So, why is that we are DB and EUB players?
thisnameistaken replied to ubassman's topic in EUB and Double Bass
I got to the point where I needed to take a year off bass guitar to let my wrists recover. I still can't really play BG regularly but I can play double bass as much as I like. -
Yeah whiskey or red wine for me (rioja or shiraz maybe). I don't drink beer when it's late or I will have to get out of bed for a massive wazz at some point.
-
I don't think you'd see much from all the way back there anyway. Go see smaller bands in smaller venues, it's also cheaper and less predictable.
-
If the G is too low and the bridge is in (pretty much) the right position on both axes, then there might not be much you can do except replace the bridge. That's not a cheap thing to do, probably £80+. Bear in mind too that if the current strings are steel and you're planning to put Super Silvers on it the strings will need to be higher to play properly with the lower tension, so a new bridge might be on the cards then.

My Double Bass Teacher is like a drug dealer!
thisnameistaken replied to bassfunk's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Good point on the strings - be sure to ask what strings are on it. A good set of strings is anywhere from £80 (I don't know how Innovation make good strings for those prices but they do) to £250 or more, so getting a good set of strings rather than whatever came stock on the bass would add a lot of value to the deal. -
If you can stretch the budget a bit then a second hand GK MB150 would be worth considering.
Agreed. I've used one a few times in the past on DB and they work very well.

Shhh, don't tell the missus, I've just pulled the trigger.

Aw man that's a shame. If there's no damage to the box then it sounds like it just fell off. Take a photo of the box and the bass and send them to Gedo, I'm sure they'll sort it out for you. I'm very surprised, I haven't heard of anybody having problems with their basses in the past. Maybe it's karma for lying to your wife. -
How do YOU make money playing bass?
thisnameistaken replied to AndyBob09's topic in General Discussion
I made a living out of music for a couple of years but I've been much happier since I got a job and only did the music I wanted to do. -
I never go in Banks', although last time I did they had two of the Antigua reissues in which was surprising. I like the look of that bass, very surf-friendly.

Good and bad ways to listen to music
thisnameistaken replied to MiltyG565's topic in General Discussion
At work it's earbuds, in the car it's car speakers, when mixing it's monitors, listening at home it could be various pairs of speakers around the house but the music is usually streamed off my network drive over wifi using my phone as a remote and then to the speakers via bluetooth, and it's mostly mp3. Which is mostly fine, and very convenient. -
The "traditional" order is: Wah - Dirt - Modulation - Delay/Reverb
Is it? It makes more sense to put filters after distortion. The distortion will add more harmonics, giving the filter more interesting content to chew on. Anyway, OP: Use your ears. Clearly you are going to get conflicting advice anyway.

If you're using piezo pickups, avoid cabinets that have a pronounced midrange hump.

It's only HMRC that slows stuff down, and since your package originated within the EU the tax bastards won't touch it, so it shouldn't get held up. -
Stringing Through The Body v Stringing Through The Bridge
thisnameistaken replied to Dingus's topic in General Discussion
Tension is a word that's misused a lot. The word is compliance, as Mr F says above.
Right. So if you string a bass through the body you add, what an inch or so to the length of the string and this makes it more elastic. If it's a linear relationship then I suppose on a 34" scale bass the string might be 3% more elastic. Is that enough to even notice? And why would you want a string to be more elastic? I guess this means the best bass design for a decent B string is a headless. -
I managed 90 seconds. They managed to clash pretty badly in that time, the bass guitarist ran out of talent at one point, and the double bass just sounded bad when he soloed - either he likes that bad sound or he's badly recorded. Wish they were playing something more interesting than a blues jam, but they seem pretty content with themselves to just do a blues jam.

For people with more than 1 bass...
thisnameistaken replied to RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE's topic in General Discussion
No I'll always have two bass guitars - one strung with rounds and one with flats. Similarly I think I'll always have two double basses - one nice one for recording and one for busking. -
Stringing Through The Body v Stringing Through The Bridge
thisnameistaken replied to Dingus's topic in General Discussion
If there was more tension there would be higher pitch, that's how strings work. It's a lot of silly bollocks. -
I have a FretKing guitar that has a similar system although it's a three way rotary combined with a standard toggle pickup selector. Very effective.
Patrick Eggle did something like that on their Berlins. A three-position switch to choose which pickups are on, and a three-position rotary to decide which coils on the humbuckers to use (one, the other, or both). It's a neat setup.

Sticky dots? Basses are too pretty to put sticky dots on. -

Hartke LH500 Bass Head Amplifier SOLD
thisnameistaken replied to Keary5644's topic in Amps and Cabs For Sale
Such a great head. I gigged one for a couple of years and only replaced it when I took up double bass and needed something that was more flexible. For bass guitar these things sound fantastic, are mega loud, and built like tanks. Future classic. And stupidly cheap. Don't be put off by the price, you could play this amp for the rest of your life and not miss out on anything. -

Yeah the box was quite a bit bigger than me, probably 7ft.
