  1. thanks JW, really appreciate the input ... although I was hoping someone was going to talk me out of it, ha!
  2. My question is ... should I get one??? I think I've been doing too much reading and have convinced myself that i need a HPF to protect speakers and improve efficiency etc. My amp doesn't have one and dedicated pedals seem a tad pricey for such an apparently simple thing. When I say pricey I mean they don't come up 2nd hand and are hard to justify when I am not sure if they are going to make an audible difference. What 's your experience been and is it worth the cash and having to carry another box + power supply? About me: I play a passive but high output 4 string Jazz through an ABM Evo4 through some combination of a BFM Jack 12 and an Ashdown 408 neo cab. Rarely if ever plan to use both cabs together by the way .. but you never know! Thanks folks

Just bought Mark's self build cab. Lovely cab and a top transaction all round. Absolute basschat royalty! Cheers, Doug
  4. Bass 1, in the corner of the living room, mostly hidden by sofa. It's a nice retro looking jazz and does not look too bad poking it's head up. Bass 2, on longterm loan at my mates, where it annoys his wife not mine:) Electric gtr: hangs on wall in living room. Beautiful 335 in candy apple red, missus can't argue with hanging art on the wall! Acoustic gtr: not so pretty but also on the living room wall. Road worn = shabby chic in this case. Amp (head) : under the stairs. Cab: garage. Strings, cables n crap: my studio... by which I mean a drawer in the dining room which also contains a usb lead and an audio interface

  6. Hi folks, ##KEEPING THIS AFTER ALL, SUCH A GOOD LITTLE BOX! ### Selling my Battalion, you probably know what it is. I think it sounds great but a change of amp means I no longer need it. Pics to follow but for now, https://www.ehx.com/products/battalion It is in very clean condition, has only had studio use, and comes with the power supply and original box. The box is a bit tatty (northern vernacular for 'road worn' or 'reliced') but the pedal is very clean. Cheers, Doug
  7. Immaculate markbass Compressore for sale. £125 includes post to the UK. In original packaging including power supply. Can be posted in time for Christmas! Cheers, Doug
  8. me too! I've seen one in the flesh and it looked nice, was small and portable so I am trying hard to find a reason to not pull the trigger on one Not heard one yet though ...
  9. Anyone got one of these? Been seriously tempted to get one, seems like great value and a bit different. Thoughts?? https://www.pmtonline.co.uk/ashdown-mag-c112-250-bass-combo-limited-edition-tweed
  10. Hi folks, SOLD NOW. going through a bit of a cleanse here so this wonderful amp is being sold. It is in very good clean condition and works perfectly. I've used it only very lightly but enough to know that it sounds awesome and is potently loud. It is the 250w RMS amp (at 4ohms), features the glorious tube preamp (blendable with the solid state one), 12 band eq with speaker-saving red knob, plus the dual-band and eq-tilting SMX compressor. Don't let the 250w power rating fool you, these are the magical Trace Elliot Watts which seem to defy the laws of physics. It is beastly loud! I'm selling as I am not gigging at the moment and want to fund studio time. More pics are here: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1gNoFxPMZRrskEpRIMkE4vPpoboBnNB9o If any one looks at the pics and is wondering ... the little red things that can be seen at the back are Rawl plugs! They are there just there to provide a little bit of support to the amp at the back. The amp is designed to be mounted by the rack ears so they are technically redundant but I wedged them in there to provide a bit of 'suspension' at the back! Easy to remove if you want to. In terms of the price. I am looking for £200 for the amp head itself. £75 for the immaculate and GREEN flight case. That gives you a nicely racked head for £275, or you can buy either item separately. Postage in the UK is fine but is at your expense. Thanks, Doug.
  11. sorry Pete, must have forgotten to mark this as sold. They do come up on Ebay every now and again if you really want the vintage one. Doug.
  12. Hi donslow, will get some pics at the weekend (tomorrow). Price is £40 (at the top of the thread) and I'm just outside Newcastle but can post it. I think postage would be about £10 as it'd be classed as a large parcel. It is used but in pretty clean condition (usual scratch marks on the headstock protector from string ends) - with the addition of 2 shiny blue carabiners! Cheers, Doug,
  13. Totally agree with you on trusting used gear on BC. Nice idea, but I'm pretty set on a combo mate. Got a big head already (hopefully not literally!) so this is about a portable box to take to sessions and jam with. The more I think about it the more the Roland is making sense for me. I'm only drawn to the ashdown because of the tweed if I'm honest!! Ha ha, so shallow:)
  14. thanks Tontee, TC combos are a good call. They cost new what I can get a used Cube 120 for. the other one in my shortlist of the anniversary edition tweed Ashdown combo: https://www.pmtonline.co.uk/ashdown-mag-c112-250-bass-combo-limited-edition-tweed ... hate making decisions!
  15. ahh! thanks Geoff. Didn't know that about the 100. A bit of searching into how the 100 works reveals that its 100w amp is really 2 50w amps that are coupled to make 100w when only using the internal and are split when an external is used. So, a very efficient external cab at 4ohms would be fed by 60w in the 120XL, while the internal would get the same (assuming the design is the same). Either way it is 120w, the difference being the amount of air being moved and the effect of that on loudness and tone. Cheers!
  16. Anyone tried one?? Wondering how loud they get and what the situation is with the extension speaker jack. Talkbass guys seem to think a 4ohm cab is best; does that mean the amp likes to run at 2ohms (if the internal is 4ohms) or just a bit higher if the internal is 8ohms? Cheers all, Doug.
  17. hi, just had a yellow sticky note appear from another BCer, which I dismissed immediately on auto pilot (just a habit as I'm so used to dismissing pop-ups!). How do I recover it, or find out who it was from?? Cheers, Doug.
  18. Thanks for the input guys. Feel almost shameful in saying I like the pre-shape!! Yeah the dual band comp is definitely part of it, and sounds like that was inconsistent... making it even harder to replicate. I think FEA make a pedal or two that are kind of re-boots of the SMX comp, but they aren't cheap! Also glad to hear you also cut the red slider DiMarco. The quest continues, just preparing for the inevitable
  19. just to state the obvious in case anyone is unsure: this has no power amp in it. You will need to hook it up to a power amp or other bass amp if you want to use it with speakers!
  20. Returning to this question ... I am now thinking that the magic that I love in the SMX is mainly the combination of the valve preamp, the 'shape' button and the compression, combined with the red 30hz EQ slider (which frees up the speaker for useful business, as far as I know .. although that may be entirely imaginary!). That seems like a signal chain that can be re-created. So, from a technical is there something happening in trace amps that is 'behind the panel'? What I mean is, are there components in the amp that the user can't see or interact with that create the tone??? Maybe the cabs are particularly well matched?? For what its worth, I did a recording session recently with my SMX combo and it just sounded amazing. No effort to get an instantly awesome sound! What wasn't awesome was getting it up 4 flights of stairs to the live room! Cheers, Doug.
