How many mistakes per gig do you make?
Glad you said yes Doddy. I'm trying to progress beyond the rudimentary at the age of 54.
Right I'm on it tomorrow, day off, got some stuff to learn and will get me books out and set myself a program. Thanks for the encouragement! -
Well it should have sounded OK because the second chord is actually F/G so by playing A in the bass you've just turned an Fadd2 to an plain F major inversion - hardly harmonic crime of the century. Anyway if that were me, I would find a way the A fit over the first beat of F/G and play it again the next time round - maybe play something like | D Bb A G | A G G G|. This way I could claim it was deliberate all along
Well that went totally over my head *reaches for dust covered theory books in back of cupboard* In truth I did slide rather sheepishly down to the G but probably about two beats too late to cover the cock up! But hey, we had a laugh which was all that mattered in the end. Do you think at nearly 52yo I could be capable of reading music again? Learnt at school, joined a band when I left, forgot the lot! -

Last night? One!! One fecking mistake in a gig we were recording and it was the second note of the grand finale encore........it was a corker,a total duffer! Still got the Blues, Gary Moore, chord pattern goes from D to G but I played D to A instead. Couldn't believe it, neither could my band mates. They beat me with Klingon pain sticks afterwards, hmm, might be a mistake worth making again -
........you get a wireless link and walk out into the audience! So normally we just rely on the singer checking the balance and I'm usually standing onstage (ie corner of the pub by the toilets!) just cranking up to what seems an acceptable level and leaving it at that. So I got a wireless and during soundcheck I had a wander out to singer territory and beyond. Holy crap, TC Electronic BH500 into TC 2x10 and Barefaced Compact 1x15. It was a monster sound, the bottom end from that Compact was shaking the whole pub. I never knew, honest! It was a total revelation. So in true bassist tradition I said to the singer do you think that sounds ok to which she answered yup fine, really good, so I left it as it was! We then played a great gig only tempered by my bloody cough which had screwed my throat so I couldn't add any barking vocals at all which was a shame as we were recording the gig. Needless to say I had a wander round the pub during the bass bit in The Chain. Guitard is thinking of getting one now, he says to check his out front sound, tbh I think he's worried I'll out pose him Of course there's no chance while I've got my landing lights on my Status and I don't think he'll butcher any of his PRS's to keep up!

Singer "lets keep Dakota, Sex on Fire and Mustang Sally in the set"! -
Regardless of the SM58 issue, best avoid mics with switches or tape them 'open' with bright red electrical tape. If you are holding a mic that has been switched off, but is still plugged through a live PA, switching it on again will produce the most Godalmighty POP you can imagine. Do this at a venue with a sound engineer and he'll likely be waiting for you in the carpark, probably holding a boom arm in a menacing sort of way ...
We only run a small self run pubsize PA and switching on/off has never caused a popping problem. The singer invariably switches hers off in between songs as a matter of habit. Also it's handy to eliminate the onstage(corner of pub) waffle that inevitably starts up at half way. I just want to upgrade to a better mike and the industry standard sm58 fits the bill nicely.

Cheers guys, I'll pop to Andertons of Guildford at the weekend, £91! The one on ebay for £161.71 IS a 58s! Unreal price+£2.20 2nd class mail!
-
The one with the on/off switch, looking on eBay they vary in price so much. There's one in Ireland for £60+4.99 postage brand new, only opened to check it and yet all the others are £90+, some as high as £160. Question is should I be wary of buying the £60 one. Are there ringers out there? Seller has 219 feedback 100%.

Just a quick note to thank Mark for his customer service. Bought an item off him just after Xmas which worked perfectly at home. As is typical of electrical items when I went to use it at a gig for the first time Saturday it was dead! Phoned Mark on Monday morning and replacement was with me today. Great service!

My words - "You silly b****** ". I know when his mum visits she suposedly kicks the headstone and tells him what a silly git he was. There but for the grace of god and a few good choices go I. Emails go round that we need to learn In These Arms by Bon Jovi for a birthday party. Due to illness we are unable to rehearse in the week before. No probs we can wing it on the night. Get to the night and keyboardist says "oh I've learnt Always!" Give him his due though he slammed his headphones on and keyboard on the iPhone and learnt the damned song. He's the technical whizz in the band but maybe reading emails is beyond him -
Don't play it anymore (cos we don't have a female singer!) but I always loved playing You Oughtta Know by alanis Morisette. I heard somewhere that Flea and Chad Smith were on it but don't know if that's true.
Love this, play it most gigs, don't really follow the Flea lines much, tend to jam my own lines round them. Also love Superstition, dead simple but such a lovely groove. My lot won't do it but another band I've depped with does so I look forward to the next opportunity.
Barneyg - let us know if you're playing the Barley Mow again. Quite near my Dad's and I could combine it with a visit to the old duffer. Can't come down next Sat though as am going to a party in Brum.
Will do Shell! Nothing booked at the mo but hopefully get a few dates on Saturday.

Played a birthday party at my local last night. Literally across the road so I loaded my gear in at 5.30pm and had a couple of pints before dinner. We had planned to have a rehearsal on tuesday to learn a couple of requests the birthday girl had asked for but due to illness all round it didn't happen so it was a case of it'll be alright on the night. Nothing too difficult though so we sound checked one and just did the other straight off later in the set, I love my band! Had a great night, fed and well paid and needless to say I had a few sherbets as I only had to walk home. I've been off work with a damned chest cold coughing up aliens all week and it was the first day I actually felt better. I seem to have sweated the cold out as it seems to have disappeared this morning. I'll be over the pub later to retrieve my gear! Last one before Chrimbo next Saturday at the Barley Mow, Shepperton........singer and guitard have designs on doing Fairy Tale of New York, no rehearsal again so should be a laugh!
Yeah after Hugh Manson, who built me a bass almost 15 years ago....
Yeah I did think so looking at your sig....hehe! Used to live in Exeter so Manson's was a regular wheel and deal place for me, dealt with Adrian mainly but our guitard was a good friend of Hugh's so met him many times. Didn't have the bunz to have anything custom built back then though. That's a nice looking bass!
