Just a thought. When Fender changed to the 3 bolt/micro tilt necks for their strats, jazz basses and telecaster customs; why didn't they change precision basses? Just something which has puzzled me tonight. Was there ever an answer?
As I remember, Deluxe teles come with a carved heel with a micro-tilt, so they are those odd rounded 4 bolt ones. No idea though.

6 strings, yes, the BAD kind of 6 strings, not the bass kind So during my little break at my uncle's, he was impressed with my knowledge of guitars and basses (probably because his knowledge is practically zero) and declared that he had an old electric guitar that he bought in the 80's, and told me to take it, because he's not an electric guitar play (just acoustic), and I could fix it up and get it going again. It had been siting in his garage for a long time, probably since he moved in to that house in 2001. So he went out, and produced me with this- This picture gives you not much idea of the condition that this guitar is in. Basically, it's a Satellite Les Paul copy, presumably made in Japan in the 80's. The body is made from plywood, and I have no idea what the neck is made from, because it is painted. The finish on the body has sunk into the grain of the wood, and the scratchplate is cracked where it's screwed on. The output jack is missing, but the electrics all look pretty intact apart from that. A screw on the top strap button needs replaced. Apart form that, everything there is pretty OK, the bridge and tailpiece work alright, the "hum buckers" are the typical single coils in a humbucker casing job, but not to worry, I quite prefer single coils Oh yeah, the little knob is missing from the pickup selector too The neck is straight, and not warped or bowed, but it does look like the fretboard has swollen up a bit, so i'm keeping it my room to see if it dries out a little. It was covered in dust, which I promptly cleaned off, to find the fretboard looks alright. some of the frets needs recrowned, but that's the worst it gets there really. I would like to replace all the tuners with some decent ones. All being well, I could have a decent little guitar for not a lot of money. My dad was telling me that T-cut might bring the finish up if it's not cellulose. So i'm going to get the T-cut out and see if it will polish up. More photos and info to follow at a later date

Watched D'Addario's own half-round review earlier, and the guy had an amazing amount of treble on. Why? He had half rounds on... Surely that negates the purpose of the half rounds, if he's just going to dial out all the bass and boost the treble. It sounded horrible. too tinny and trebly.
thats because they spend 99% of their mental effort focussing on how they can crank their volume so they can get their tone
f*** "Their" tone, I'll crank my bass knob and deafen them with the low end!
Vox have a seriously distinctive tone to their amps, that'll happen, and most guitarists use fairly standard roundwound strings (if we're still claiming strings make a difference. Old AC15s are very lovely, and make "that" noise. It is good.
Yes, that's the point. Strings do a make a difference. So does the amp, but strings will make a big difference too, lots of guitarists just don't think like that though.
Interesting comment, this. I was at a party/gig last week when numerous guitarists got up and played through an old Vox AC15 amp. I heard a Les Paul, three Strats (US and Japanese), a Squier Tele, a ladida PRS and a Steinberger headless played through the Vox - yes there were differences but the tones I heard were very similar - strange that.
Yes, and they likely all had the same or similar strings on... Ernie Balls or D'Addario nickel plated or something similarly standard.
Then the band should be called 'Monkey McMonkey & The Chunky Spunkers'. See? That doesn't use the 'F'-word.
Oh dear, what have I created?

In my opinion, the electronic components are the most important part of an electric bass or guitar, after strings, in shaping the tone of it. I've upgraded pots on basses in the past, and it does definitely make a difference, not a huge amount, but it's noticeable. I usually put in 500k pots, so that will change the sound too if there are 250k pots in it, as 500k pots make it sound a little brighter. I think it's difficult to get good pickups on a cheaper instrument, so upgrading those is probably a good choice. Best thing to do for a good sound though is find the strings that make the sound you want!
you are discussing the wrong point. It's not whether 15" or 18" can produce enough treble... the question is... who is going to carry my cabs??? The 2x 15" I tried might as well have been part of Stonehenge!
Get rich and famous, then get some poor sod to lug them about for you. Or do that now.
well, I got curious and checked them... I like it!
Yay! I bought my SWR off their bassist.
My vote goes to "The Big Nasty".
There's a local band here called the Big Grizzly. 3 hairy men obsessed with the worst sound they can get from their gear and their mascot, which is a dildo.

I know you can get 15"s that are perfectly capable of producing top end, but mine weren't. Mine were incredibly bassy, boomy and great at moving air, but not great for any higher register definition.
No, we only established that if you have monkeys, you get more points
Ah, ok! Monkey funk simulator 2013! Ah, wait, that's the name of the game i'm creating ©MiltonCorp2013.
any band with monkeys in their name or logo earns extra points, for me...
Yes! It's settled then, your new band is called The Funk Brass Monkeys
I'm not saying he is right in anything. But I would personally like to try 18" cabs, if I had someone carrying my stuff. I was surprised at how good a 2x15" cab sounded, and how powerful, with just a 150W amp. I imagine 18" speakers will not be very efficient, even less than your typical 15" ones, but I'm curious.
I ran my Ashdown 400 watt head through a couple of 4ohm 15" cabs a couple of times, and it had loads of volume and movement of air, and house-shakingly bassy, but there was absolutely no clarity to the higher notes. The speakers weren't the best you could buy, and the cab was home made out of MDF, so all in all, probably not great for what i was using it for, but if you had a decent neo 15" and a good cabinet, and pair that with a 4x10, it would probably sound rocking! I have no idea how an 18" would sound, but it was the idiocy of the guys argument. He liked distortion because it cuts the low end, but he also wanted to use 18" speakers... How stupid can one person be?
