1.
You have to use the right type as there are many different versions of Rockwool with different unit masses. Studio Spares recommend the RW3 variety as offering the best compromise of weight cost and noise attenuation. The main use of Rockwool and similar materials is no so much sound insulation, but more to do with filling up the spaces in stud walls that would otherwise be producing nasty resonances. It will have little effect on bass frequencies, and the only way the really tackle these is with lots of mass (solid walls, many layers of plasterboard) and decoupling the extra mass you add to the walls ceiling and floor from each other and from the original structure.
Yes. It's not really designed for sound insulation, just heat insulation, but because of the design of it, it gives some sound protect, as BRX said, it will stop all the air inside the cavities rattling around, which i'm sure would get annoying. It's messy stuff to put in though. I used to put a jumper on before putting it in, then take it off when finished. It's less irritating that way, because not as much of it gets in touch with your skin.
 2. BAH! Foiled again by the revived thread! CURSES!
 3.
Apologies if this has been covered before, but what's the general experience with ordering stuff from Thomann in Germany?
Never had a single issue with them. Bought a couple of things from them. You need to wait a while for them coming (usually around 4/5 days) but other than the unavoidable delivery time, very good. Although, as with everything, support your local if possible.
 4.
+1. The OP now knows where to come for proper feedback. That's useful, isn't it?
Yes, now I know too!
 5. You've got input from a lot of people here with more experience than me, and you should probably listen to that, but here's what I think. The vocals are a bit cliche. I've said this for quite a while. All women seem to want to sing like that, and personally, i've never found it appealing, so maybe that's just me, but she definitely can sing, there's no doubt about that, although I think I heard a few flat notes, so that's something to work on. The backing vocals just didn't do it for me. I can't put my finger on it, but they just seem a little lacklustre. Like's been said, the lyrics are a little corny, maybe something I would expect from a musical, or worship group. Something odd happens when the drums come in, everything dies for a second. Not meaning to be rude, but the track does put me in mind of a worship band. I do like the simplicity of it, but everything seems to familiar, nearly to the point of over-familiarity. That's my views on it my own personal opinion. It's quite harsh, but don't be discouraged. The fact alone that you have written and recorded a song is something to be proud of, and if you're happy with the arrangement and how things are, that's cool, put it out there, but you can probably expect people to have these criticisms then too, and they might be far ruder about it. Like I said, if that's how you want it to sound, that's cool, and it's ultimately your choice what you do here, but i'm giving you feedback from an amateur musicians point of view. Take it or leave it Good luck with it, and you'll post up another link of it if you make any changes, won't you?
 6.
You scream. I scream. We all scream for ice cream! More pics as soon as I get 'em... promise.
YAAAAAY! ICE CREAM... I mean, eh, PICTURES!
 7.
I'm at the stage where I don't want to imitate someone elses sound but I don't quite have 'me' nailed down yet. Actually just thinking.. how does someone know when they've found their sound? Is it the one you go back to, like your very own default?
Just whatever you play, that's you.
 8.
Most people's idols are mega stars, mine is a French kid who just rocks the f*** out of his bedroom. So cool still.
David Carricacio! (may have spelt his second name wrong). I think that's a fairly old cover. I think he's doing pretty well for himself now. He's a Sandberg endorsee, and he does his covers in a room full of all these cool basses. Check out his "Hit me with your rhythm stick cover". He's an awesome bassist.
 9.
I thought this was going to be a thread about how 'better' gear really doesn't make you any better. But you have a point as well...
That's a good point to, but fairly obvious, wouldn't you think?
 10.
So, that theory is disproved neatly and quickly.
Why are you turning this into an argument? Honestly, there's no need. Discussion, yes, argument, no.
 11.
1 It sounds good 2 You'll learn from it 3 Entertainment 4 etc.
I've learned from it, and been entertained, and now i'm doing more of my own thing.
I would have liked his work much more.
But I'll bet he didn't paint for you. Especially since...
There's no point to art, other than itself.

Nothing ever holds merit merely and only because someone expressed it 'in their own thing'.
Oh, go back to bed and come back when you're in a better mood.
 12.
I totally agree with you on that, I'm just saying that if you try to listen for a gap in bass playing that has never been done before, you'll struggle to hear one, as your post suggests , your own sound will happen naturally, you can't force it, therefore to me there is no point in trying to set yourself apart from others .
There's no point to art, other than itself.
 13.
Maybe, but that's not my experience of myself or of most other musicians I've played with. And when they did go on about 'expressing themselves' it was sometimes because they couldn't play very well and it was being used as an excuse for not doing what was actually needed thus tempting one to say stop [s]w***ing[/s] expressing yourself and play the song - and this applies to so-called original material as much as any so-called cover. Anyone can simply express themselves and they may well be content to do so. But there may be something wrong here - it may be very poor. But if they are happy doing it, then what could be better, at least they have their own 'voice' - whatever that is. Anyway, I've got nothing against people expressing themselves as such. However, I don't accept that's it's the be all and end all.
Ok, well I never claimed it really was the be all and end all. I did say that I had the realisation and confidence in my ability now to play what I want to play, and not try and sound like somebody else, and I imagine that is something a lot of bassists on here will have had, or will have at some point. If you are playing with somebody and you don't like the way they are expressing themselves, you are playing with the wrong people!
 14.
Not sure how many bass players there are, have been, or will be, but I'm pretty sure there is no enough variation for everyone to have a distinguishable individual feel and tone. Whilst I have enjoyed creating songs and lines and gigging them, and I'm not saying it's not about art or expression, but bass playing to me is about being solid, in timing and dynamic, supporting, driving the song when needed.
No 2 people ever think the same thing. They might have the general idea, but the way they frame that idea and spin it is different from person to person. And that is very much why no 2 bass players ever will sound the same. I'll never hear what Flea hears, and I'll never hear what any of you hear. I can only hear what I hear, so that is what I will play.
In keeping with everything in life, if you continually try to be something that you are not you will be unsuccessful....or ultimately unhappy.
Yes, quite true.
 15.
I don't see why it's so important to sound like yourself - unless you live in a me me me kind of individualistic egoistic society and subscribe to those values.
What's the point in having an artistic outlet and sounding like somebody else? Maybe Van Gogh could have painted like Da Vinci, but what would have been the point? It certainly doesn't hold as much merit as being able to express your thoughts and feelings in your own thing. It's not about being self absorbed, it's about playing like yourself.
 16.
Everyone (famous and iconic musicians included) starts out imitating someone else or their music. The trick is to utilise what you have learned from this, and make it your own.
Bingo.
 17.
I've gone full circle, been in a gigging originals band etc, but now to the dislike of alot of basschaters ,I just play covers, and get real pleasure out of trying to recreate exact lines and sounds as closely as I can. Maybe one day I'll go all original and inventive again (at least IMO anyway) Your right though, you shouldn't feel you have to do anything like anyone else (that doesn't rule out learning from them )
Learning peoples lines is the best (and arguably the only) way to learn.
 18. They say you should never meet your heroes, because you'll be disappointed and disillusioned, but you were obviously lucky enough to pick a hero that's well grounded, and not someone like Flea, who's bound to be a bit of a diva. Lucky you!
 19.
I don't know man, Funk just seems to be the thing that I naturally lean towards. Thanks for your advice though!
I don't think he was being entirely serious There's plenty of funk lovers on here And you'll know the serious comments when you see them
 20. When we all start out, on any instrument, presumably all of us had some inspiration from another musician, whether they be very famous (Flea of Red Hot Chili Peppers is my own personal inspiration) or maybe not famous, maybe just a friend or family member. When we start playing, we can't wait to start playing the songs our idols play, then we can't wait to have their sound, we can't wait to take what they have done, and make it our own, by improvising around the general idea, and that is how things go for must of us I assume, certainly me anyway. But what I realised a few hours ago after a few while improvising is that I don't need to sound like Flea. I don't need to sound like John McVie. I don't need to sound like Lemmy. I don't need to sound like anybody. Can I make a "Flea" bassline? Probably, but why bother? The man is still alive. The man is still writing music, and even if he dies today, he's created a legacy, any of which I couldn't even hope to tap into whatever went on in his mind to lead him to create some of the great basslines that he has made in the past. But this is not what lead me to realise that I don't need to sound like anybody. i simply realised that I have the capacity to play things in my own distinct way, which is the real goal I suppose. I can listen to a beat, and let a groove form, and not have it sound like another persons groove. I've heard it said many times by musicians "It's important to sound like yourself", and I think I've finally reached the point where I realise the importance of it, and have the confidence to take it seriously, and continue to develop what I sound like. And that is (presumably) what all musicians realise, sooner or later
 21.
I just told it like it is to a fledgling songwriter soliciting opinion on his song in another thread. I was pretty critical but (I thought) encouraging. I copped a couple of slaps in the face by two other members. I feel sh*t now so I won't be doing that again.
I was at an improv class earlier, and after each jam, we were told to give a positive and negative of each others playing. The positive makes you feel good, and the negative makes you focus on improving that. None of us took it personally. Some people gave positives, and they were kind of shot down for being untrue, so then a negative of that person was that they weren't listening enough to other people. Then we had more jams and got better. There were also other things discussed and done that helped us improve.
 22.
...or in Essex... 'Them what can, do; them what can't, teach, innit...'
Still wrong. It probably goes more like "Them what can do, do; Them that can't do, teach, innit bruv!"
 23.
Have done. Hence 'informed opinion' which is the thing people have a right to. No-one has the right to be ignorant.
Everyone has the right to be ignorant, nobody should have the desire to, though. I don't think I really am, though. Look, we'll probably never agree on this, and it will just descend into a more insulting discussion with time, so like with White Cloud, I'll agree to disagree, and call it a day on this one.
 24.
The first to options are kind of suggestions of ways to go if you have a problem with falling under the third.
You have an opinion on this, so does that mean that you also need to build a few dozen instruments to validate your opinion? As for "Why the change of heart?". I realised that there was more to do with the pickup in a solid bodied electric instrument than the woods it is made from. A good instrument with a crappy pickup is a crappy instrument. As for the speed of the shift, well, i've been at this for 2 years, if my opinions have changed in that time (and a lot of them have) it will be seen as a rapid change.
 25.
Maybe it was studying under an experienced luthier, and making a few dozen instruments. Or using first engineering principles and an understanding of resonance both acoustic and electronic to draw conclusions based on observation. Or maybe it was not having the first clue either way, but posting anyway.
That's a bit presumptuous, and I don't appreciate the insinuation that I don't have the first clue about instruments. You are the most impossible person I have ever met. It's nearly like you pick arguments for fun.
