1.
Victor/Marcus/Jaco etc...: 'how?' Flea/Stu Zender etc... : 'why?'
LOL
  2. I saw this question asked on the Vintage Guitar and Bass forum and I thought it was an interesting one but it got very little response. I figured you chaps would be more responsive. If you could ask one question to any bass player, past or present, alive or dead, what would it be? I would love to be able to ask Allen Woody about the setup he used on the Epiphone sig series bass prototype and weather he felt the mass produced instrument was close enough to the vision he had for it.
  3. Anything that Dream theatre did from the Metallica catalogue. Makes it palatable for my ears. Or The Beatles song 'She said, She said' by Govt Mule Elenor Rigby done by Zoot is absolutely kick 4rse.
  4. Bass 1st, guitar 2nd, drums 3rd then its a slow decline into less than average vocals (enough to be able to write and record as an outline for a real singer) and the same with piano, I'm crap at it but can play enough for them to get the idea. I also have a Mandolin/banjo which seem fairly easy to play. Though not seriously.
  5.
Why does this whole thread make me think, the phrase "Who cares, some of you need to get out more"? Its just an instrument....an object. There are bigger things occurring in the world.
+1 who the hell cares if some missguided shop owner in Catford thinks that its OK to potentialy damage his business by letting some of his staff purchase and trash a bass. Then post it on the tube. Alternatively, is this a case of any publicity is good publicity? erm....... I would guess this is an exception to that rule. Now if it was a Shuker?

  8.
man BS sucked after Ozzy left cool rig though and yes, he is a under-rated player
Hmm, I would have to disagree. IMHO the first 2 post Ozzy albums were great. Heaven and Hell, and Mob Rules had Dio on vocals, Vinnie Appice on drums and a whole swag of great tunes. It was after these 2 that I felt BS started to lose it.
  9.
Absolutely excellent bass for the money....
I kid you not, the neck on the one I tried was as perfect a reproduction from the nut down to my 72 Jazz neck that if my Jazz was ever stolen I would probably buy one of these Corts just for the neck. Is the one in the pic a laminated or one piece finbass?
  10.
So guys!!! what happened?
+1
  11.
I think that corts actually quite nice looking. Agree with you tho, definately very nice and easy to play. Theyre a good name in my books
its OK looking but the one I tried had a very poorly matched veneer on the front and back, not sure what the wood in the middle was but it was a messy look all the same. The other thing is that most of the Corts I've ever tried were those Bundled cheapies so I never rated them as better than a begginers instrument
  12. Cort GB74 OPN E-Bass Figured it was just an early 70's Jazz bass clone but was totally impressed by its quality, playability and sound.
  13. The days of doing door deals @ $10 a head to 500-1000 people and having a total overhead cost of $1000 are long gone here. These days bands are lucky to get 100 - 150 people even with free entry. That said, we have a rule that our base rate is $600. If they want to talk us down or start mucking about with other forms of payment we just walk away full stop no further discussion. This helps other bands get better rates and always means that we get a decent fee. I'm coming up for my 900th show sometime early next year and I can honestly say I've never been in a band where the show was cancelled on the night. Usually its the opposite. ie today I had a phone call from our guit4ri5t to say that one of our regular venues wants us there tomorrow night. This happens about 4 or 5 times a year I would say. We dont use contracts these days and if we do get any kind of payment issues then we sort it out on the night and 1. refuse any further gigs there or 2. make it clear what the conditions are for next time. Seems to work OK for us.

nice list Bryce. I mostly agree with you regarding the Euro amp/Euro valve, US amp/US tube comment. I guess the amp manufacturers used to buy local valves when developing their amps so I suppose this makes sense. I gotta say though that I've tried a lot of Euro valves that sound very nice in Ampeg gear. I've no experience with Mesas, Fenders etc so dont really know here. I have tried quite a few different Mullards in Ampeg stuff and while rich sounding I awlawys found them a bit muddy around the low mids. Same tubes in a Marshall Guit amp and they sounded awsome. As you say its all subjective.
  15. Unfortunately guitarists dont have the monopoly on egomanic arrogance. On the unfortunate ocasions when you come across them I have to agree with ARGH. Experience tells me that a gentle reminder that its supposed to be a team effort can sometimes work a treat. Once worked with a young very talented guitarist who figured "his" rythym section didnt know how to listen to him" (end quote) and left and setup another band of the same ilk. After the other guys got fed up with his attitude issue and booted him out he politely asked to return to an amazingly in touch band with his adjusted attitude. Seemed the lesson was all that was needed and he is now a respected player.
  16. Cool, one of my students is from Sligo, now living here in the Adelaide Hills
  17. Is this Sligo in Ireland we are talking about here?
  18.
Either... Im just as good with each.
Ahh the modesty of it all. Good to see you back ARGH I'm mostly a fingers player but I'm learning to use a pick after 29 years of playing, after I made a list last year of my 10 favourite players and realised that 8 were pick players. The Allen Woody Rumblekat does suit a pick I gotta say.
  19. That whole scenario sucks Chris but as others have said, full credit to you for taking the financial (and moral) responsibility.
  20.
I think its amazing that this post has gone from a guy playing bass, to snobbery about his "lack of flow", to the reasoning about why Britain is poop. Is it me, or has this got a bit too serious? I think the guy's cool for being able to do what he can do, and not being afraid to share it. And when it comes to "playing faces", i apparantly don the stare of the keyboard player from Sparks.
in the best tradition of Bill Wyman I apparently become totaly deadpan. Even though I do like to move around a lot (when possible) when playing.
  21.
Anything by 80s hairbands.
Closest comment I would agree with yet. Although if Whitesnake get bundled in with the other hair bands then Neil Murray needs an excemption from prosecution. Great player.
  22. OK in an update for any Australian or Kiwi forum members I recieved the following email from bassguitarstrings.us after ordering some strings from them: Hello Bret, This is just a note to let you know that we've given you a $10 rebate on your order (which shipped today) so that the total charge is $26.94 and not $36.94. We charge a flat fee of $16.95 for international shipments. Your package cost much less to ship, hence the adjustment. US$26.94 is Aus$31.30 This is super cheap for a brand name set of strings here in Adelaide (or even Sydney for that matter). Full credit to you bassguitarstrings.us for honesty and thanks!
  23. These guys seem cheaper than just strings et al. http://bassguitarstrings.us/store/home.php I recently bought a set of Short scale Ken Smith (GHS) roundwounds for my Epi Rumblekat and they were cheap (US$16 a set) and the real deal. To Australia they charged US$16. Just strings and Bass emporium were trying to charge US$35 for shipping. Quite ridiculous.
  24. When a bass passes from being valued on its practical application, to being priced on its value to a collector IMHO it no longer has any relevence to me or my playing, except maybe in an historical interest sense. It becomes an object that was once a nice bass. Kinda like an Aston Martin DB6. They look great in a motor show but I'm never gonna get to drive one and my BMW is still a lovely car to drive.
  25.

Slather, slather, drool drool......... me/ looks at Dans Powersoft 2004 in actual GAS pain. My Rack is now : Ampeg SVP-PRO TC Electronic 1140 - filling a spare rack space as a backup pre ElectroVoice XEQ-3 Active crossover Perreaux 5000B Power amp (2 x 500w) @ 4 Ohms I used to use a DigiTech Studio 400 in it as well but these days I love having a straight tube pre sound, nothing else.
