1. Bit like asking which one of your kids do you prefer. It was the Lemon Song that made me take up the bass, at the time I was 15 and JPJ was 23 when he recorded Zep II, which gave me 8 years to get to his standard. Needless to say the 8 years has long since gone but still learning and loving it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92HjH1GG3ro Mr.Baldwin played on so many sessions the list is endless.
2.
Any interest in a carbon necked S1 classic fretless 4? Cheers o900
Sorry mate, have no need for a fretless for the forseeable future hence the sale.
3.
Just downloaded, and I look forward to grappling with this later on. Thanks for all the work you've put in to this!
Cheers for the thanks (not many do), Was fun to transcribe and happy to share.
4. ** Withdrawn ** Update. Bass now sold elsewhere. I am sorry, but I need to hold on to bass for a couple of months Bass is a 1997 3 eq model with black pick guard, never gigged and in excellant condition. Originally a fretless. I swapped neck for fretted after I originally replaced neck with a Status Graphite one. Bought bass from a young lady who bought bass in New York, she kept it on a stand in her lounge and never gigged with it. Neck has what appears to be a rubber scuff mark on the rear(see image) mark does not appear to have damaged the finish and does not affect playing, even if I rub mark with my thumb, it cannot be felt. Checked and set up in November 2011 all working 100%, hardly played since. Sale can include D tuner. MM case. Bridge has the mute option, not fitted at the moment but the Ernie Ball website sells the sets for around £20.00. Comes with Stingray hard case. Sale options: Fretted MM with hipshot[s] £800.00 [/s]now £750.00 Fretted MM without hipshot [s]£750.00[/s] now £700.00 Only trade I may consider is a Status Retroglide/Kingbass. I should perhaps point out that I first posted this ad back in August, but had a contract working away from September to December, so when I came back I started up post again.
5. I use a program called Amazing Slow Downer. Would be lost without it. If I need to boost the bass Audacity.
6.
Thanks for these wal4string. Always good to have more transcriptions in notation to work through
Many thanks for taking the time to comment. Ron
7.
Wuthering Heights is one of my favourite 70s songs. Haven't had the opportunity to find out the bassline by ear yet - anyone got a link to the dots by any chance, to save me (and anyone else who might be interested) a bit of time? Clarky, please keep us all posted about your next gig, with or without KB tribute. Hopefully a little closer to west London next time?
Hi bluejay, have just posted a transcription in the Theory and Technique Forum. I hope you enjoy playing it as much as I did working it out.
8. Been following the post in General Discussion forum on here and thought that fellow chatters may want to see a Transcription. This is a transcription from The Whole Story Album which is about 30 seconds longer than the single version. Be sure to save the file with a .pdf extention I had the good fortune a few years ago while working on a Cruise Ship to perform WH for one of the Fly On acts. Don't remember much about the transcription other than it had several time changes 4/4, 2/4 and 3/4 plus that the bottom F# and G# were played in a 2/4 bar. Never easy working out parts when there are many time changes. But with the knowledge of the 2/4 bar I worked out, hopefully correctly, the rest of the tunes structure.
9. Found this and thought fellow chatters may like to take a look.
10. Just put down the phone to the friend I mentioned. As the last post says examiners are happy for you to play one of the pieces from the book. He also said that there is nothing to stop you picking your own but not that easy to find a piece that is the required standard. He said Jaco would be a good choice and to my suprise he also mentioned Mark King, he did however mention a piece by David Sandborn "Run For Cover" which would be a good choice. I have never even heard of the tune so I quickly did a search and found a PDF transcription which I have posted in the Theory and Technique section on here.. I will be interested in playing this as it does look interesting. I hope this was worth the wait and of course I wish you all the best with your Grade 8.
11. Looking for the bass Transcription to Larry Carlton's "Room 335" can anyone point me in the right direction.
12.
I can read but I panic in a hurry!! Where as tab I don't panic (if that makes any sense!)
It never ceases to amaze me that anyone who can read TAB well are unable to grasp how uncomplicated reading notation is. I use Sibelius to write my scores and on the few ocassions I have converted a written piece to TAB I then can see how TAB can often make a piece harder to play. Putting aside the fact there is no indication of placement of notes in relation to the beat which restricts you to playing tunes you already have a clear idea of what the bass line should sound like, but I also find that TAB instructs you to change position far more than is needed. The trick to reading is to play the written note in the correct position for the notes that follow.i.e. if you are playing a piece which fall nicely under and around the second fret but then requires you to play a run starting on the 1oth fret, simply play the first section around the 7th fret, the notes are the same but the shift to the 10th fret will be a lot easier and smoother. I often find that TAB will show the former and not the latter. Of course another draw back with TAB is that you will never learn the names of the notes and that the higher up the neck you play the more options you have to play the same note in a different position.i.e. the E at the twelth fret of the E string (the thickest string, 4th string) is exactly the same note on the A string (3rd string) at the 7th fret, plus the same not on the D string (2 string) on the 2nd fret. So when it comes to reading notation you simply choose which note to play in relation to what follows with the least amount of movement of your left hand position.
13. It seems to me you want to run before you can walk. Been playing bass for longer than you, in the last 10 years mostly as a pro. In my extended resting time I try to learn a new technique, or try and transcribe lines I find interesting. On one such rest period I heard and really liked the bass on Hideaway by David Sandborn. The track begins with figure style and then goes into slap then back and fore, fingurestyle to slap. Struggle and listen as hard as I could I just couldn't get the slap sections down. Could never see myself playing track in a live situation I just gave up. Roll forward a few months and I fall across a second hand book by Stuart Clayton of Level 42 transcriptions and descided to knuckle down and learn to play at least one song from the book. The track I chose was "The Machine Stops" within a week I was able to play the whole song following the slap, hammer, pop, etc. by Stuart. Then returned to Hideaway, piece of urine. Can now also play Mark Kings fast triplets trick he uses in all his bass solo's all thanks to Stuart Clayton's books. Still can't ever see me being called on to play any of this in a live situation but slap is a really fun technique to learn. For me I always thought that he was a flash git who banged his bass with his left hand while singing, wrong, just take a listen to the tracks when he just plays fingure style and you can learn a lot from his use of ghost notes. To conclude, learn to walk.
14. Sent him an email, so, fingers crossed will hear from him soon.
15. I have a friend who is one of their chief examiners. If you want I will try and contact him and ask him what he considers a good choice. May take a while as he is always jetting off all over the world to carry out exams.
16. Looking for a good transcription of Nathen Watts bass part. Already know the main riffs and break, looking for all the noodlings in the last part of the song.
17. Nothing wrong with wanting to learn to slap. In my opinion it's what bassists do, so always a good idea to be able to play. I don't slap all the time but if a song calls for it then I do. Mark King uses a slap technique which involves hitting a string with the left hand without plucking with the right hand. This can clearly be heard on the Level 42 hit "Love Games". With this technique really fast runs can be played. Not sure about double thumbing maybe another chatter can answer. One thing I will say about slap it is great fun to play and well worth learning. Not seen the Stuart Clayton book but I am familiar with his Level 42 Transcriptions, which are highly recommended but are now like rocking horse droppings....... very hard to find. LH = left hand hit, no right hand
18.
I notice you say your hands "BURN" like crazy. You dont mention pain as such. This would suggest to me that what is happening is a build up of lactic acid. If you stop for a minute or two, does this burning sensation go away ? If you dont know, then try it and see. As well as all the good advice given so far, I would suggest that you warm up before a playing session. Before you even touch the bass, do some gentle stretches (search You Tube for "Hand Stretches for Guitar"). After that, SLOWLY do some chromatic scales above the 5th fret. Dont dive head long into fast strenuous playing immediately. Give the hand(s) a further 2-3 minutes to prepare for the strenuous task being asked of them. Here is an article on lactic acid which may throw some light into what may be happening in your situation : http://www.scientifi...actic-acid-buil
++1 Also check this thread http://basschat.co.uk/topic/177265-warm-up-how-and-how-long/
19. Thought fellow Basschatters may enjoy my transcription of the "Boz" Burrell classic. Can't Get Enough of Your Love.pdf As discussed below, The above file is actually a PDF. For some reason Basschat not only renames the file but also changes the file extention to .ipd. With internet explorer if you right click and download the file extention is automatically changed back to .pdf but with Chrome and Firefox the file extention needs to be changed to .pdf by you. For anyone still unsure I have included 3 .png's of the PDF. Will leave the 4 files posted until such time I may need the space for further pstings. So, if you find the files are no longer available PM me and I will be happy to email them to you.
20. Mark and I traded a Stingray Fretless neck for a fretted. Great communicacion and neck arrived from France within 3 working days. Cheers Mark it was a pleasure doing business. Ron
21. I wasn't having a dig at Scott far from it, I think his videos are very enlightening and a damn good watch for bass players. I did say IMO, surely we are entitled to an opinion.Likewise IMO the iPad is over priced and over rated, that doesn't mean that I am right?
22. Better to play on a 5 string, octave pedals always sound synthetic (see what I did there). Video is more of a plug for IMO an over produced mediocre tune.
