1. I use a 112 Berg & a Mark Bass 1x15HR & IT kills!!! Superb match up here. But with my Berg NV215 I've NEVER NEEDED the extra spkrs so haven't tried it live- DID ttry the NV610 & NV215 together thru my Ampeg SVTII- WOWEEE!!!!!!!!! HHUUGE sound!!!!
2. Looks like the R500 remarketed & with a tube gain section as well as gain & a few more bells & whistles. I LIKEY!!!!!!!!! Damn the fact theta my LMII is doin me perfectly well. ;-)
3. sorry if my AWSTRAYAN (Australian) internet slang was too much..... Mening..... I HAD a JCM800 Superbass. Was great. Nice amp- nice & NASTY -meaning good growling rock tones. But I found it not very versatile, so I sold it as I need 'VERSATILITY'. With the money from the sale of the Marshall JCM800 I bought a 2nd hand TRAYNOR YBA200- superb amp. And- it being 200w it's got a li'l more headroom, & as it uses toroidial transformers- it's quite LIGHT weight. Better??? I hope!
4. Nice aint they!!!!>>????? Or maybe NICE aint the right word?? But U know wot I mean!!!! I got rid of mine- a '81 Superbass, simply coz I already had a 100w tube amp in the V4BH Ampeg & that does it all & is a tad more versatile & thus got more use! But I grabbed a Traynor YBA200 -200w all tube- with the $$$ from the sale of the Marshall. THAT YBA200 gets a lotta use now- as light(??) as the V4BH/JCM800 & 2x the power- she's a beauty!!!
5. So that means U've listened to others playing it & it sounds great. So OBVIOUSLY it'll be sounding even better with YOU playing it my friend.... as YOU know it's intricacies etc...... U R TOO modest,.... I'm 100% positive she'd sound great w/ YOU playin it into that Mesa 2x15" :-)
6. So U used thesame speaker lead also- thats often MY No.1 thing to suss out. But if thats not a prob. sounds like sumthin wrong a tech needs to look at. The cabs are rated correctly for the amp???? I mean U aint running a 2ohm load to the amp that can only go as low as 4 ohms?????
7. LOOKS GREAT!!! Congrats!!! I s'pose it's basically 2 TL606 bins ontop of each other-sideways... :-/ ya know wot I mean!!!! Great cabs the ol' TL606 &I've still got my single 1x15 TL606, with a EV 400w'er in it. It sounds great & stupidly I'd probly only get $100 AUS if I chose to sell :-( I built the cab on specs I bought way back B4 this interweb thang ;-) & the spkr olone cost $450AUS WHOLESALE RRP was $795 then!!!!!!!!!! So if it weren't for my NV215 & the fact that I'm gettin older & lazier & so bought a Mark Bass HR151 = LIGHT!!!!!! then I'd STILL use that EV 1x15 every weeek. I have stacked another on top of it B4 & that was a great experience!!! So I imagine that Mesa 2x15 would be a KILLLER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nice bass too BTW-- is it a Geddy w/ a mirror guard?? Looks great anyway!
8. Ewwwwwwww!!!!!!!!!!!! To quote a disgusting Aus former politician- "I don't like it No, no. No I don't Not a bit!"
9. I had a GS112 - LOVED it. Then had the chance to grab a Bergantino AE112 & AM SOLD on that now. I like it FAR more & altho I aint got 2 of, apparently-like two GS112's - two AE112's is killer also. I thought then GS112 was a great li'l cab myself. I couldn't imagine it being able to handle a loud drummer by itself tho-(My view) But .... I DID ttry the GS112 AND the berg AE112 together. GOOD, but the Berg is a bit more sensitive & thus louder & the 2 didn't match up that well. so Bye bye GS112. I LOVE 15"s & managed to find a Mark Bass HR151 to go with the AE112- a great match. If I was in the UK- I'd go the BAREFACED route myself!!!!!! They look & sound like they'd be GREAT!
10. +1 duifferent animals completely!!!! The valve drive control on the ABM is sweet!! I find the power a bit cleaner- or ummmm,,, it just seemed to be "gruntier" as in NOT dirty(unless U turn up the drive thingy-as I said) but but packed more of a punch for the wattage. I tried both thru ABM cabs- 2x 410's.
11. Yep- the Aggie 4x12" IS PROBLY AT LEAST AS HEAVY AS THE svt810. Sorry caps lock. If U want a '70's SVT 810 SOUND but want a smaller, lighter cab U CANNOT go past the Bergantino NV610. Absolutely a stunning cab(so's their 4x12" NV412) But it's SO easy to shift- @ 97lbs (Ampeg is about 160lbs IIRC) & a great size too. There's NO way a pair of 2 1x12"s will give U anywhere NEAR the sound U are used to. But thats OK if thats what U want. Again I'd recommend Bergantino I've a Berg. AE112- another simply stunning cab- this time Neo-dymium & LIGHT!!!!!!!! BUT again- I doubt 2 of these would satisfy U- AGAIN I could be wrong. I found a Mark Bass HR151 -1x15" Neo-Dym too & LIGHT for a 1x15"!! - which I use UNDER the Berg AE112 & this works GREAT. Both cabs have the same Sensitivity rating & while the Berg AE112 is quite 'middy' but still deep & bright, the Mark Bass 1x15 is pretty 'old school' sounding & I wouldn't class it as "bright" at all, but together they're great. If U ARE able to adjust to the sound of 2 1x12" cabs the Aggie DB112's are good & a bit less scooped than the GS112 & therefore less 'modern' sounding. But IMO the Berg AE112's are WAY better. 2 of 'em would be great. I like 15's So I went with what I have, but U may like 2x 112''s
12. SO - please help me here & sorry if I'm seemon dopey- probly coz I am ;-) - but U ARE speaking re AMPEG SVTII (non-pro) ones in prod from '89-'92 . I've got a '92 model IIRC. LOVE it!!
13. U ARE talking about the SVTII not the 2PRO right???? I got a SVTII & find this interesting. I've never even tried to swap around any preamp tubes in mine & the last time I opened her up was when I got it over from the US- to swap the 110V to AUS's 240V Since then she's worked SUPERBLY-never missing a beat & sounding SUPERB. I must take a look!
14. Thanx again for the replies- ALL info & opinions are VALUED!!!! I was thinking HARMA 6L6GC, but I can probly get a quad of Winged C's for about the same price or cheaper, if U|I buy from the USA. Was gonna grab the JJ's from US anyway,,, But as DR bass threw Harma's a glowing report...... Hmmmmm. This is all good. My Tech here in Hobart recommended Winged C's as he's had good results with em & very few failures- or amps brought back to him due to the WINGED C's crappin' out. So I MAY go that route... It's interesting to hear all the views of the different V4BH owners & their experiences Thanks to all so far...........& Keep 'em comin' :-)
15. ooooooh yeah- I didn't really think of the aesthetics!!!! :-/
16. Hmmmmm I hadn't even considered the Harma 6L6GC's Are they the ones from Watford valves?? Anders- you say the JJ's are reliable- thats good!!! I've heard they're a darn good sounding tube too. Are U using the JJ 6L6GC ?? or a KT66 ??? Yeah I was thinking of grabbing a 6L6GC either 'Winged C' OR 'JJ', I guess I'll now throw Harma 6L6GC's into the mix,- especially as you say you noticed a vast improvement in the sound Dr. Thanx again. Rod
17. Yep another thanx from me to Colin B!!! Yep I'd read re & heard about the Winged C 6L6's -good idea! ANDERS-- what power tubes does your V4BH have in it?? I've heard of some shipping with Sovtek 6L6's mine had Sovtek 5881's, others with Svetlana 6L6's (NOT the Winged C's) Apparently the Winged C's are Not really Svetlana's or vice/versa... But the 'Winged C' tubes Def. have a "Winged C" on 'em Where the Svetlana's have that name only & NOP wings or C's
18. Hi, as title suggests, It's time for a new matched QUAD of output tubes for my AMPEG V4BH. So SUGGESTIONS please!!!! I'm tempted to go for the JJ 6L6GC's as I've used JJ's before & they've been good. It's got the original tubes it came with - SOVTEK 5881's - in it at the moment. They've been going fine for 3 yrs or so, but it's starting to sound a bit dull & has a li'l less output than it did. Anyone recommend any OTHER tube than the JJ's??? If so- why?? Thanks, Rod
19. BEHRINGER CAN BE unreliable & there's NO way I'd shell out good money for one IF I HAD A CHOICE- which YOU do!!! At least look at HArtke..... Or as ppl said Some older Trace Elliott gear. You need to look at how many watts are being put out at the different impedances- eg. some put out say- 500w @ 4 ohms & 300w @ 8 ohms. So an 2nd hand Hartke HA5500 is 500w @ 4 ohms - so then U need to look at a cab to suit. Do U want ONE cab & to stick with one??? If so try & get a 4 ohm cab to get the max. powwer outta the amp. So even a 300w @ 4ohm head- into a -say 4x10" 4ohm cab will be PLENTY loud enough. OR ... outta the myriad of options.... U could get an 8 ohm cab - it'll be a little quieter, but you can add another cab later...... as 2 x 8 ohm cabs = a 4 ohm load. & you COULD have ... ONE 8 ohm 4 x 10" cab & a 8 ohm 2x10" cab ( or a 8 ohm 1x15" cab) & use either/or.... there must be a STICKY on this....
20. Tube pre amps!!! in Hybrid amps... 98% of 'ema re USELESS Fender Deluxe P's- with the H pup in bridge- HATE em from experience Fizzy bass Fuzz/OD's I DONT Agree with- Tube amps=- I found that a tube POWER amp actually ADDs Booty & MOJO ;-) Sorry... guts that 95% of SS or Hybrids CANNOT duplicate no matter WHAT the wattage!! I've tried & THATS MY opinion. Also dont agree w/ Warwicks.. Love my $$!!! And My 'Ray 5
21. Agree with above post mostly... Just either get a Vernier guage, Or just buy a set of Decent -Say D'addario or similar- 45-105 or 40-100 or there-abouts strings. U can do a quick set up pretty easilythe www.stew-mac.com website has good info re set ups, as does www.activebass.com
22. +1... ANOTHER vote for a MARK BASS amp thru a Berg cab!!!!! I use a LMII > Bergantino AE112 - sometimes using my VTBASS pedal for some grit- & I've gotten SO many compliments on my tone with this rig- it aint funny!!!! Most ppl say "HOW can that much vintage tone be comin outta that li'l rig???" I explain that the VLE filter on the LMII has a lot to do w/ it(as I usually set my LMII's EQ pretty flat) & the Berg AE112 is the other BIG part of it!
23. AS I said i another thread- those BAREFACED cabs look great!! Pity they dont make 'em here so I could try one :-( s'funny how Bergantino cabs aint that expensive here in OZ-thanx to George at Bass Gear Direct.com - compared to some other brands- they're very competetive out here. Tis ALSO a pity thet Berg. don't do a single 15" ( even the NV215's been discontinued) But, At the time I WAS gonna grab another Berg AE112- To go with the AE112 I already had, the AUS $$$ dropped radically & the price of new AE112's went up a fair bit, putting one just outta my reach, & after a fair bit of research & LUCK- I found a Mark Bass STD 151HR for sale at a great price. I LOVE 15"s & even tho many experts reccomended against mixing driver sizes, I tried to find a single 15" that matched up pretty well in sensitivity & other specs- to my AE112, & the MB STD151HR did all that pretty darn well. Prevoiusly I had a Aggie GS112, & this cab- while a lovely cab- didn't match up well with the Berg AE112, I found that the more sensitive Berg cab was putting out WAY more volume than the GS112 was. So I WAS planning on grabbing another AE112- for a 2 x AE112 stack. But as I said above.... couldn't & I love 15"s anyway. So the MB STD151HR matched up(on paper anyway) to the AE112 prety well. I was VERY happy(& relieved) when I discovered they matched up extremely well together in actual use too!!! IMO/IME etc.... they sound SUPERB together. The AE112 has the simply superb clarity & punch & tone- & the 151HR has the big roundnes of a good 15". I often use the MB151HR by itself(AS I oftern use the AE112 by ITSELF too) & find the MB 151HR to be a great 1x15". Sounds very 'old school' to me. Even w/ the horn ON( either 1/2 way up on it's dial- or more) I don't find it to be a bright 15". The horn seems very subtle- which I like. I USUALLY have the horn set on about 1/4 up(on it's dial) or less & use the AE112's horn a li'l more. So- as a single 15" I highly reccomend the Mark Bass STD 151HR
24. I've a Reggie HAmilton Sig Jazz Std. A MIM active/passive & it's a BEAUTY!!! From what I've heard MOST of the MIM bases above the Standards are pretty good qual. The RW series is a good eg. too, But I like my RH Sig FAR better than my MIA Am. Series S1 Jazz. Either in active OR passive mode-I feel the RH sig is a nicer player with nicer tone - JUST MY opinion..... :-)
25. Baby rig - LMII > Berg AE112 Toddler - LMII > AE112 & Mark Bass STD151HR-1x15" Brother toddler Ampeg V4BH > AE112 & 151HR Teenager - Traynor YBA200 > Berg NV610/NV215 - or the AE112 & 151HR Adult - Ampeg SVTII > NV610 & NV215
