Very lovely - much the most aesthetically pleasing of the KS designs for me
Even though it might be considered a "budget" model by some Smith owners and it lacks the WOW factor of the more exotic wood finish models, I love it because it retains the typical Smith sound, has wonderful build quality and feel. A real quality bass without all the 'flash and bling'.

Hi Guys, I thought I would share my latest acquisition. I really wanted to go from a 5 to 6 string but was put off by the very wide finger board that most six stringers have. Most seem to have standard 19-18mm string spacing, this really would be to wide for my bumpy little girl hands.. So I started to look for a narrow spacing six string and came across Ken Smith. His Burner range form the late 80's - 90's have a narrow 16mm spacing on the 5 and 6 string models. I really did not know much about Ken Smith basses other than they cost a fair wedge of money and have a very clean but warm tone. After checking out You tube for various examples I came to the conclusion a Burner is what I needed as my first six stringer. So here it is.............. a Ken Smith Burner 6................... It is in great condition considering it is 18 years old with just a ding to the back of the upper horn. Has any Basschatter owned this............I would love to know its history. Burners are very rare, someone must know??
I wish I'd learnt when I was younger. The reality currently is between work and all the constraints of life I simply don't have the time. I can see myself learning around retirement age and kicking myself for not having done it sooner. Right now it isn't and can't be a priority.
+1 on the above Tim. Wish I started years ago.....I've just started lessons last month so wont kick myself to hard when I retire.

Brimar 12AX7/ECC83 tubes SOLD
voxpop replied to galore's topic in Accessories & Other Musically Related Items For Sale
Forgive my ignorance, but how does a valve produce 'growly mids'?
Like all pieces of equipment a valve has a 'sound'. Brimar, like Mullard were made in the UK and produce a rich warm sound with great bass and mid detail but with a very soft top end. The down side to this warm sound is they can sometimes sound soft and lack punch and detail. See this like for details............ http://thetubestore.com/12ax7review.html#summary The web is full of reviews just goggle ECC83 or 12AX7 -

F/S Now. Hohner 6 string neck through, gator case. Dorset
voxpop replied to oldslapper's topic in Basses For Sale
Hey Marc, That's a lovely Sanberg, but I'm having to sell stuff to pay domestic bills at the moment, sorry! John PS If I'd had the money I'd probably buy your Spyder, I've always fancied one of them.
Hi John, The Spyder is a fantastic amp, it sound like my Little Bastard with more power and guts, a real beast of an amp. Its well worth considering as the price is very good. I've used it no more than a dozen times and it is as new. Let me know if you want it. Thanks mate. Marc -
The bass is still available, but I will not post out. The last bass I sent was completely mashed by the courier and took 6 months to settle the claim. I dont have a hard case for it and wont take the risk.If the bass was damaged it would cost over £1800 to order another from Sandberg and have a 4 month wait to have it built. I'm sure you understand that it's a risk that I'm not going to take. I'm willing to meet you half way by car or train. Hope this helps. Marc
Man, that's great. But one too many strings for me. Good luckwith it!
Dont let the extra string put you off, it is very easy to go from a 4 -5 with Sandberg as the strings have adjustable spacing. You can set them from 16 -18mm with very little effort.

voxpop replied to Major-Minor's topic in Theory and Technique
Thank you Major for all the time and effort to up load all this info. After 15 years of playing bass I have final started to learn how to read music. I've printed off all your lessons and will, over the next decade, plough through them and master this wonderful instrument call bass. Thanks again. -

Use this link, go to page two and zoom in on the bridge, it has been photographed with the string sitting on the saddle. http://www.bassguitarmagazine.com/index.ph...&Itemid=101

I've just had a look at page 50 and I think its not 'sitting' in the saddle groove correctly. Its just sitting on the top of the saddle.??

I have been having a good old play with my little bastard today and have set it up to a very neutral sound using EA CLX110 cabs and a wide range of music from Jazz to Rock. The setting that give the most accurate hifi sound are.............. Mid knob at 1 o'clock position Mid shift down Bass knob 5 o'clock position (full) Bass shift up Treble knob 9 o'clock position Bright down When I then play my Sandberg through it, it sounds just like going into a desk for recording......................very neutral. Once you have this 'neutral' position you can then change the sound to suit knowing where you came from. Hope this is a help.....................or it could be I've to much time on my hands since being made redundant.
Unless you pull them out with your mouth It seems the Little Bastard suffers from the same issues most Mesa 400+'s do, they just shouldn't be putting 12ax7's in the drive section.
+1 on that one.
Brilliant, sounds like you've found the ideal solution. I'd be interested in hearing it. Perhaps Ashdown should offer that as an option?
You have the option of simply changing the two preamp valves yourself.... ECC83's will give you 100% of the available gain. ECC81's will give 70 - 80%. ECC82's will give 20- 30%. Simply remove the wooden case and start swapping to find the gain that suits you and your bass.
I tried one of these out at the weekend. I was really disappointed in it. It was far too distorted for bass (it wasn't mild distortion it was a LOT of distortion). I don't get it - because bassists rarely distort their sound much even in metal or Punk bands. Much more suited to guitar I would have thought
I found a way of lowing the input gain by replacing the two ECC83 valves for ECC82's. These have around 20% of the power of the ECC83. This has stopped the preamp from distorting completely. If you want distortion just crank up the master volume. Its a very cheap fix. Mine sounds great with the new valves, warm and juicy with no fuzzy distortion.
