1.
My 3 piece rnr pub band plays without instrument amps. I can't think of any good reason to use them these days. Multifx units are so good now that they're just not necessary for an average sized pub. Why lug amps AND a pa? It's unnecessary lugging and setting up, they add to feedback issues, they disperse unequally and volume wars are the consequence. I can see why boutique amps are wanted at bigger or more prestigious gigs with a sound engineer but not for a pub. Not using amps is a system most guitarists won't go for on principle but if they were open minded enough to try it it might solve the problem.
Very true, very true indeed.
2.
the rhythm player spent 20 odd years just playing with himself in his bedroom & seems incapable of adjusting to a band setting,
Funny how some, otherwise very talented, people just seem to really struggle to shift to a setting where they're playing with other people. Had something very similar at monday's session, a guitarist there (very competent player) was jamming along but really loud and trying to put in some really complex counter rhythms to a song that just didn't need it - I don't know what he was hearing but a few of us were wincing and really struggling to keep the rhythm going.
3. Hmmm, guitarists are ten-a-penny, bass-players (especially upright bass) are gold-dust. You've been reasonable, you've given them time, if they don't react to your ultimatum I'm willing to bet you'll be playing decent gigs again before they will...
4. I thought there was already a thread running about clip-on tuners but I couldn't find it so... The battery was running out in my clip-on tuner when I was in the pub last monday so I asked a mate if I could borrow his briefly. What a revelation. I've been using one of these: but to get it to register on the lower strings I've been needing to use the harmonic. The one I borrowed was one of these: A Snark SN2. It works perfectly. Good clear consistent signal with no need to move to harmonics. Even works well in a noisy environment. Important to know that there are two models - the SN1 is designed for guitars, the SN2 has an extended register and a built in microphone and is the one you want for a double bass. Can't recommend it enough.
5.
I'd really like a stand that you could leave the end pin out while its on the stand but none seem to allow this.
I have one of these: http://www.djmmusic.com/p-875-stentor-cello-stand.aspx?gclid=CNKb65O5kbsCFVMPtAodNhsA9g which works fine with the end pin out.
6. Hmmm, I'm right at the other end of the scale to you guys I think. DB being very much my second instrument, and being as most of my public playing is unplugged, my set up is very much bottom end. Cheap gear4music bass, piezo pick-up I stole out of my mandolin, into an Art tube pre-amp (bought as a mic power supply), into a Yamaha THR 10 (bought because my proper guitar valve amp is just too loud for home use). It's actually worked surprisingly well on the couple of occasions I've needed it but obviously it's only providing a little bit of extra gas and isn't any use for a major gig.
7. Is that an extended fingerboard in the first clip? Incredibly pure notes playing that high up.
8. I think this might be the appropriate thread! http://basschat.co.uk/topic/205617-new-easy-fit-wheeled-cradle-wheelbass/
9. I've got one of those but it really struggles with the lower two strings. Somewhat amazingly the tuner app that I downloaded for my phone actually works really well.
10.
Personally I like these http://www.amazon.co...d/dp/B002R0GBP4
I have one of these, works for home and gigs, also means I don't have to retract and extend the end pin all the time (which is good because it's a complete b**ch to do on mine).
11.
Thinking I might buy a cheap bridge from ebay and have a go at fitting it myself. I've got the old bridge to use as a template and with a bit of time and patience I feel I could get somewhere close. Would I be biting off more than I can chew?
The chap I bought my bass off was convinced that you needed to take the bridge off to fit it in the hard case so I fitted mine myself. Subsequently decided the action was too high so did a bit of file work to take it down a few mm and re-cut the string grooves. Nothing too tricky really and seems to work ok - that being said, it's never been played by a proper DB player so I might have screwed it up royally but just not know!
12. Hmm, having started this thread the music night that I was going to use the trailer for has moved to my side of town so I haven't really got any further with my plans. Should do though as I've bought most of the bits I need.
13. I think given the instrument I'm playing it wouldn't make a noticeable difference!
14. Cheers Steve, only just found your reply. I know a good luthier in Leeds so I might drop him a line and see what he can do. Thanks
15. There's always what you might call the cheating option. I've had some quite good results by taking a duplicate of the bass track, compressing the hell out of it, pitch-shifting it down an octave and then rolling off anything above the middle frequencies, then mixing a little bit of this low end back into the main bass track.
16. Same thing happens with solid wood guitars as well, they "play in" over time. I've never actually heard a scientific explanation for it though.
17. Hmmm, I've been wondering about this. I've got a cheap gear4music bass, bought second-hand and I've played around with the set up myself but only with regard to bridge height and position (previous owner thought that you had to remove the bridge every time you wanted to put it in the hard case!) and I've been wondering if it would be worth paying someone to properly set it up or whether i'd just be throwing good money after bad?
18. And whilst we're on questions, how long does it actually take to go from box to playing? I'm guessing more than the 5 seconds shown ;¬)
19. About 33 secs into this vid there's a cut sequence of one of The Wood Brothers building up his bass - anyone seen one like this before? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GV3QbjiS5qs
20. It's never occured to me to try and play sitting down! Must be a pretty high stool no?
