1. Incredible Watts per pound, heard good things about these so thought Forumite might be interested (I am well sorted with Aguilar 112 and Markbass 106)

  2. Hi all - recently sold a couple of things on the Forum. All feedback (constructive of course!) on transactions welcome. Might persuade others I am not a crook/scumbag/etc and am a reasonable human being to deal with! Ta Clarky

  3. First impressions very very positive - with gain high up get really gritty overdriven sound, think intro to Ace of Spades or Love Song (The Damned), which is where I want to be in my punk band, Kismetik. Roll off the gain and its a warm tubey round sound (I am not technical) which would suit traditional rock, soul and blues IMHO. Playing with the EQ controls also gives a deep, deep dub reggae sound. Thus it seems a very versatile amp and I can no longer see a need for my Tech 21 LM 300 head which weighs four times as much in its rack sleeve. Probably not right if you want a 'modern' hifi, slap bass sound but can't think of any other genre it would not work with.

Niceguyhomer was right - wow what a head!

Looking forward to really giving it some serious time in next week or so, ahead of a couple of gigs (if interested anyone main one is a punk/ska 'Battle of the Bands' on 6th May at Hope & Anchor, Islington)

    Cheers, a pleased Clarky

PS, tested with my P bass (which has Seymour Duncan high-gain p/u's)

  4. With box and instructions. £100 plus P&P (probably £3-4). vgc

Was using Sansamp to improve sound of cr@ppy bass amps/combos in practice studios - just had change of rig and bought Markbass R500 (see review elsewhere on Forum) which is so light I will bring it with me to practices (as well as gigs!), hence no more need for Sansamp

  5.
My budget would be something to £600. Something similair to Cannibal corpse, ATHEIST. Which has a solid, heavy sound.
Also, what should you people recommend, i was a pick player (and i thought, that playing bass with a pick is lame lol) and now i'm going for fingers, but most of my bands material doesn't sound good now. How can i get the pick bass sound?
given yr budget, someone on the Forum is selling a Warwick Thumb at that level - excellent metal bass.

re pick sound, maybe you need to turn up the High EQ on yr amp to pick up the 'click' of your fingers and make it sound more percussive ... or change your style :) Steve Harris has a very clicky finger sound, for example

  6. Alan used to do London gigs with a lovely old dude who I used to know and gave me lessons on the double bass (sadly with little success!), Phil Bates. Phil used to play with Tubby Hayes and Stefan Grapelli but sadly passed away last year.

  7.
when i was in Balance of Silence i used my warwick FNA jazzman, a stingray and a status 6 string, all worked really well.
When I was in death/thrash band NYX I used a Warwick Thumb 5. From surveying the bass magazines the most popular metal basses among the newer crop of hardcore bands are Warwicks and Ibanez's.

  8. Sorry if this sounds a bit opportunistic but I am selling a VERY metal bass on the Forum (link below). Spiky high gloss black ESP TA200, the cheap version of the bass played by Slayer's Tom Araya - with added red side dot LEDs!

  9.
I'm sure you'll love it Clarky but if you don't, let me know and I'll give you £500 for it ;)

    Just kidding mate :)
Well that would be par for the course for me! Don't tell that to my wife though

  10.
I'd say it would be better for rock than a LMII or a W/A Scout. It does have that tube warmth without sounding overdriven and I would have thought it would be right up your alley but you better try one Clarky. One man's meat and all that. :)
Hi there, well I've gone and ordered an R500 from Mark at Bass Direct. Won't hold you responsible if I don't get on with it  But seriously everything about it appeals to me, the weight/portability, the look, the simple tone controls, the tube preamp, the specific "rock" purpose, so I can't believe I won't love it!

Will probably spell the end for my great-sounding but a-bit-too-heavy Tech 21 head if its as good as I think it is going to be and also my Sansamp BDDI - so a warning these may appear in the FS section before long!

Not technically minded but will post my thoughts on it once I've had a good play.

  11.
Can't link to the 'bay (at work!) Any chance of pics / price here?
Not got memory card with photos on right now. All I can do at the moment is give you a copy of the text and tell you that the starting price of the auction is £699 (edited for new eBay auction).

"Beautifully restored 1976 Ricky 3000, the short-scale model played by Mani (STone Roses, Primal Scream).

Bought last year as a worn Mapleglo with butchered black scratchplate. Restoration included custom painting in Fireglo by Sims Custom Shop, addition of NOS Rick 3000 white pickguard from US, painting of truss rod cover by Sims to match pickguard, set-up by Bass Gallery in Camden. It is immaculate and the beautiful high gloss body has no scratches or dings or any kind.

Cost me a fair amount (>£350) to restore this which - together with rarity value ("as rare as rocking horse sh*t" according to Mani!) - means starting price is not low. But if you want a rare Rick 3000 in ultra-fabulous nick (ungigged snce restoration) you will not find a nicer example. My 100% feedback also tells you I am a trustworthy seller. Reason for selling is that I have decided I prefer playing my long-scale 1980 Rick 4001 bass and I cannot justify this sitting on the wall as a beautiful museum piece.

I am based near Hammersmith, London if pick-up wanted. Note no bidders from outside UK, no <10 feedback bidders and I will not meet in a dark alley somewhere to deliver for cash! Payment via Paypal or cleared cheque.

Will deliver well-packed in bubble wrap but do not have a hard case for this."

  12. I am thinking of expanding my amp rig with a lightweight head. I like a rock tone that is overdriven (not fuzzy but gritty) and play in a punk band. I understand the Little Mark II, though a great amp, is very clear and clean, and I think I need something with a tube preamp.

ence was thinking about the R500 and also a Mesa Walkabout Scout combo (so giving option to remove head to use with my 6x10).

Do you think the R500 is up to that sort of Damned/Motorhead/Metallica type overdriven sound? Or indeed the Mesa (suspect the answer is definitely yes to the latter given two tubes in preamp)?

Would appreciate your insights. Thx Clarky

  13. Hi all, its a bit special interest so didn't post it on this site but - if anyone's after creating that Stone Roses look - I am flogging my restored FG Rick 3000 on eBay (old link below; see latest post for new link).

  14. Hi I bought this from German music company Thomann in 2006 whilst in my previous band (a death/thrash metal band called Nyx) for thrash metal credibility, as its the (cheap version) of what Slayer's Tom Araya plays. I then (to my enormormous regret, given cost) had red Sims LEDs fitted to the side of the fretboard (cost >£200). Any thrash metallers out there interested in this for £250 [s]£300 [/s][s]£350 ovno[/s]? Will cost £430 in UK but obviously without LEDs. Condition: ungigged (as I continued to use a Warwick Thumb 5 live, since sold) but, like most high gloss black basses, lots of fine surface scratches that could probably be removed with T-cut.

Does not have a case but I will throw in a battle-scarred but solid Warwick casket case (yep, the coffin-shaped one with quilted interior for full-on demonicisim if such a word exists!)

So you get a gig-friendly death/thrash metal machine with case for just £250 + postage

  15. Hi, I imported a Cafe Walter HA1 headphone practice amp from the US last year (they are handmade in the US and only available from Bass NorthWest). Cost me about £150 including taxes. Its now sat in my bedroom doing nothing as I recently bought a Tascam MP3 bass trainer (great for learning tracks).

The Cafe Walter is basic as hell (just two volume controls, one for an external input eg iPod, and an LED!), built like a tank and allegedly the best headphone practice amp available in terms of fidelity of bass sound, according to lots of reviews. Runs off two batteries (also has US power adaptor).

Anyone interested at half what I paid (£75) plus postage?
