1.
in a pro situation punches aren't usually pulled - if you blow it they'll tell you, specially on an expensive session
I think you've misread what I was quoting .
2.
I'd say even taking a clip on tuner out of the house is amateurish, looks like you've had it for Christmas with the guitar you're playing to me. I wouldn't tell anyone they shouldn't though, it's up to them.
Nowadays clip-on tuners are more accurate than a pedal. Plus you can't inadvertently leave yourself muted after tuning up. The most important thing is to be prepared. Have all the skills necessary, don't try and con your way through something. A band I regularly play for had a dep, he said he could read and improvise from chord charts, turned out he couldn't. Stupid things too, like remember to take your glasses, music stand, music stand light, spare batteries, a spare cable. Have the correct tools for the gig.
3. How does having a clip on tuner look amateurish ? It's surely better having it there, rather than searching for it, putting it on, switching it on, tuning and then taking it off. Mines on the back of the headstock so from the front all you can see is a little bit of the plastic clip. Don't think telling someone they've done something wrong is particularly professional. Just ask for a quick run through.
4. Maybe try something totally new ? I'm firmly of the opinion that you never know if you like it unless you try it. Learn some Bach or something. There's some beautiful music out there that sounds great on bass.
5. I believe it's extremely difficult to get.
6.
Are you one of these that don't believe schools should have sports days then? Lets all rip up those grade 8 certificates while we are here
Non competing sports days maybe. I've no problem with qualifications in music that's different.
7. I'm afraid I don't agree with turning music into a completion at a young age particularly. If there's a winner there are also losers, being a loser or runner up for some could have an awful effect on their self confidence, especially if they've maybe been talked into taking part by well meaning, but nevertheless pushy parents.
8. A woodwind player friend of mine suffers from a form of this peculiar to woodwind players, called tennis oboe. Sorry for making light of your situation, only a friend told me that rather poor joke a few gays ago.
9.
If you do reconsidered either of my two 7 strings let me know! I do have an Overwater fretted 7, but that is staying firmly with me!
Will do, it has tu be a fretted though.
10. Trades are totally welcome. I can add a little cash to the deal if necessary. I'm specifically looking for an Overwater 7 string fretted bass.
11.
There's a lot going on in Birmingham, also excellent transport links to Wolverhampton and Coventry which are also pretty decent.
Birmingham ?
12. Bristol and the southwest seem to be pretty good for the non-normal or more interesting type of music. I have a couple of solo gigs in Bath and Bristol coming up.
13. Brump.
14. I'd like to hear it without roundwound strings.
15. Boooomp ! .
16. Email him, I've found him to be very approachable and helpful.
17. DV247 have always been fine when I've ordered stuff.
18. I find you don't usually need to stray too far from your flat sound, though this probably depends on what you're using. I use matkbass gear which I love. Certainly leave the mids alone, it's these that I find give your sound the ability to be heard. Any honkiness will disappear when the band start. IMO people fiddle too much. We also play too loud.
19. Some people are brilliant at selling bands and getting gigs. I'm fine if it's just emailing places, I'd personally find going in to places and talking quite a scary proposition. A friend on mine is really excellent, he'll go in to any potential venue and talk to people for ages. I think sometimes they'll book whatever band he's selling just to get rid of him .
20. I've had a couple of trade offers. Please note that I am not at all interested in either 4 or 5 string basses. The only bass I could possibly be interested in would be a 7 string.
21. Bounce. 🤡
22. Notation is notation. As someone above has posted, you may find the circle of 4th/5ths useful.
23.
As you mention Youtube, why not get a list of songs you want to learn, and then play along. I do this and although the songs themselves may not stretch my abilities, learning more new songs in my opinion makes me a better bassist for the type of music that I do. I also pick up some tips on good runs, patterns etc this way, so I guess it must be improvement. I`d really knock a 3-4 hour practice on the head though, I think all but the most dedicated would be likely to run out of steam after a couple of hours.
I used to spend 14 hours some days. Better to plan on 4 and end up with 2, than plan on 2 and end up with 1, in my opinion of course.
24. List what you feel you want to practice. Then decide realistically how long you've got timewise. Then allocate a proportion of that time to each topic. Keep a diary of your practice regime, and don't cheat 😊. You have to be disciplined though, and really want to do whatever.
