1.
Bump Any further suggestions on this? I'm not getting any response out of local luthiers i am trying to contact... Sadly i don't have access to any of the equipment to test the preamp/pickups and not really willing to invest.
Isn't distortion kind of what EMG's are known for/supposed to do? If we think about where the P pickup is in relation to the J pickup, it's easy to say that the magnetic field will be disturbed more (creating a higher output) because the string will have more space to move at that point, than at the bridge. Maybe that's what's causing the slight distortion. It also probably wouldn't happen with passive pickups.
 2.
Is that because they've got velcro on them?
No, they are highly collectable. They are early versions. Not many about now.
 3.
Sure fire route to bankruptcy if there is no profit margin! The Gallery has London rental/rates costs plus the cost of holding many hundreds of thousands of pounds worth of inventory let alone the salaries of the staff. If they only ever price matched high volume web retailers (without these costs and with economies of scale) they would soon be in difficulties I suspect. Clearly they make money on items that cannot be price matched (eg, second hand basses or Martin's Sei basses) but even so. Regarding Luke/Karlfer's comments, maybe they should remove the explicit price matching advertising and only conduct this verbally on items on whic there will still be margin involved? But thats their decision
Well, obviously i doesn't always apply. I bought £80 worth of price matched strings from my local. I'm sure the store made a healthy profit from them, and i got a good deal (the strings were expensive). But if you are making a mere £20 or £30 on a £1000 bass, obviously that's taking it a bit too literally.
 4.
........ any of them lefties?
Just a couple. Wasn't planning on letting them go though...
 5.
Hello! I can introduce myself as a new bass player, bass being my first proper musical instrument. I decided to purchase a bass after mulling the idea of getting an electric guitar. So there I was standing in the shop with a Les Paul Studio but things just didn't feel right.I walked around and looked at those 'huge' guitars with four strings. I sat down and held a Fender Jazz bass..PERFECT...PURCHASED...and here I am 8 months later learning to play! SO far I have dinged my bass, swapped out the innards for a J-Retro(which I removed promptly) and replaced the nut by myself.Currently I am working on composing and recording some of my own music. I am looking forward to gaining more knowledge and conversing with fellow bass players on this forum.
Welcome! Ah great! 8 months- I remember when i was at that stage. I was still pretty crap (still am at the 2 year mark). But anyhow, i have a feeling you might be better than i was at 8 months... I wasn't ambitious enough to replace nuts or preamps at that stage. Fender Jazz basses are great. I have one. There's plenty of info on here, and if you can't find what you need, just start a new thread, and usually somebody has the info you're looking for!
 6.
Hi small independent shop, one of your products was bought en mass by a major chain store competitor so they can offer it cheaper, and they've had their stock for ages to slashed the prices to try and shift it.... will you match that price by lopping off 30% off the price (ie your profit) for me? - no, you don't have any in stock, oh poor show
I missed this before. The music shop i use has price matched for me on strings against strings direct, just based on that it's money in his tills rather than somebody else's, and that was on product he ordered in for me. I don't know what he made from them, but he was happy enough to price match, and he has talked about price matching other products too (Boss pedals i believe, which he said have a pretty bad mark-up already). If it puts any money in the till at all, make the sale.
 7.
That's life...
Yeah, that's what all the people say...
 8.
Would you like me to draw his attention to this thread? You could always drop him a line on Facebook or email BTW.
I imagine that would just bring about the usual "I'm sorry that blah blah blah". The thing is, he was a prospective buyer, whether he was just having a look or not. Before you buy something, you need to just have a look, don't you? The man may very well be busy, and doesn't have much time to lavish on tyre kickers, but if he was asking questions about it, he should have given him the courtesy of elaborating a bit.
 9.
Comms are king, because we're a forum innit !
Ironic... We're*
 10.
It's London, no one likes anyone. If you wanted banter you should have gone north of Nottingham!
Banter! That's one thing any good music shop should have! Kieran (that owns the music shop i use) is pretty happy for me to come in and just have a chat. A couple of weeks ago, he handed me a guitar, and he picked up a ukulele, and we started playing Wet Sand by RHCP. I played rhythm and he played the melody. It was pretty cool. Until my mum walked in and started saying stuff like "we have to go to a party later" (To Kieran)"Martin thinks i can take him places then just chat all day" For goodness sake mum, you ruined the jam!
 11. Also adding- I have never set foot within 200 miles of London, so safe to say i haven't been to The Gallery. None of my experiences written above are about The Gallery, but just a few meandering stories to show what good customer service, and loyalty gets for both parties.
 12.
I found myself in north London this weekend with a few hours to spare, so made a trip to Camden to check out The Gallery. I'm not really in the market for gear at the moment, but may be this year, and also thought it might be interesting to try the Dingwall Super P to feel what the fanned frets are like. I really felt that the member of staff there found me as an annoyance, answering questions in a short manner, no small talk, no offers to try either of the instruments that I was showing interest in, not even any eye contact. I didn't feel comfortable asking to play the Dingwall in this environment, so eventually left, mumbling an awkward "thanks, bye" on my way out (no reply) Is this the norm? or maybe I look like a penniless time waster! It really put me off the place, and when I do buy more gear, it certainly won't be top of my list of places to go. A bit of a disappointment :-(
Wow, can't say i would be much pleased myself. As i've said before, my mate runs a music shop. In reality, i didn't even know the fella before he owned the music shop. What happened was that the music shop that i would normally have used in Ballymena shut down, leaving just one place to go which isn't very well geared for what they would call "rock" musicians. Sure, they have a few guitars, a couple of sets of strings, then about 30 £10,000 pianos and walls filled with theory books. Trouble is, even their small selection of pretty poor accessories are stupidly expensive. So i took to google, and sound this new place. It was closer to home, so i went there. The guy was so friendly, and the shop was so handy that i just kept returning, and he has been happy to order in whatever it is i might want. He knows that i'm not a time waster, and that i have my eye on one of the acoustic lags that he has in at the minute. He's offered me to cover the shop before (which i was unable to do) and last week offered me a bass student. On saturday i was in, and he was off, but i really needed the neck plate screws that he had ordered in for me, so i eventually found them after a lot of searching, and the lady there said "He said to pay him next time you're in. He doesn't know the price off hand, but he trusts you enough to pay him next time". Not to mention i got some D'Addario goodies through him. The benefits of being loyal. For both of us. I go to him first for nearly everything now, which gives him good business, and i get what i need without any hassle.
 13.
What new technology did Clapton use?
Is Clapton considered innovative though? Great, certainly, but he wasn't really doing anything that didn't already exist, was he?
 14. What you are talking about here is changing the way things are done, yeah? Well, i have thought about this, and nearly anything you could do with your fingers or hands on the fretboard or with the strings has been done, so the only logical response would be- Yes, if somebody built a bass that had a new system on it. Obviously, since it doesn't exist, i can't say what that might be, but i am assuming there is somebody out there, who wants to do something in particular with their instrument, but physically can't, and will have to turn to modification and design to achieve it. Unless anybody here can say with certainty that anything that is possible has already been done with regards to modifications, i think that's the only way we are going to see something that actually hasn't been done before. Unless somebody comes up with new chords, or a new system for playing chords (like the barre system, only... different, somehow). Personally, i had a little idea a while ago. It's essentially a semi-acoustic guitar... only different. hmmm.
 15.
So can Katie Price.
Yes, but she needs a tyre pump.
 16. I don't have any money, but i have condoms...
 17.
You are a tripod and I claim my £5. Welcome to the mad house FG.
I can do pressups without my arms.
 18. Hi, I'm interested in this, but only for the right money. Unfortunately, i don't have any money, but i do have a fine collection of socks, dating from 1900 to 2000 that i reckon is worth about £10,000. I'd be willing to split it up to the value of your bass gear if you want to do a trade. I'll send you some photos in a PM.
 19.
I wired mine like this with a push-pull pot, but you could also substitute a DPDT mini toggle for the switch: http://www.seymourdu...ic=jass_bass_sp In series mode there is just one volume control for both pickups, plus the master tone. In parallel it's a normal Jazz with independent volumes.
That's great! Yes, i don't mind it having a single volume control in series. I might actually get other parts first, then get my dad to make me a new control plate, then i'll wire it all up! I want the parts to be matte black.
 20.
It's really noticeable when pickups are out of phase - usually two pickups in parallel and in phase will thin out and scoop the mids a little, but out of phase is a whole lot quieter with almost no low end. The simplest way to tell is to reverse the two wires from one pickup; one way round will be much louder and better sounding and this is when they are in phase. Pairs of Jazz pickups usually have opposite magnetic polarity and one coil reverse wired so that they will cancel hum but still have the output in phase. This works in both series and parallel. Regarding using series wiring on with Jazz pickups, I had a switch on mine to put the pickups in series and I found I never used it. Some people say the sound resembles a Precision, but to me it was just a bit thicker and sort of indistinct sounding, but still with the character of a Jazz bass in the highs.
A switch could be a good idea actually. And that would leave it that you still had independent volume controls in parallel?
 21.
I imagined you to be taller.
Nope, i have to walk on the keys of my laptop to type.
 22. Actually, don't bother answering, me and my 18 inches will go somewhere else.
 23.
I shouldn't worry Milty. I'm sure he's a teenager and as we all know teenagers try to make out it's bigger than it really is. Welcome aboard anyway, fermented grooves.
I turned 20 just over a month ago... what are you trying to say?
 24.

You might be lonely, Steve, but this isn't that kind of site
