2. Ive ordered a UK one..............it will take 2 weeks to build. If you ordered a China built one they are coming into the UK in August. This is the first shipment.
  3. So far there has been tons of advice, with lots of differing opinions. This is what I like about Basschat......everyone has had their say. I picked up a very cheap set of Regular Slinky 5 string nickel 45-130 from the bay. Will give these ago before trying either the Overwater or DR Hi Beams.
I'm thinking of trying a 35" five string with flats - apart from the Picatos mentioned in the thread does anyone know any decent ones for a 35" please? Cheers, B.
I've just found these..........Overwater make 35" scale strings.
Hey Marc, got the pimping bug eh? Wonder where you got that from...... Is it std string spaciing (nut and bridge)? I'll do some research on the Fender site.
The strings sit in small grooves in the bridge. If you look at the first picture you will see 3- 4 slots to choose from. Spacing can be changed to suit your fingers and playing.

Hi Guys , I feel GAS coming on so here is a gentle but series feeler. Take one 2009 USA standard 5 string Jazz, get an Ebony lined fretless board put on by the nice guys at THE GALLERY. Upgrade the standard pickups to Seymour Duncan '64 for that true vintage sound. Put in a Creation REDEEMER active preamp which adds punch and volume. Put on a Black Pearloid scratch plate. Add a Fender Marcus Miller 5 string Pick guard. Lastly string with TI flats. Total price to do all these mods was £1650. I will take £800 complete with the Fender hard case and all the unused case candy. Postage is £30 for a courier, next day, insured signed for service. It is in UNMARKED MINT CONDITION.
  13. Bump for new price................ £20 inc postage for TWO sets.
  14.
There's really not much I don't like about the Overwaters - maybe the tone's just not quite bright enough for me. I've used HiBeams before & they were great on my fretted & I have them on my fretless at the moment - they are about 2 years old now & sound great for that bass. As far as I can make out all DRs are manufactured to cater for 35" scale - in fact I've had the thickest part of the E string winding *just* go on to the tuning post on a 34" scale bass. I also like Rotosound 55 Pressurewounds - they sound a lot like the HiBeams, but I haven't seen them in 35" scale. I'll probably try LoRiders next as I like a bit of tension. G.
Thanks for all the info......it looks like I will try out the Hi Beams or Overwater.
  15.
I use Picato myself.. was into flats for a fair while, but at the mo I'm really enjoying the halfrounds. I prefer stainless, but alot go for nickel roundwound, possibly less stress for your frets! As I don't have a fretted bass on the go, I can't really comment on 'normal' slap tone, but I'm well happy with them on fretless ebony board. Extra bonus - being British made (Treorchy) they're remarkably cheap!
Will the' Long scale' sets fit a 35" neck??? They seen to be very cheap compared to the other more 'well known' brands.
  16.
All DRs seem to be suitable for 35". I've got Overwaters on mine, but I'll probably change to DRs next time. G.
What dont you like about the overwaters ? I noticed they are one of the few 'made for 35" scale".
  17. Im about to get a 35" scale Jazz bass and need advise on wait guage and length strings I will need. What do you guys use and why??? Im looking for a LOW tension lightish guage for a bit of slap. Thanks in advance.
  18. Creation Labs Redeemer for sale. This is a really simple way of getting an active punchy sound without have to deal with the extra tone controls a fully active preamp gives..........keeping it very simple seems to give a purer tone. http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_sp...s_Redeemer.html The Redeemer is an innovative buffer circuit that eliminates tone loss caused by the interaction of instrument electronics and the loading effect of the cable, effects units and amplifier. The instrument is effectively insulated from the rest of the signal chain providing these benefits: IMPROVED NOTE CLARITY Individual notes within chords are heard with greater detail - harmonics jump right out! QUICKER TRANSIENT ATTACK The guitar becomes very responsive to the players picking velocity and strength... This is something you will feel! ULTRA LINEAR AND TRANSPARENT The timbre of the instrument stays consistent, especially when “rolling back” the volume controls! No loss of high frequencies when you turn down your instruments volume - It's like having a master volume that keeps your tone the same at any volume level. PLUG DIRECTLY INTO THE LINE INPUT ON A MIXER Because the output impedance is less than 300ohms the circuit can easily drive a line input for going direct to a mixer. This results in a clear, full range of tone that sounds better than using a direct box for live or recording applications. SUPER AUDIOPHILE SPECS: Flat frequency response: 10 Hz - 50 kHz! Noise floor: -125 dB! Distortion: 0.0005% Comes complete with box and instructions. Offered at £40 posted........saving £30.00.
  19.
Ahhhh that makes sense.... now. I was thinking of changing the valves to Mullards like you did, do you think they've a high enough output??
No, I put in Mullard M8136 which is a rare military version of the ECC81 / 12AT7 which has a gain of about 60-70% of a ECC83. I like the lower gain, non overdrive, but very warm sound a Mullard gives. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2NOS-Mullard-M8162-S...s-/230486276363 Check out Watford vales for gain advice..... 20.
The Spyder was delivered today... Really great looking amp in its shiney chrome splender! Sounds fantastic , but I don't seem to be able to get an overdriven sound out of it when cranking the gain up and the VU needle doesn't budge as far as I thought it would - Have I got a duff one or am I being a cock?
The VU meter is for OUTPUT not input like most other Ashdowns. It confused me at first also. I replaced the two ECC83 valves...try going for a high output design, this will over drive the input and give a warm slightly distorted sound.
  21.
On the verge of getting the Spyder just a little miffed about the lack of XLR ( i'll have to carry an adapter me thinks) and Tuner out...... Anyone know if it's an easy job to mod an amp with DI XLR and a Tuner out?? Ashdown built me a Combo cab with a 2 u rack space so the Spyder would be ideal - mind you I think i'll sell the combo ABM EVO III amp..
The DI would be easy enough, just drill a bigger hole and wire up a quality XLR socket. If Ashdown dont offer a mod I will have a go myself. I dont know about the Tuner out.
