the full band once, so luckily this was a small gig for a charity event and more like a live rehearsal really. It went really well. Pleased with the bass sound through my rig, we didn’t bother with DI from my board or amp as it was plenty big enough and we have all sorts of sequencers and samplers going into the PA so I don’t even think there was room on the desk! Allegedly this band play pretty big venues normally so it was nice to have an easy one first and we raised about £400 for charidee.

I've always thought as value as being held by the owner - i.e they value it at the price they offer it for. (Edit) I understand this is different to the market value, but in some ways it can dictate the perceived value in a given market. Look at 70s Fenders - they haven't changed, but the price has gone up because sellers are asking for more, people buy them and feel they have done well, perception of the 70s period changes somewhat because it's driven by new enthusiasts who have literally invested in it...
