Oscar South replied to Oscar South's topic in Recording
Thank you for letting me know, I've re-uploaded all the tracks now (I found Young Moon had the same problem) so it they should all play correctly now. Cheers for the comments, glad you enjoyed it, yeah she's a brilliant singer and sax player, really great musician to work with all round. -
POLL! Who uses a hard case for gigs, and who uses a gig bag?
Oscar South replied to Evil Undead's topic in General Discussion
I use a hard case whenever possible.. but they just don't fit in most cars! -

Anybody going to see Geddy and friends next month??
Oscar South replied to Bobby K's topic in General Discussion
Was in the 02 last night....fantastic set!!! Was up with the gods on geddy's side but had a great view!! The sound....hmmm.....something was incredibly resonant.....kick drum? Taurus? Bass? I did see a few guys have a few words with the sound guy..but nothing much changed. Some songs sounded better than others! Was my first time seeing them and I'm a massive fan...was almost in tears when they first came on stage Highlight of the night for me? Marathon, Vital Signs and Subdivisions. Anyone else at the 02 last night? Dan
I saw them earlier in the week and found similar, something incredible boomy and resonant in the mix. Sounded great other than that little niggle though, amazing to see some of my heroes in the flesh I liked Working Man, the 1 second reference to Cygnus and Actually the newer stuff sounded pretty awesome. Always love the synth solos in Subdivisions too -
Traded an OLP Musicman For a Cort, flawless transaction and a pleasure to deal with. Oscar.

Who says music has to have a melody? Every element of sonic manipulations is equally valid as a compositional focus. You shouldn't listen to Lightning Bolt if what you like in music is a pretty melody and gentle timbre, but if you want to accept music as art, there's a lot to enjoy!
-
My hypothesis based on this thread: There are two types of people in this world; those who like art who's preconceptions they agree with, and those who enjoy good art. There's nothing wrong with either standpoint.
-
Haha, not because your opinion isn't valid.. just because Lightning Bolt threads quickly escalate into controversy
-
This is a band that you can get some enjoyment out of, but if you don't really get it, your best off just off just keeping quiet! Not checked out these videos though, so not commenting on the quality of them

I've reworded the post slightly. Fundamentally, I'm looking for some kind of gadget that can turn the signal that comes out of the back of my 65w head into something that literally any soundperson, trained, untrained, human, animal, plant, mineral, fossil.. (etc.) can easily deal with, and which also has a parallel line out to complete the connection between head and cone (or any other suggested solution to the problem). We've even got a tech spec with our full details (and it doesn't seem that demanding to mic a small bass combo or run a line post-amp), but I've been given trouble enough times for it to have become a pet-peeve.

Hey, lately I've been developing this project: http://www.reverbnation.com/thebearbeatsband. I play both upright and electric bass, but have been having some issues with sound at gigs. As we're an acoustic band we've done a lot of work fine tuning our full bands 'sonic spectrum', using timbre and dynamic heavily in our compositions; being an acoustic ensemble its been vitally important to fine tune the bass guitar to perfection, and we've just about nailed it The problem is, we've tailored the sound using the tone and controls of the Trace 65w boxer amp I've been playing with (got it off here actually.. PERFECT for this band!) and it doesn't have a line out, though its been modded so that the speaker can be bypassed allowing me to put a DI in the gap and continue through the parallel out to the cone. Realistically it should always be mic'd (sounds so much better, sits better in the mix and its the the only part of my instrument that's really actually acoustic!) This is less of a problem as we're playing better gigs, but I want an option to DI as sometimes at certain gigs with difficult or less experienced soundpeople its just easier to sacrifice a bit of tone and go direct. This shouldn't be a problem but the fact that its a post-amp DI is now making my life difficult at these gigs! I much prefer to run through the head or it throws the whole timbre and dynamic of the mix, but some sound people can't seem to deal with it. I know its not a real problem as I've done a BUNCH of gigs wired up this way with good soundmen and its sounded *beautiful* (in fact, I'll attach a live example!). Basically, can anyone tell me if there's something or other I can do to the Post-amp signal so I can give it to an inexperienced or difficult sound man and it be as close to just giving them a regular DI as possible, but with the tone of the 65w head? Its a compromise, but at least it'll be the best of a bad situation! Anyway cheers, enjoy the vid Oscar.

Jocelyn Brown bass cover!! Somebody els's guy
Oscar South replied to BassNovice's topic in General Discussion
Used to play this song on Double Bass as a duo with a soul singer, wish I had footage of it! Great tune -
I've always enjoyed this bassline and felt that often times it just gets criticized on internet forums because that's just what happens there. Its not quite a 'proper' walking bassline but its not quite anything else either, it does its job and I enjoy it, regardless if its the result of a failure to achieve something else is beside the point; its an enjoyable part in its own right. I like the idea of the outspoken speaking with actions rather than words purely because it'd be a very interesting post to read and there are some people on here who could do a good job of it, but unfortunately I severely doubt anyone actually would. Good idea though!

Playing our original composition 'Fairweather Friend' at a recent show supporting Jackie Oates:

Well if you're into timbral experimentation, sonic spectrum manipulation and advanced compositional techniques then I've got those bases covered myself . Not going to lie though, I'm looking forward to watching a bit of a crazy live slap fest and will be cool to see what other tricks get pulled out too.

Just immerse yourself in the genre and play whatever you want. Don't 'keep it simple', just play tastefully as you would in any context and use your own judgement. Folk is just another kind of music and like any genre its very much alive; tradition is all around us and to dwell entirely on music of the past would be a mistake when there's such a flourishing contemporary folk scene right now. The obvious bands to check out are the old Folk Rock bands like Fairport Convention and The Oysterband (also give Dave Pegg's bass playing on Bryter Layer by Nick Drake a listen), but there are an untold amount of new and cutting edge bands drawing from a rich tradition with elements of themselves and other genres they're inspired by moving the genre forward, check out any or all of these bands (these are just my personal picks that I've run into or been introduced to, there will be MANY more worth listening to): Urban Folk Quartet - http://www.theurbanfolkquartet.com/ The Destroyers - http://www.thedestroyers.co.uk/ Little Sister - http://www.littlesistermusic.co.uk/ NewRising - http://www.myspace.com/newrisinguk and check out my own Folk band, The Bear Beats Band (who I'm opening up for Jackie Oates with in North Wales this very night ): http://www.bearbeatsband.com/ http://www.reverbnation.com/thebearbeatsband We've just finished recording our debut 6 track EP. which is just being mastered, 3 of the tracks are up on our social networking resources. I play fretted electric bass entirely on this EP. over double bass or fretless.. electric bass has been a mainstay of folk music culture for over 40 years now, so don't hold back for the sake of 'tradition' Edit: Oh yeah, and find out where your local pub sessions are, go to em and listen, chat, join in if you want. As has been said Folk music is all about knowledge and music being passed down through the aural tradition, what better way to get it into your soul than to involve yourself with the real thing.
