1. I have a set of Velvet Animas that I bought second-hand on BC but only a few weeks old. The G tuning suddenly started to drop a hell of a lot yesterday (about a tone and a half yesterday and about three whole tones today) but the tuning peg has not moved, nor has the bridge (the E/A/D are all fine) and the string's been on my bass for about 2-3 weeks now without anything like this happening. The copper windings also seem to have developed some rough/sharp patches. I don't slap and am a hobbyist who plays pizz at most 30 minutes a day so these are 'babied' strings. Checked on TalkBass and it seems I am not the only to have experienced this happening randomly. Seriously very annoying and also pricey as a replacement G is about £65-70 from Germany. Making me re-think whether I should just stick with trustworthy, long-lasting steels (eg, Spiros), grrrrr
2. Excellent, so much tidier than all the repairs mine has. Can only conclude that mine was pieced together after being run over by a herd of elephants, a Chieftain tank and a sperm whale on rollerskates
3. good work Wayne, he was a lovely man by all accounts as well as a fountain of knowledge
4. My faves would be Scott LaFaro and Danny Thompson. But this song ('Topplue Votter & Skjerf' by Terje Rypdal, Miroslav Vitous and Jack De Johnette) is IMHO one of the most beautiful ever written and includes my favourite ever DB solo, so for that reason alone I nominate Miroslav Vitous http://www.xiami.com/song/play?ids=/song/playlist/id/1769303657/object_name/default/object_id/0
5. Hi all, there's a bass I am quite interested in that is listed on eBay Australia. I appreciate that I will have to pay c20% UK import duty but given the weak Australian $ it still works out do-able price-wise ... as long as shipping isn't exorbitant. The seller hasn't shipped abroad before and so hasn't yet come up with a quote for me. So I wondered if anyone here had imported a bass from Australia and how much it cost purely for the shipping? Many thanks
6. I also had a Micro. Very neutral and lacking in warmth for an electric bass but in my view excellent for double bass as its so uncoloured and plenty powerful. The Doubler adds in some useful DB-specific features to the Micro, that is notch filter and phase switch. Given it was part-designed by Mike Arnopol, the acoustic sound genius behind BigE speakers, I think the Doubler is an excellent choice for those gigging double bass primarily. If you doubled a lot, you would certainly want to put some kind of preamp (eg Sansamp) in front of the Doubler to warm up the sound for electric playing IMHO
7.

fat fingers and iPad = red face
8. By the way, Mrs C has occasional bouts of arthritis and has kept it at bay (she believes, and who am I to argue) by taking something called Honeygar, a mixture of honey and cider vinegar that Sir Ranulph Fiennes swears by http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-1053045/Sir-Ranulph-Fiennes-I-beat-arthritis-vinegar-cure-passed-mother.html, and a rosehip syrup/Vitamin C extract called Litozin LInks here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Comvita-Manuka-Vinegar-formerly-Honeygar/dp/B002DFWFBC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1385312882&sr=8-1&keywords=honeygar and here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Litozin-Health-Capsules-Natural-Vitamin/dp/B0013G3EOE/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1385312958&sr=8-3&keywords=litozin+joint+health She was supposed to have been in line for possible knee replacement 7 years ago but is more active and mobile today than she was back then. She attributes this to the aforementioned and exercise
9. First question, Pete. Seen a doc? If its some form of arthritis then you need to be doing more than taking glucosamine. Possibly anti-inflammatories (eg Voltarol, Nurofen) and maybe something stronger depending on how serious the issue is. Go see a doc, mate
10. Sunday morning bump
11. Particular gripe of mine - the use of the work "then" when "than" is the correct word. Very common amongst the yoots and often seen on BassChat eg, "my amp goes louder then that" Pedant rant over
12. Thanks Tom, PM coming
13. Just to be clear, this is a fund raiser so no trades please. Also I now have a big enough (bicycle) box to post Post in UK would be £30, outside UK (Europe) would be £70 For UK buyer (with delivery in a Protection Racket semi-rigid gig-bag inside a bike box) the total cost by bank transfer will be £2130. For pickup in London £2,100. For non-UK buyer, bank transfer in sterling for £2170 please with any additional bank charges paid for by the buyer
14. Sorry Chris. My Baby Bass has a really thin neck and will only take light/weich strings.
15. Yes mods, I'm sorry and all that. Need to raise some dosh so this beauty is back up FS
16. here's a pic of my strings to show the condition
17. Would also trade against a good condition set of Spirocore Weichs (so i can use these as a backup for my Baby Bass - before you ask, the tail-piece yellow 'string loops' of Velvet Blues don't work on a Baby Bass bridge)
18. Hi Gareth, nope! 3/4 again sorry mate!!!!
19. I have posted this a few times in miscellaneous DB threads but it may be worth pinning this on the DB forum. This is a Belgian pro double bass player's matrix (over two pages) of sound-clips of various DB strings, played in different ways (arco, groove, long tones etc) but each pretty uniform and recorded with the same set-up so that valid string-to-string comparisons can be made. May help some people in choosing the right DB strings (and save lots of money potentially from buying the wrong ones!) The matrix is here: http://www.hervejeanne.de/saitenmatrix.php
20. I got these strings a month or two ago from BC'er Rabbie and really like them (got loads of compliments at the Bluegrass 'Sorefingers' weekend on the tone). However, I wanted something a little more dark and gut-like so I am now using Velvet Animas, the (twice as expensive, ouch) thicker cousins of Blues. The strings are in good condition and I have cleaned them up with toothpaste and wet rag to restore much of their copper-y brightness (makes no odds to sound, they just look more shiny!) Here's Rabbie's ad http://basschat.co.u...-for-sale-sold/ I paid £65, so how about £55 posted for a very good condition set of strings that would normally set you back about £130 http://www.thomann.d...ass_strings.htm Here's a clip of Velvet Blues (not me) And a sound matrix so you can compare their sound (and hear that Animas and Garbos are darker and guttier) http://www.hervejean...aitenmatrix.php
21. congrats, beautiful bass and the NAMM pic also shows the lovely Willy Weekes green P bass that I owned as did Paulie (still in his avatar in this thread)
22. Bump for a very nice and IMHO under-priced piece of custom P bass loveliness
23. Bought a very nice 51P bass off Andy. Excellent deal, friendly helpful communications throughout and the bass was wrapped to withstand a nuclear assault (and even mail couriers!) Recommended
