1. Fantastically simple idea. Here's my Quo tribute/cover band. https://www.facebook.com/statusnoscotland Now I'm going to work my way through every link on this thread. And I'll keep checking in to like more. 'mon the Bass Chat community!
2.
^^^^^^^ I suppose the upside of this was. there was no audience left to witness the Red face disaster. Upon seeing the 'Stand', they had all done a U turn during venue entry.
If only they had!
3. As an experienced player who sometimes uses a stand (discreetly placed to the side of the PA and hidden as much as possible) this thread brought back a memory of a fateful gig. I was asked to play a one-off show with a local church ceilidh band for a dance and learnt a few tunes that I definitely needed prompts and reminders for. There were about 10 players on this old church hall stage and come the night of the gig I set my amp up, sat on my chair (they do that at ceilidh gigs) placed my music stand in front of me and arranged my music sheets in good order. The band leader counted in the first tune and at that initial mighty 'daddaaa' that begins every Scottish Country Dance tune everyone on the stage began to stamp their feet in time and my music stand fell over scattering paper all over the stage. They didn't miss a beat and one shame-faced bass player busked his way through the first tune extremely red of face. Does Bass Chat have an on the night disasters forum?
4. Still no response from the shop. Customer service zero. When I made 2 visits and 1 phone call the least they can do is call me when they said they would. And people wonder why we buy items online?
5. There's not much you can do when the dreaded lurgy strikes. If it was that bad the day before the gig perhaps you should have called on a dep but if it struck without warning on the night that's just bad luck.
6. I called last week. Will be nearby next Friday so will go in and look at the embarrassment on his face if he hasn't phoned by then. I'm a trusting kind of man so will assume he's really trying hard to please a customer.
7. Well what do you know? Now Thursday late afternoon and not a cheep from the shop.
8. Put an elasticated ponytail band round the neck at the 2nd fret. This stops all unwanted ringing. Victor Wooten recommends it. I'm not anywhere near his league but it does work a treat for open A and E strings in basic rock songs. I buy mine from Claire's Accessories
9. Thanks Mike257 and Bluesparky I'm waiting on the call from my local shop to tell me we my unit arrives. Looking like Tuesday now. Then I'll dive into the world of DMX. Looks like fun. Thanks to everyone who contributed.
10. Thanks again TimR. I used a Ryger controller with two sets of 4 coloured Par56 cans for years but now that LED/DMX is the way of the world I want to recreate what I had. Basically six preset scenes that covered every option I needed for a good pub/club gig. I'll phone the shop on Wednesday and see if they did actually ask the KAM rep.
11. Latest, I went to the shop where I bought the KAM Powerbars and the chappie said he'll speak with a couple of his reps and I've to phone next week. He seemed a bit nonplussed when I explained that i wanted the units to do more than the pre-programmed pedal allowed. Will see what transpires and no doubt come back to Basschat for more advice. Thanks all.
12. I'd not heard of Trouble Funk before. Now i'm hooked. The whole documentary is very good.
13. Thanks Bert, Tim and Norris. Now I know that it seems possible to control KAMs with one of these I've dug out my KAM users manual and am ready to delve into the dark art of DMX Wish me luck.
14. Thanks Bertbass but the Ryger website from your first URL says "The FL-P1 will NOT control KAM Powerbars"
15. Can I buy an inexpensive DMX controller and use it to replace the footswitch on my KAM Powerbar lights? The lights are excellent but the footswitch provided only works in a cycle programme which is a bit of a pain. Will something like the Obey 4 or similar work with KAM? I bought this set to replace my really old and knackered Par cans which I operated from a Ryger controller, this gave me lots of options to light the stage in a variety of scenes. OK it wasn't the Pink Floyd show but it was pretty good for my requirements. My budget is under £100 Thanks
16. Saturday night at (or to be precise) on The Ferry in Glasgow Always a great gig with a brilliant audience. We're a five piece and the keyboard player plays guitar on two songs. The photograph was taken during Quo's magnum opus - Slow Train. This Saturday we're heading to Falkirk.
17. Everyone likes to show off their shiny bass but I think we need to see some of the home made covers to provide inspiration. Pix please...
18. A holiday caravan park in Fife. Entertainment is usually of the one man/woman + midi files type of show. We were booked as a full five piece, PA, lights, Quo Tribute Show. Were a bit concerned when we arrived and saw the venue - always a risk of children running around and asking for Lady Ga Ga songs but they were all back in their caravans by the 9pm start time. The show was sold out and people were turned away, a famous first for us. Played two 75 minute sets and while no-one danced or shook dandruff onto the floor the audience reaction was excellent and we went down well. Sound was good in a low ceilinged room full of human baffles. Talk of a return booking next year. We really must concede defeat and learn bloody In The Army Now for next time. Only downside was getting home at 3:30am but that's Rock & Roll Thengyewangoonite!
19. You're not wrong. Bass is a dark art known to a minority. Like goalies.
20. Cool, I've seen Quo-Caine clips on YouTube. Good band and one of the few Quo tribs with a keyboard. Same as us. This is StatusNo playing Slow Train (with the keys player adding a third guitar for the jig) http://youtu.be/wEgB9H-73Co
21. Thanks for the reply. What's Colin's band called? I'll probably know of them. We're a close knit community in Quo Tributeland Sifting through some video from the weekend to find a suitable clip.
22. 8 Feb 2014, The Ferry, Glasgow Life in Quo tribute land.
23. Thought I'd give an update and close this topic. Thanks to everyone who participated. Saturday's show was very good with a couple of hundred people making plenty of noise. The stage was hollow. I gave the sound man a pre EQ signal. My amp settings were Gain 4 / Bass 7 / Mid 4 with a 2 KHz boost / Treble 7 I was told that the bass sounded good from the audience and could be felt in the chest. So that's a good sign. Onstage sound and vol was good too. Next show is a smaller venue with a different PA that we'll mix ourselves but I'll be sure to use my new knowledge. Bye for now.
24. OP here. I spent time at home trying some of the advice you've all given and have settled on a setting that's different to my usual but sounds like it might do the trick. I'll try it at volume in the studio this week before the gig next Saturday. Decided to use the Zoom purely as a tuner and bring a specific effect in for one song in the set. Have made notes for the soundman too. Thanks again.
25.
Indeed you did, which is much more useful than just saying "mids" Without knowing the actual problem we have no way of knowing which frequency is lacking and/or overpowering. OP - when you play live, do you give the soundman a DI pre or post EQ? Some amp+cab setups will accentuate or attenuate specific frequencies, so you end up tailoring your EQ to the rig. If the rig has a very different response to the soundman's PA rig, and you send the soundman a post EQ signal, it may be near impossible for him to "fix" it to suit his rig.
Pre-EQ
