1. I use a 2012 MacBook for my solo stuff. It provides all the effect processing and I record my sets too, with no issues. I use Logic Pro for this. Re the overheating, where do you have it set up ? I have mine on a stand, so there's air circulating around it. Chances are, if you see someone on stage with a laptop, it'll be a MacBook.
2. One of the important thing with either a 5 or a 6 is effective muting. I advocate whatever technique works for you, as long as you're muting unused strings and avoiding extraneous noise and notes. I will rest my thumb on the B when playing notes on the E and A strings, moving down the strings as I play notes on the higher strings.
3.
I remember the arches. Weren't there two or three music shops there? And Sound Control was just around the corner.
I remember a shop called City music, which I think is still there, or was last time I walked past that way.
4.
With my aging memory failing me, which establishment was in the railway arches?
The bass centre. The signage was still there only about 10 years ago. Apparently the bass place was by the Alex theatre. It was then taken over by the bass centre, and at some time moved to the arches by Sound control.
5. I think it became the bass centre. It's before my time, but I did used to know one of the guys who owned this, he was a friend of a friend,
6. I'm often baffled by the fact that they pay a 17 year old to collect the dirty glasses, but expect a highly trained and competent musician to work for nothing. Note the use of the word work, because that's exactly what you're doing, working.
7. My thoughts on this. They'll be paying the bar staff, they'll be paying the security, the caterers will be paid, as will the chefs and the waiting staff. No doubt the venue will also expect something, Personally I don't do charity shows unless I'm being paid.
8. It's a brilliant combo. It sounds amazing with everything I'm doing, my solo stuff and my jazz stuff.
9.
Will check via Amazon. Did everything go okay with it ie any hidden charges. ? Dave
They were excellent. At the time whatever I bought was a lot cheaper than elsewhere, though that was before Sterling plummeted.
10. Via Amazon last year.
11.
Using the Markbass eq I haven't been able to dial up a good punchy sound, it's strange, there's so many much variety on there with the VLE/VPF etc. I'm now thinking I've been eq-ing the bass wrongly, when I walked out on the last two gigs it's had so much punch and presence with the mid switched in. I agree though, there be too much fiddling, I've tended to run everything flat if I can, I hate getting too technical with it but this time seems to have been a lucky mistake!
I'm prettty sure the markbass stuff is pretty flat, so you get out what you put in. Where a lot of guys go wrong is they cut the mids. It the mid range frequencies that give you the punch and ability to be heard in a band sound.
12.
I was doing this on my amp (Markbass LM3) and when I walked out it sounded very nasally, the amp is now relegated to being an amp only, all tone control is handled by my Hartke vxl pedal and now the mid control on the bass. All good fun!!
How did it sound in a full band context though ? I think too many people fiddle endlessly with the tone controls on their gear, then complain that their amps aren't loud enough or whatever.
13. I think the general consensus of opinion is, therrr being so many variables regarding strings, gauge, metal type, winding type, manufacturer etc. That it's accepted the buyer will fit new ones anyway.
14. I'd love to use a tablet at gigs. I plan to buy a iPad soon. My main bands repertoire is something like 90 songs. The actual set list depends on the venue. We have a choice of 3 vocalists who all sing in different keys, so there's 3 different arrangements for each vocal number. We're currently adding new songs to that too, because we've got new residencies offered us recently. At rehearsal on Wednesday morning we ran through about 20 new ones. So my folder contains something like 200 charts, an iPad will make things a lot easier. I'm totally gig ready, I can read pretty much anything.
15. How many times have you used a public loo and seen someone finish, and just walk out without washing their hands ? The first thing I do when buying a used bass is strip it down, clean it and put new strings on.
16. Just play a 6, best of both worlds. There's a symmetry to a 6 string, the centre 4 strings being a normal 4 string bass. If you're used to playing a 5 in normal low B tuning then that's there, with the bonus of a high C.
17. I thought he'd settled for having a karaoke ?
18. I've met him a few times, he was a visiting tutor at my uni. He was a really nice guy, always had time to talk and take questions. An immense talent too. Maybe people in real life are different to their online personae ?
19.
He used to post here. . . until the knuckle draggers chased him away.

But he is up his own arse...
Which is why this is only the 2nd time in about a month that I've visited this site.
20. It'd be interesting to compare a neck through bass, with an instrument with exactly the same hardware, electronics, strings and wood etc, but with a bolt on neck.
21. Whatever you do choose to do, just make sure it doesn't interfere with what really matters, i.e. the music. Personally I'd rather hear the song played well, rather than see someone looking daft, and playing all the wrong notes.
22. How old are you ? That really needs to be taken into account, especially if you have relatives coming along. They may never talk to you again 😊.
23. I can't speak about the videos, but much of pop music for the last 30 years has been pants anyway. I had the misfortune to be a passenger in a car with the radio tuned to radio 2 the other day. The Scottish guy going, Steve Wright on the journey back. What a load of absolute rubbish. I can't believe the number of elderly 'stars' who seem to have records put at the moment. It's coming up to Christmas I guess. Most weren't very good years ago. I mean, shaking Stevens !
24. If you own it, just click on 'options', that will give you the option to download it.
25. Where's the like button ! 😀
