1.
Maybe they were out of phase then. It would sound like the bass fighting itself if you know what I mean. Kinda thin and distant.
Ah right... i might need to think about this then a little bit more.
 2.
Turn the pickup upside down? They may be alright anyway. If they sound alright then that's all that matters.
But being out of phase would just mean they sound slightly out of phase? it sounded like that already.
 3.
Pickups are never 'reverse wound'. They just use opposite ends of the coil as the hot wire. The pickups are actually probably out of phase now, in that the magnet poles are the same way up. Both north up for instance. Get a compass and check the polarity. The pickups need to have opposite polarity. One north up and the other south up.
Ah right, cheers for that! Is there any way to correct the polarity, like switching what lead i have connected to the first pickup?
 4. So yeah, i've just got my OLP (Which shall be known as a MiltyMan from now on) all wired up and screwed together. So since my jazz bass was sitting in several bits already, i decided while i was at it, i'll stick some new pots on (500k CTS, instead of the 250k unbranded ones that came with it)... and then i also decided to wire it in series. It's wired and all. But the pot change was awkward, more on that in a little minute. Have any of you ever wired you jazz bass in series? what do you think? Oh sh*t, i just thought... one of the pickups is reverse wound, isn't it? will that affect things? Anyway, the pots. It turns out that the control plate had mini pots (GRRR)... and the pots that i had were regular sized ones. Ah well, they should still fit in the cavity. So i tore on. Took off the old volume pots, wire the - and + together, put the new pots on and... they didn't fit in the holes of the original pots. I drilled them out. Top job. Screwed the pots in, and once again, the control knobs didn't fit! Why do you do this to me, God, why!? Anyway, here's what i'm thinking now- since the control plate is all scratched up anyway, i want to put a black one on. Not just black... MATTE black And of course that then means that ALL the hardware has to be matte black (including the pick guard), so now this has gone from a simple upgrade, to a full blown project. I should also be getting another neck for it soon. This bass will be the epitome of cool when it's done, just wait
 5. YUP, IT WORKS! Wow, it's good. Wired in series, no coil switch. No neck pickup getting in the way. Set of pro steels for that ZING! Marvellous. Need to wheel the amp out some night when nobody is around and give it a good blast!
 6. Jazz foam. For for jazz... pickups. Bought a set of this stuff from Richard, and shoved it in my bass immediately. 100 times better than the old foam that was in it. A small thing, but a big difference. Richard's price was good, the stuff arrived here within 2 days of sending payment. Deal with confidence, chatters! Cheers.
 7. It's good foam this. Exactly the right size, and a bit stiffer than most foam. Still lets your pickup move up and down a bit, but if you really hammer at the strings like me, you don't want the foam to be too spongey. This stuff is perfect! Cheers Richard!
 8.
What about the 7 minutes with 'Trane, though..? Surely that was worth it..?
Didn't even bother to watch it.
 9. I can't believe i have just spent the last hour and a half reading this thread. There's 90 minutes i have nothing to show for. Any song off the album "The will to death" by John Frusciante does it for me.
 10.
Have you got it sorted with the MM pickup then Milty?
Just going to the music shop for a few parts then i'll be able to test it properly.
 11. DUH MILTON! I just thought about how it was wired... yup, 'twas a very stupid question
 12. This might just be a stupid thing to think, but if i wired the + and - of the 2 pickups in my jazz bass, would it still work with the separate vol controls? Maybe that's just the crazy talking...
 13.
Here is my first attempt at this. I should have put audio fade in and out whilst the audio was still in logic, as I could not figure out how to do it along wiht the video in imovie. Video was shot using the Macbook Pro in built camera. Thanks Milton for the pointers.
Great tone! Love it. You fade the audio by hovering over the audio part below a clip, and 2 little tabs will appear at either end of the audio file, in the top corners. Just drag them in a bit. Alternatively, you can click the little gear, and go in to clip adjustments, and you can select the length of the fade there. Good job! I use my built in camera for my videos too. But i'm going to get a little hand held camera soon hopefully.
 14.
What do you wish you could be brilliant at?
Everything. The ones that i have planned for the future- Lead guitar, drums and keyboard. After that, i might look into synth programming and stuff, trumpet, maybe some wood wind. Beyond that, it's hard to say.
 15.
Well despite the lack of "Thmgs that kids say" this thread has had me in stitches for so early in the morning (Not that I am mocking your dreadful relationship Discreet... You are such a lovely bloke... And well you are obviously a tosser for messing yourself around!) Anyhow.... I came on this thread with a purpose. A work friend told me a hilarious story yesterday, she had her Grandaughter (3) overnight on Saturday so her son and daughter in law could have a few drinks at the rugby... On the Sunday, she took her to her friends house for Sunday dinner before taking her home to her parents. The conversation went something like this..... "So what do you like doing?" friends friend to Grandaughter "I like looking after my chickens, I love them" Grandaughter Panicked look from friends friend to my friend... Whispers "Oh no, I've made a chicken dinner for lunch" Grandaughter... Whispers back "It's OK I like eating them too"
HAHA! One of my sister's uni friends has a young boy. And i can't remember exactly why, but she was really stressed and panicking over something, and the little lad came running up to her and said "Mummy, it's alright, the most important thing to remember is... always put your trousers on before your shoes".
 16.
Do you have a multimeter? That way you don't have to guess and you will know which wire is which, from the pickup.
No but as you will see, i have it nearly sorted!
 17.
Nope, only really interested in trading it sorry
You have to state a value though. Forum rules.
 18.
Sounds about right.
Great!
 19.
For parallel? Yes.
Oh no sorry, I mean green and white soldered together, red to vol pot red, black to earth, along with the earth wire. That's series then, yes?
 20.
You have 2 wires coming from each coil. A hot wire (+) and the earth (-). To wire a pickup in series to make it humcancelling You attach the + from one coil to the - of the other. Usually Red and white are hot, green and black are earth. red/black is one coil, green and white is t'other. Red and green go together, white is your output and black is the earth. Attach the earth (black) to the braid and screening. White to the vol and earth to the back of the vol. The back of the vol pot also should be attached to your screening. The earth of the output jack goes to the screening also to create the circuit. and obviously the output from the vol pot goes to your preamp and the output from the preamp goes to the centre of your jack. If at this point your bass is picking up interference and humming you just switch one set of wires round. A multimeter helps to identify each set of coil wires.
Great, thanks! So you reckon i should wire the green and black together, and tape them off, then wire the red and white on to the red wire coming from the volume pot, and then just solder the thick black to the bare of the volume pot wire? That will be it in series then, and should be wired, correctly, yes? I had it wired red/white, and it seemed to work, but when i turned the volume down, it only turned it down for one coil, but that was probably because the black and green were going to earth. It sounds like it should work this way! I'm going to get a new battery!
 21.
Well, some hum does not pass a QC test in my view. But if you're happy that the preamp is fine then the issue is the pickup. If there's no sound with the current wiring configuration, try swapping one from each pair over, e.g. the black and white just to make sure we're not just shorting the pickup out... So White&Red + / Green&Black -
Alright, cheers!
 22.
Doesn't work as in no output from the bass? Just check the switch is actually earthed - i.e. connected in some way to the volume pot screening. If it still doesn;t work we need to work out which part of the signal path is at fault. Try connecting the Red&Black to the tip of the output socket and the Green&White to the sleeve of the output socket (i.e. bypass the preamp). Do you get any sound form the jack? If you do, then its probably the preamp that needs looking at If not, its the pickup (or the jack lead - rule out the jack lead first)
The jack lead is fine. The preamp is also fine. I turned the bass pot up, and it hummed more, and went away when i turned it down. Seems normal to me. What happened, which i found odd, was when it was on, the pickup didn't make any noise when tapped with a screwdriver, but the magnetism of the top coil was significantly reduced when on. I thought it was just something i hadn't noticed before, but it went back to normal when i turned it off. Could be the battery though... i doubt that though, if the bass EQ worked.
 23.
I thought the switch was being bypassed completely. It depends on which wires you use from the pickup. The SD diagram you had should be a good reference. For a humbucker you need to wire the two in series, but out of phase. But you don't need to worry about this. Just connect: Red & Black wire to the white part of the red wire that goes to the volume pot. Then connect: Green & White (+screen) to the braided part of the red wire that goes to the volume pot. Forget the switch if you're not using it.
That is EXATCLY what i did (except using the switch to earth)... it doesn't work.
 24.
The red wire that connects to the volume pot seems to lead to the switch, the green wire on the vol pot goes to the preamp. So I would say that if you're bypassing the switch, the red vol pot wire should be replaced with the HOT from the pickup. The COLD and EARTH from the pickup can just go to the vol pot casing.
That would mean it was wired in series?
 25.
Lost to us on this day two years ago.....always will be a legend!!
I worked for a joinery firm this time 2 years ago, and jumped into one of the guys cars in the morning, and he picked up his paper and just shouted "f*** me lads.... Gary Moore is dead!"... I already knew, but being a bit ignorant of music back then, didn't know who he was.
