Again, I agree, to a degree. If £5.5k (Rick 4005xc) was a reasonable recompense for the labour and materials involved then why don't all their guitars and basses start at that price. They obviously feel £2.5k is fair for a 4003 so why double it for the 4005, unless cashing in on the vintage values, which they're entitled to, it's theirs after all.

I agree that as an investment it might be a shrewd purchase, going on current original 4005 prices. But as an instrument I'm not sure it's worth double the price of a 4003, which is arguably a better instrument, although that's obviously subjective. I adore the 4005 but it's definitely a flawed design. The differences on the new xc might improve on these, but they might also impact on it's future value as it's not like the vintage 4005. Only time will tell I suppose.

Apologies if it came across as a dig, it wasn't intended that way, and I hope I'm not one of the "certain folk" you refer to as I try not get into debates. I've probably quoted the wrong reply really as my post was more in reply to the quote below and was just pointing out that it definitely exists in many industries. Back to bass prices. 🙂👍

You might not want to buy these things but plenty do. The relic thing happens everywhere including the motor industry. 'Rat Look' is most definitely a thing, along with 'Shabby Chic' furniture, distressed look clothing, vintage look garden accessories, the list goes on. In most fields of retail there will be a vintage, worn in version available to those that do want it. For those that don't I assume it's as simple as not buying it.

For me at the moment the new Rickenbacker 4005xc is heading the 'not worth it' group, in fact it's an absolute pee take. The original 4005s do sell for ludicrous money, we're talking between 8 and 10 grand roughly, and Rickenbacker have finally caved in to requests to remake it. But they've made something which is different to a 4005, which is fair enough, but I think their pricing is a desperate attempt to ride the coat tails of the crazy vintage 4005 market. Following on from stadium concerts heard far away I heard The Who's 'The Who Roar In' concert at Wembley from my grandparents garden near Brent Reservoir when I stayed in the summer holidays. The line up was Nils Lofgren, AC/DC, The Stranglers and The Who. I was only six at the time so didn't know who I was listening to but I knew it must be something really cool to be able to hear it clearly from the garden. I shouldn't have been up that late but I pestered my nan and she caved in as all grandparents are supposed to. 😁

Excellent album, so much more than just acoustic versions of their songs.

The Cure's live album, Entreat, is perfection as far as a live album goes. All the tracks are from their Disintegration album, but every single one is elevated above the studio version. IMO this album contains the best version of Disintegration ever recorded. Other favorite live albums I have to be in the mood for but I'll happily indulge in Entreat at any time.

That's a good point @casapete , there's good loud and bad loud. I've been to plenty of gigs that weren't the loudest, but were more painful because of the terrible quality, I'm looking at you Plymouth Pavilions. When I've seen Motorhead towards the end, it was the strobes during overkill that hurt more than the volume, absolutely blinding and relentless. Relentless, blinding lights and ear splitting volume on a song called Overkill, it could only be Motorhead couldn't it. 😆

Oddly it's not the ones you'd expect that I've found the loudest. Fun Lovin' Criminals have been ear bleeding loud every time I've seen them. Likewise Carter USM usually reassembled my insides, but I did used to spend most of the gigs upside down with my feet in the air. Sultans of Ping made up for ability with volume (and gold spandex). The loudest I think though were the Manics when they were still a four piece touring Generation Terrorists, in a small hall with stage about a foot high. Ah, fun times. What? Fun times. Eh? FUN TI.... oh never mind.

I'd better reply as I think it was my comment that inspired this thread. Early 90s I think, we went to see Whitesnake with Pride & Glory supporting. I mainly wanted see P&G, being a big Ozzy fan previously, as it was Zakk Wylde's band. Once at the gig we found out P&G had pulled out, bummer but nevermind, it's still Whitesnake it so should be good. About fifteen minutes in there was a lengthy guitar solo, hmm no need for all that fretwankery. Following that, God no please don't, too late, bass solo. Oh how it dragged on, rumbling, indiscernable noise. Anyway it finally ended and I thought great, let's hear some songs, just as the bass drum started thumping. In a Dorothy-esque "There's no place like home, there's no place like home", I clicked my Ruby DMs together and quietly whispered, "Please let a song start, please let a song start". Nope, into the bass drum came some tom fills, then the snare rolls, then the full kit, on and on and on. Please make it stop. It didn't, not for very long time. So we all walked and went clubbing instead.

Flippin' sacrilege. You'll be telling me you were responsible for the removal of raisins from Double Deckers next! 😉

I can only think of Mark & Lard when I see that name, so I'll add 'Frank Spencer Blues Explosion' to the list. 😂

I think this is getting way off topic but I do wonder how much of an endorsement deal is just a business transaction and the endorsee just has to use a certain item a few times at high profile gigs to get the brand out there. But soon go back to their preferred items. The drummer concerned was a Vic Firth endorsee but the factory printed signature just seemed a tad crass. It matters not as I gave the sticks to our drummer and pocketed the wedge of cash I extracted from the other drummer. The printed signature of the chief cashier of The Bank of England on the was far more acceptable. 😁

That's the point though, they weren't that desirable. Maybe if they were hand signed rather than printed, but they where still just sticks that somebody famous had never used, so just sticks.
