  1. OK, cheapest on BC. £160 posted within UK. You won't find valvier goodness for less spondulix
  2. I didn't go to see Genesis on their last tour precisely because of the decline in Phil Collin's voice - and that's despite the huge nostalgia draw for me (my fave band in mid/late 70s and my first ever gig, Earls Court 1977). But I am just one opinion and clearly from the BC thread during the tour, loads of fellow BassChatters loved it. Its not for me to tell them they are wrong! In short, I don't think aging musos should hang up their boots unless they want to, even if their musical abilities noticeably decline. Besides, they can still use studio trickery to sound good (take a listen to new Judas Priest single Panic Attack and you wouldn't think Rob Halford has lost any of his startling voice and range)
  3. Try me with an offer. I don't need two preamp/DI pedals and the Bassrig has more functionality, even if this sounds (unsurprisingly) more authentically valvey
  4. Hey Chris, no these are polished nickel flats with purple silks. The blurb says "FLATS authentic in every way. Constructed over a round core for increased flexibility and lower tension, the RB FLATS are wound with a pure nickel flat wire, which is then polished to a high shine, resulting in a string that is both supple and comfortable to play. With the RB FLATS, Optima have created a flat wound bass string which echo’s the classic tones of yesteryear."
  5. Being the bassist in a band requires so much more than ability on the instrument - enthusiasm, learning parts for rehearsals, practice before gigs, maintaining communication with band mates, turning up on time reliably etc. I am a very basic, untechnical bass player but pretty good at the other stuff.
  6. Having read up how accurate these German made strings are to the flatwounds that were standard issue on 4000/4001 models in the 1960/70s, I bought a couple of sets. Unfortunately the tension is a bit too high for my knackered left hand (its definitely more tense than TI flats, which I previously used, and feels more like a 'standard' flatwound such as a Chrome or La Bella 45-105). The gauges are 45-57-77-100. One set is brand new and unopened in the packet, the other has been on my bass for two days and the ends were trimmed for use on my Ric (note: on removing, some of the silk immediately fell off the tuner end of the G string, grrr, though its 100% usable). A Strings is the cheapest UK-based retailer and sells at £47.99 per set. So how about £40 30 posted for the brand new set and £30 posted for the briefly used set?
  7. In general I have had good experiences with BD and I will continue to use them. I did have one major beef which was them mis-weighing a bass. I have a glass back and weight is important to me (even more so now, after busting 13 ribs plus shoulder/sternum/left hand in a horse accident in March). The bass I bought (a Ric) was heavier than advertised and I ended up having to sell on eBay for my usual loss. They do now weigh basses individually and I am prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt.
  8. Pretty much nothing seems to be selling on the forum right now ... so I am withdrawing this for the moment and will keep it in reserve as backup to my Rick and Serek.
  9. Not cheap either, £45 on Amazon!
  10. FYI, the Rick standard strings are nickel rounds and have an unusual set of gauges with 45,55,75,105
  11. I wondered the same. A quick google turned this up
  12. ^^^^ my latest band (goth/post punk) has been a breath of fresh air after playing blues rock/Americana (mainly), hiphop/funk and cowpunk in last five years
  13. Reviving this thread with my recently acquired 1973 4000-to-4001 conversion. Loads of mods (tuners, bridge, bezel, controls and extra pickup) but loving it - even the crudely carved "Crue" in the body! Nice slim neck and ultra low tension TI strings to suit my knackered left hand.
  14. Bump. New price: £950 plus delivery at cost if I swap for nickel rounds, £975 plus delivery at cost if it stays with the TI flats. Sorry, no offers and no trades
  15. OP last visited on July 19, so I think you would be lucky Karl
  16. In response to a PM, sorry no trades as I have a Bassrig (pictured) and all the pedals I need. Sale only
  17. Returning to Judas Priest (see 'Breaking the lav'): Beyond the Realms of Neath Right Crawler Turbot Lover Electric Rye The Zipper Metal Rods
  18. BOC - Don't fear the keaper Bon Jovi - Livin' on a Player AC/DC - Chunderstruck Judas Priest - Breaking the lav
