I play bass through octave, dirt, filter & chorus for many synth sounds, but I also have a Roli Rise playing either the Moog Model D app on the iPhone or connected to the macbook playing several other synths. It's not a problem to switch between instruments mid song.

I'm gonna have to give this month's a miss. Moving house has taken all my time for this month. I'll be having a listen to the entries though & voting for my faves.

Cheers Paul. 😃 I didn't know that the Seaboard Block had smaller keys than the Rise. The Rise keys are about the same as what a regular keyboard would be. Give it a couple of weeks & you'll find you use the lines to identify the "black" keys & know where C is. It soon becomes like a keyboard, where you can play it without looking, though in MPE, it's like a fretless - you need to play fairly accurate. But you can adjust the glide so it stays on the note even if you're slightly off it. I'm seriously considering getting the Rise 49, but I really want a new bass too.

The Seaboard Block comes with Equator Player, a simplified version of Equator (which comes with the Rise). It also comes with Noise, which is a free download & worth sticking on your phone/tablet even if you don’t have a block. As for size, it’s smaller than the Rise 25. It’s just the keys part, no other controls.

I had a wee play on a real MM Bongo 5 HH. Massive sounding bass & a very playable neck. But it was in gold & I'm still not sold on the shape.

I did that same config, but went with wood humbuckers & 5 strings.

The first few times we played this song, only the singer knew it. He played it on guitar & as it's just Em7 & A7, the rest of us just jammed it. Then I bought a Bill Withers CD with it on & learned the actual bassline. The harmonics in the first bar of the A7 are a nice wee touch. The later versions that we did, I played an interpretation of the clav line during the Em7 & back to the bass line for the A7 during the non vocal parts. A bit more tricky, but sounded good.

If you're getting to play one of the greatest songs ever, you can't do anything other than look cool. Even the bassist looks cool on his chaise longue! 😎 One of my old bands used to play this song & I've been trying to get my current band to, but maybe they've just not got the coolness to play it.

Have you considered using a drumstick? A nice variation on slap stylee.

Have you tried holding your index finger between your thumb & hole finger & using it like a pick?

It can be, but the downside is you don't know if it's gonna work until you try it & different cabs at different venues can sound greatly different from one another. Also, having different cabs can cause dead spots.

Headless Status would be my first thought when someone says classic British bass, though Overwater Perception are quite commonly seen too.

I find certain songs I can play faster with plectrum & others faster with fingers. I tend to choose which one is going to give the sound I want for the song. I can play Rhythm Stick with a plectrum, but it doesn't sound right. I'm surprised you can't string skip with a plectrum. I started out pretty much the same as you & now mostly play finger style (though still have a couple of songs in the set that require said bit of plastic). Practise. Rhythm Stick is a good number for getting plectrum playing up to speed (I do the first note as an upstroke).

That's good to know. I snapped the D string on my TIs & replaced them with a set of Chromes. I might swap the E & A back to the TIs.

I'm gonna throw in D'Addario Chromes to your mix. They're flatwound, but they're a brighter sounding flatwound.

I’ve got the start of the track in my head already, but I’ve a busy month ahead. Hopefully I might get things done.

I had a wee blast on a couple of Basic Ken Taylor 5ers. One a 30th anniversary & the other a bubinga. Compared them next to a Sadowsky Metro, a Mayones Jazz, a MM Bongo & a few Ibbys too. I loved the sound of the Bongo, but I’m not sold on the shape & a gold finish isn’t my thaing. The Sandbergs sounded very similar & the lows from them are immense. I actually prefer them to every other bass that I played. I liked the Mayones & the Sadowskys, but despite their higher premiums, didn’t play as well as the Sandberds. I think I may have found my bass! 😎

I had a wee blast on one of these today. What a fantastic sound too. Held it’s own against a £2600 Mayones too, the Mayones was better, but not by much.

What about playing bass on keys? should that be basskeyschat?
