1. I have a Zeller 3/4 DB that I want to teach myself to slap when I have the time (got the Weedwacker strings on it). My band fancies slap-style bass on a couple of our more psychobilly-influenced tracks and - given the impracticality of bringing a DB and my Rick 4001 to gigs - I wondered if the Stagg EDB-3/4 would manage it? I know it won't sound authentically DB but is it possible to slap and will it come close sound-wise?

    Thx Clarky

  2.
Nice one Rev. I have been eyeing up Thomann for the past year or so as I thought that they where the cheapest supplier of.....well....almost anything, but it turn out That old Bob gollihur from across the pond will supply a removable neck four string with the two separate soft cases with a free hard case if I but it this month , and the shipping over to London all for £1600 - cheaper than Thomann by £130 od - which I like very much. All I need to do now is save up the money proper quick - which is near impossible, but there you go! Anyway, cheers for the help mate, and all who replied to my question.

    Cheers, Dave
If buying from the US you will be stung for customs & excise duty (>10% of declared value, can't remember how much) so you need to add that to the equation

  3.
Any recommendations? I found this thread:
    Thread on comfy straps
Basically, it looked like a tie-ish between the Neotech and the Comfort Strapp. However, it seems the Neotech has been discontinued. So, those of you who have the Comfort Strapp, is it really the best thing since sliced bread? The incision from my op goes 3" front to back, right where the strap is going to be, and will be a bit tender for some time, so I really need this!

Thanks in advance for your opinions!
I recommend the Comfort Strapp (I have a dodgy back/left shoulder) but make sure you get the extra long one as I mistakenly bought the medium one first off and my bass was up at Mark King level - fine if you are a slapper but not if you want to look punk/rock cool!

  4. Couple of years back I owned a Corvette and a Thumb N/T, both 4s - no contest, the Thumb felt great/smooth/fast/comfortable whereas the 'vette (which I wanted as back-up) felt thin and not very well finished by comparison. Sold the latter v quickly although I eventually parted ways with the Thumb also (as I prefer the look of 'classic' basses).

Doesn't prove much but I guess my point is that all Warwicks are not the same [edited for the sake of clarity for Josh] ... it depends on the model, probably also year etc

  5. The actual Fender Steve Harris P of a few years ago was made in Japan. I had a MIJ Fender P (2-tone sunburst, m/n) imported by Chandlers and added a Badass II and Rotosound Steve Harris flatwound strings - whole shooting match cost somewhere circa £550, can't remember exactly right now (due to copious Sunday evening red wine).

Was a lovely bass but the strings were like ropes and horrible. Took them off and put sensible roundwounds on them. Eventually sold it to noirbass on this Forum. Anyway point is you can have same spec, less West Ham logo (!) brand new for a LOT less.

  6.
It's so dinky! :) For some reason I expected it to be bigger
Its absolutely tiny, like a toy - which is why me with my rubbish intonation (gave up on fretless years ago) cannot play it. Sounds damn good and very like a DB ... but definitely one for the more "precise" player!

  7.
Where's the other strap button?
There is only one - I think the idea is you use a strap with string ends and tie them around the headstock. A quick Google of Ashbory and strap button suggests that a standard mod is to move the strap button to near the output jack (see link below)

  8.
If you want to post photos, upload them to an image hosting website such as photobucket.com, and then click on the IMG code (it copies automatically) then paste it in your post when you're replying to a topic. I think it automatically resizes them too. I'm not totally sure but I've never had a problem with pictures being to large.

Good luck with the sale too, I was thinking about getting one of these but they're pretty hard to come by, and Sod's Law seems to dictate that whenever something I want comes up at a great price I'll be totally broke. If you want to hold it for me and let me pay in monthly installments of £25 let me know
Thanks for that - I'm not very PC minded and have been using ULead digital imaging software for photos .. which was very simple when it worked :)

  9.
Clarky did contact me before posting this: I reckon it's a very good price - although photos will help (email me some and I'll see if I can add them) - based on recent sales of Ashborys. I checked ebay before posting mine and found one that went for £220+ (+ P&P also).
I'm not sure re. the relative values of older newer models and why some are Fender and others DeArmond (as both seem to be Korean made) .. but I'm sure somebody will know / explain.
Thanks for that - I will try to send you photos tonight, very kind of you. I do have someone who wants to come around and try it out at the weekend but I don't consider that a sale.

    Thx Clarky

  10. They've been going for a zillion years - their album "Behind the mask" (I think) was required listening in the jazz funk world in the early/mid 1980s along with their side project band The Warriors

  11. Hi all, seeing eubassix' Ashbory being sold today reminded me I have an Ashbory sat in my "GAS cellar". Bought somewhere between 5-8 years ago (really can't remember when) its been sat in its gig bag unused for the last 4-5 years. Was only ever used at home in any case.

Its in Moon Blue, in very good condition and works perfectly. Has the original E, A, and D strings and a replacement G string. Plus of course its cute little padded gig bag. Unlike the Ashbory sold today I don't have some spare strings to throw in, hence mine is priced lower (a new set costs £20).

So if you missed eubassix' Ashbory and fancy having a go with this unusual beasty just PM me.

PS. Here is a link showing the current Moon blue version which has different machine heads to the earlier versionhttp://www.musiciansfriend.com/document?cp...832&index=3
and here is my bass (at last!)

  12.
Hi all, as have managed to source an Epifani UL115 from another Forumite am looking to move on my Aguilar GS112NT (300W, 8 ohm, weight 39 lb).

New they are about £300 from the Bass Merchant (where I bought mine in July 2007) and the Bass Gallery. Mine is in tip top, ungigged nick (have attached link to Aguilar website as my photos keep bouncing back as "larger than the available space"). Don't have a cover. As you probably all know, these have great sound quality - I just needed something more powerful.

    http://www.aguilaramp.com/products_cabinets_gs112nt.htm

Already have an offer from outside Forum of £200 plus p&p - would rather sell to a Forumite so anyone interested in matching that just PM me. Prefer bank transfer or cleared cheque as Paypal fees very high.

If pick-up preferred, I am nr Hammersmith in central London.

    Sold pending payment

  13.
Have a look on Talkbass.com or Rockabillybass.com for their weedwhacker strings thread - I think the weak A and E strings are a common problem.

Maybe a mixed set of weedwhacker and nylon cores will sound better?
Thanks - had a good read of Rockabillybass.com threads. Seems the problem is common but improves as the strings stretch and settle in, especially the A string.

  14.
I had a similair situation with my double bass - it had these stretchy weedwacker strings on it looking all multicoloured. Acoustically they were pretty weak, the E string was almost inaudible. I think there are people who make decent ones like "Barefoot larry's hillbilly slap strings" and other types.

They tend to be pretty cheap so worth messing around with another set maybe? Personally I figured I would just get used to the metal ones.

    J
Thanks for yuor thoughts Legion - the thing that is puzzling me is that loads of rockabilly-ites seem to swear by these strings (a least according to some US sites I went on) so they must have something! Maybe if I let them stretch and settle down and play around with the bridge height a bit more ...???

  15. Hi all - recently played on the same bill as a rockabilly band (very good - The Jumpstarters) and fancied having a crack at slap bass. Have had an Andreas Zeller 3/4 DB sat around for 10 years gathering dust (after an ill-fated foray into learning jazz) so ordered some Weedwacker rockabilly strings from eBay and put them on last night.

Apart from tuning issues (the strings just keep stretching and going horribly flat), which I guess will settle down, I had difficulty getting a decent sound out of the E and A strings (D and especially G string actually sound very good). Both the lower strongs have no resonance or volume and give little more than a dull, very quiet thud. The action on my DB is quite high so that is not the reason as far as I can tell.

Are they always like this or is there something I can do to get more sound out of them? Can you only get a decent sound if amplified?

    Cheers Clarky
