Kismetik will be playing Tommy Flynn's (55 Camden High St, nr Mornington Crescent Tube) on Weds 18th June. We will be onstage at 8.15/8.30 ish, so its not a late one. All welcome. Enjoy a pint of Guinness and some vintage punk!
Cheers Clarky -
These 6x10s that we both have are fantastic standalone cabs and for someone agonising over a single cab solution that doesn't want to go the whole hog and get an Ampeg monolith, they really are are a great idea! If I weren't downsizing bands (full on 4 piece rock band to acoustic duo) then I'd have a 6x10 any day of the week.
Hope you have more luck than I have Clarky... I have to confess that even though I've got a pair of replacement cabs I'm still gigging my 6x10 this weekend
I'm amazed that noone's gone for your TechSoundsystems 6x10 - but thats what also makes me think I too will have no joy - could be a blessing in disguise as my band might have a few gigs coming up in July, some of which might require the full 6x10 monty! -
Hi all
Like the title says, I'm thinking out loud...
I've had a Schroeder 21012L for a couple of years, and done many, many gigs with it many different situations. It's been fab every time. Now, for the first time, I'm considering a change for two reasons.
1 ) GAS
2 ) My new head
With regards to 1 ) - yeah... I'm an idiot but I'm human and a like a change every now and then.
As for 2 ) - I recently bought a MESA MPulse 600 head which is fab'n'groovy and nice and round and tubey, just how I like it. However, it has big booty... as does the Schroeder. Put them both together, along with flatwound-strung Precisions, and it's MASSIVE, and possibly a little overpowering. It's not so much a problem with my fretted which is ace, but my Fretless P isn't as defined and growly as I'd like. It's there if I DI from the head to the FOH, but it's kinda lost via the cab.
I've been thinking of getting the board of my fretless epoxied to tighten it up, but.. I dunno. I also switched to rounds and half-rounds, but that gives me more of a 'boiiing' than a growl. Don't like 'em.
Anyway, to cut a long, rambling, story short... I quite fancy experimenting with a new cab. Probably a 2x12.
The general criteria is...
- Not too big (preferably with a depth of less than 44cm as that means it'll fit in the cupboard under the stairs during quieter times)
- Not too heavy (my Schro is 26kgs, so 30kg tops, say...)
- 600w @ 4ohm minimum
- Able to to the job as a standalone cab at a noisy pub gig, with a big'n'focused bottom end
Candidates (not all 2x12s!) include...
Schroeder 410
Schroeder 1210
Schroeder 1212
Dr. Bass 2460
Genz NeoX 212
Aggie 212
Epi UL212
TecAmp 212
EBS 212 NEO
Zoot 212
...and probably a million others.
I REALLY like the look fo the Genz and the DR. Bass, but are these good standalone cabs? I love Schroeder, and I'd be keen to see if the 410L has a slightly tighter bottom-end, too. Not much chance to try one, though.
I'd be interested to hear your opinions, even if it's 'Stick with the Schroeder you fool. It's just a GAS attack!'.
Thanks for not falling asleep yet.
there is an Epi UL212 FS on the Forum at a reasonable price - been sitting there a month or two so you will have to search back - its in London though -
Given current environment, I suspect it will be around in a few weeks!

Have discovered that a smaller cab is fine for most of my band's gigs, which normally have PA, and thus Markbass 106 is a bit of an unused luxury.
Just wondered if anyone interested in this pretty lightweight (77lb) high-quality 10x6" 6-ohm cab. Has literally left my house only once, for a gig at the Hope & Anchor, Islington and is too big and powerful to schlep along for band rehearsals. It looks totally as new. Cost me, from memory, c£900 from Bass Centre in London in February (they now charge £1,035, prices went up during 2008 due to strong Euro). Would have to be pick up from Central London (I live nr Hammersmith) due to size. -
I believe all the Sansamp bass DI pedals have the same sonic capabilities, be they the BDDI, the programmable or the rackmount (or the Landmark head which I own, which effectively combines a two channel rackmount bass DI with a 300W power amp)
...at least that what it says on Tech 21's website - if you go onto this site there are sound clips -
I'm looking at the rather nice used basses that chingo123 has for sale on ebay.
http://search.ebay.co.uk/_W0QQsassZchingo123
He's in Japan.
Really good feedback, frequent flyers (some then selling the stuff in their own countries) etc.
It all looks great..
So, has anyone on here bought from him?
OG
Nope but bought from other frequent Japan eBayer, Lenoirvinyles (or similar) - reason for replying is to warn that you have to pay c20% tax on import from Japan as well as postage so it does bump up the cost - that said I got my nice 1990s Ramones-alike P bass that way for an all-in cost of just over £300 (helped by seller declaring a "conservative" value for the bass to customs ) -
Up for sale again on eBay, here's the link if interested http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...E:IT&ih=003
Heading off now (Monday afternoon) and not back in UK until Wednesday evening if anyone has any questions -
Word of warning - if its an eBay bass that ships from Japan, not only will shipping add a chunk to the price but you get taxed too so not as much of a bargain as you'd think (same is true for some nice-looking Japanese Fenders listed on eBay that ship from Switzerland which is outside the EU)
I've found one for £255, looks the nuts.
How do they compare to the USA bass?
According to most reviews I read before purchasing, the Japanese basses - especially the CIJ not-for-export models - are at least as good quality as their US counterparts (some say even better). The P bass I had from Guitar Emporium was beautifully put together and nice to play - only sold as I had too many basses including two Japanese P basses (the other one is a slightly beat-up white 1990s bass, shown on my signature)! -
As per Machines reply, I bought a Fender CIJ P bass off Guitar Emporium (sold on to noirbass on the Forum). I recommend them. Know what they are doing and usually have several in stock as well as ability to import the precise model you want.
Ive been into Slayer for years and years, And they are THE only metal band I listen to now-a-days. When I first picked up a bass I wanted to play Slayer stuff and Doors stuff, only to find out Slayer stuff was far too fast for me and The doors didnt have a bassist on 90% of their songs.
Anyways...
Back when I used to play with a pick I couldnt play anything by slayer because of the speed and I was only doing down strokes. Havent tried to play any slayer stuff since.
To save looking thru 100's of tabs, Which Slayer songs are worth learning?? I know the magority of them have a lot of open notes, im looking for some which are more tech.
Id prefer stuff from these albums,
God hates Us all,
Reign in Blood,
Seasons in the Abyss,
South Of Heaven,
Thanks in advance
When in my former thrash band I used to practice Angel of Death, Necrophobic (stupid fast but very simple) and Ghosts of War - you can get the tabs for each off the web
You could even learn them on a Tom Araya bass which I happen to be selling on this Forum (worth a try!):
to tell you the truth , the whole thong about rockabilly slap bass is the slap sound which is the note and the slap ,plus the actual vision of the 3/4 double bass , you can get a good cheap rockabilly set up german bass on ebay for a very good price !!
if ya ask me , it's well worth the hassle of humping ya slapbass around the moment ya get onstage and wrap ya legs around the big fat girl.................. rockabilly heaven
and a good tip is , go for the k&k rockabilly pick up kit
hope this helps

Thx Kev Bucket - agreed it looks tons better (and I have the DB already), its just the logistics that worry me - for example, for band practices I have to schlep on London Underground to NW London but live in SW London - impossible with a doghouse -
Yep, slap it straight in a skip!
Joking!
I've been waiting for some joker to come back with "no, but I can spank a monkey" -
Thanks everyone for advice - consensus seems to be that it would be possible with the addition (probably) of an extra p/u on the fingerboard to pick up the clicks/slaps and possibly changing strings to nylons
Great place BassChat! -
I could slap my old Bassix EUB, but it had hollow chambers with piezos inside.
An entirely solid body EUB, though? Hmmm... I don't think so.
Thanks! Just saved me £250 of GAS! -
Can you slap a stag, sure but watch out for the antlers......sorry !.
PS, while on subject of Hawkwind, Lemmy's long-time replacement Alan Davey is a cracking and underrated bass player too
Im sat here listening to Sabbath on my mp4 player (better than watching britains got talent) and wondering who everyone thinks is the best rock/metal bassist.
I"m expecting a lot of diversity and probably names i"ve never even heard off but it should be interesting (no arguments guys this is a bit of fun).
My personal fave has to be "Geezer Butler"
Lemmy - not just for Motorhead but for the brilliant propulsive playing in Hawkwind (Space Ritual is a genuine must-have album) -
Sorry - just proves I am not reading BassChat day and night - well actually, I am but can't always read straight
Should re-name it BassCrack
