1.
The covers band I play in doesn't use a set list. We do have a list of around 40 songs that we can pick from, but we don't physically use a piece of paper with songs written on it in the order we're going to play them. This generally leads to some gaps between songs while the two guitarists (one of them sings lead) decide which song to play next. Add to this the gaps between songs while the singer changes his guitar for no reason other than a Les Paul or a Strat was used on the original, so that's what he has to play for that particular song. All this leads to a set that doesn't flow at all, and if we manage to get people up and dancing, the aforementioned guitar-changing-song-deciding-habit tends to kill the moment, and the dancers go and sit down while these two discuss the next song. This came to a head on Saturday when the guitarists disagreed over which tune to play. Singer wanted to play a Free song, non-singer wanted to play a Foo Fighters song. Non-singer started to play the opening riff, while singer told him "no, we're doing Free". This then led to non-singer getting stroppy and going "fine, have it your way", then started to play opening riff to the Free tune in a manner which suggested that he wasn't a happy bunny. Singer then decides to say quite loudly "Oh I'm not in the mood for this!" but eventually we all join in and finish the song. The mood then lightens toward the end of the first set and everyone is friends again. The joys of being in a band with no set list! We have 50+ gigs booked for this year, and I will honour every one of them, but at the end of the year I'm off. Anyone else have to deal with childish, ego maniacs while playing in a PUB COVERS BAND?
That sounds like us but we do have a set list. The guitarists brain starts to use chaos mode and he cant help but saying "I'm not playing that one yet me". It then takes a while for him to get his bearings and decide which one he does want to play. I suspect it must be the enhancements... Good job we are all mates and don't take ourselves too seriously!
2.
Well at the Brighton Rockshop (which Herbie Flowers kinda leads) he said to me on tuesday, I'll bring in my '59 jazz and you can have a go, which was really cool for him to say, cos I'm only like 16 and all. It was really easy to play for a bass with such a high action, Because of the height (and tapewound strings) it had a rather fretless-like sound. I've never played an instrument so old and I'd like to thank Herbie for letting me have a go,
I bought a bass flightcase from ebay a few years ago. It has Herbie Flowers stencilled on it and loads of tour stickers Abbey Rd etc. It was kind of hinted it was his. It will fit my P but I always though it would be better suited for a Jazz. Its the heaviest case in the world! I might have the very case his 59 sat in!
3. Hi, I can see them now. You are right. It looks great with the black plate!
4. Ummm, I can see no pictures? Only . Any ideas?
5. Spied this on ebay. Its the one that was on last year with a different description. I've messaged him and he says its legit. http://cgi.ebay.co.u...E:X:RTQ:GB:1123 I don't think the price is that bad even without the history.... or maybe thats cos I'm a soft git when it comes to The Clash!
6. I've been going in circles for years but recently we have managed to get two of our childhood local heroes in the band! Its really odd. I used to be at the front at their gigs in the late 70's/early 80's. Whodathought that then!
7. Definitely the wrong category. It should be listed under the drummers section...
8. Thanks for the input everyone. It does look like that but I think the pictures are a bit elongated and make it look far thinner than it actually is. Its got a few more scratches than I thought too. I think my lad has been playing it, or playing with it...
9. Hi, any genuine parts I suppose but wouldn't mind a non genuine decent bridge or P/J neck especially with a maple board. Maybe some seymour pickups etc. Dunc
10.
Ye Gods... the first bass I ever picked up was a Kay. Bloody awful, it was. You could pass a ham sandwich between the strings and the fretboard without disturbing the Branston. The second bass I ever picked up, an Encore Coaster, was a delight in comparison.
A guy I know bought a brand new Kay Precision in about 1979. It weighs a ton and sounds and plays terribly. However, it is still in showroom condition and he likes it. I don't think he has played it for 20 years and believes it will become priceless one day!
11. I came across this on youtube and now I appreciate how lucky I really am. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDn5DXX_1Tg
12. I traded this with MoJo and I am seriously thinking of buying it back!!
13.
Investigating it? What was there to investigate?
I had never heard one before or read a review. After I listened to a few on youtube I thought I'll have a go at that! Unfortunately it had sold...
14. I was like a kid with a catalogue at Christmas when I first found it!
15. This has probably come up before but its no wonder places like ebay are full of fakes. Im sure on this site (there are many others) I found a copy of a Squier Silver Series Precision that someone on here had once pointed out something similar on fleabay. Nobody could agree if it was fake as nobody thought faking a Silver Series was worthwhile. I must admit that some of their instruments are very tempting...
16. Sold when I was investigating it! Im heading your way at weekend too!!
17.
Bent bit of tin = bbot Any interest in an early 80s MIJ Ibanez Roadstar? Cheers
Hi, sorry ash I don't really fancy a Roadster. Thanks for the interest though...
18. So if somebody was to pick it up, would you throw in a cup of tea and a slice of cake?
