I fancied that little beauty too.....glad to see it's still around BC.

I couldn't handle anything heavier than 8 or 9 pounds, which is about the weight of a Fender....roughly.
This is my favourite Youtube video of Mr Manring. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=waIhJDgC5dQ
Those vids .....who does all that stuff? There's a Jaco one but oddly it's done on a IMO poor solo by Jaco so there isn't much difference. WEIRD FUNNY PEOPLE!!.

I had to watch it again....from 4.50 until the end is great, brilliant grooving with feel in Victors solo improv!
That was the worst thing I've ever heard, 10 minutes of pretentious jazz noodling while pulling 'arty' faces to uninteresting muddy sounding rhythm backing. Not only that But both (Berlin moreso) played some downright bad music in their solos, poor note choices (don't pretend they were trying to be arty, when you stop on notes that sound downright unmusical at that frequency in otherwise generic jazz soloing it isn't intensional), poor melodic flow etc. etc. Maybe theres some musical value in it somewhere but thats pretty much the worst I've seen of both those musicians.
I thought that was a great performance by Victor, in the moment...same for Jeff. Not sure how you can make judgement when you refer to it as Jazz noodling....there was more than just jazz!
The trouble with instruments like the bass is that people are encouraged to approach it casually and are offered all sorts of short cuts to perceived competence - 'play in a day' books can easily get someone up to playing a song all the way through in a relatively short time frame. Try that with a piano, a bassoon, violin or saxophone. Because of that, learners struggle to see the benefits of investing long hours in proper study. People all around them will start to justify their lack of investment with all sorts of statments about how proper study undermines your instinctive abilities, undermines your ability to play 'with feeling' etc. It is perfectly possible to play in a gigging band without any theory or 'proper' technique so people do. This affirms their 'I don't need to study' mentality and they proceed accordingly until one day, two years in or ten, they start to see the benefits they missed out on. By then, for many people, it is too late and domestic obligations prevent sustained study. I think the most important skill a new player can have is the development of a critical sense that allows them to recognise what is useful information that will help their progress as a player and what isn't. Who is giving you the right information. That way, whatever Jeff Berlin says can be critically analysed and informed decisions about the most appropriate way forward for a developing player can be made. Like most of us, JB can talk sense one minute and unmitigated b******S the next. We need to be able to recognise the difference.
Nicely put. I was one of those players......I stupidly thought that theory would hold back my natural instincts as a bass player, all my playing has come from meeting other players bad gigs, good gigs, imitating by ear...thousands of hours listening and applying things in a way I thought was right....I still do it..... BUT! these days I often think about what I've missed out on in theory.... I am totally convinced that I would be a better player if I'd studied earlier in life, to apply myself now is so difficult. I still agree with a lot of what JB has to say about music education.
Explain? Chuck Norris? I'm lost! Did he say what I posted then? No, if you look here, you'll find a lot of Chuck Norrisisms, for example: Chuck Norris doesn't read books. He stares them down until he gets the information he wants. When Chuck Norris does a pushup, he isn’t lifting himself up, he’s pushing the Earth down. When you said Jeff sees through the nonsense.....simple! it just reminded me of them. So I just wondered when we might get some Jeff Berlinisms, like, er: There were no such things as flats until Jeff Berlin hammered them out of naturals
Ohhhh, I see, I like the pushing down the earth one!
I have been lucky enough to get endorsements from JHS for their vintage basses and also for Dunlop Strings. Its just a matter of selling yourself to these guys. Oh and I can confirm you dont get the stuff for free...you do get it heavilly discounted though. DAve
Aye, that's about the size of it!....Very true.
Hey man...did you get it by calling Larry then? I've considered doing that, although, i'm not sure i want a Hartke one...i'm using my HA2000 pretty much exclusively at the moment though, my first amp and it's seen off a Thunderfunk, an Ampeg SVT (though that's becuase it's lighter, lol)...the cabs though...hmmm!!! I've recently got deals with Mike Lull and Rotosound, the endorsements are out there...it's grand, just have to look i guess. J
I've been in touch with Larry for the last month or so, initially it was just to say that I was very pleased with my HA4000, HA3500 and VX810, I also mentioned that I had great results from their strings. Hartke had been my choice since being a little disappointed in a few other makes I'd had the chance to try out on gigs, I just kept in touch with him, I presented him with some of my own bass recordings and some of the bands recordings and just told him about myself as a player, just like you mentioned bassjamm, it went from there really. Don't get me wrong it's not on the level of Jack Bruce or Stu Hamm, It's all good though, all positive and hopefully I can develop my relationship with Hartke. Not fussed on the cabs bassjamm?
No irony, Ck. I have come to see JB as the epitomy of what is/was wrong with Fusion (with a capital F). Complexity at the expense of humanity. There is little in Berlin's music or playing that is anything more than the evidencing of skills and competences. To use a literary metaphor, it is like looking at a writer's CV and never reading one of his books! JB is a craftsman who clearly wants to be an artist but in order to achieve this, he continues to work on his craft: "More technique, more technique, more knowledge, that'll do it, if I know more I will be better"!! You can read 1,000 books on roses but, until you have smelled one.... I really WANT him to do something beautiful but, so far, its all nuts and bolts.
Fair enough Bilbo, but how can you expect Jeff....of all people to play something beautiful! I don't think he has that type of approach in him...when you consider things like Crepping Terror, etc.....jeff's always been like this in my eyes a super well educated virtuoso bass player, I agree technique all the way...but I stll like the chap Even says in one of his old vids..."Super technical approach."
Hey Jase, that's cool... Did you ring Larry on his 'cellphone'? I have to do that at some point. Will you be taking delivery of the new 'Hydrive' speakers? Would be very interested to hear about them. Always loved Hartke gear. Cheers ped
Cheers Ped, Yeah, the cell phone number is everywhere!! Well, obviously I'm not in the position to be given huge amounts of new gear for free........(apart from strings) but as far as amplification goes.....it's incredibly discounted according to Larry. I'm told there are various levels of endorsement at Hartke....I must be a newbie, Ha! onwards and upwards then! He's a very nice chap and whatever you need, depending on your level of exposure as a player they will sort a deal! ...So, tidy darts!
I always liked Head For Backstage Pass by Jeff Beck. Really underrated song. Wilbur Bascomb on bass.....very cool. also Do you know Squarepusher? by Squarepusher.......IDM...you got to love it. finally Reza/Giant Steps/Reza (Reprise) by mr Pastorius himself from the Invitation album. SOme awesome moments on that album especially his furiously chainsaw-like fuzz at the end where he has a few licks then plays the folk kind of riff with the entire band....absolutelly breathtaking.
That's a killer version of Reza! Zappa riffs get me going.... Tell me you love me and the riff in Magic Fingers!
Sorry mate you are wrong that was Herbie Flowers! Having read one more "Jeff is a douche" post it makes me really sad, you know why because I met Jeff twice (one in NY and another back in my motherland) and he was the most reachable and nicest of guys, we even were joking about what people says of him! He gave me lots of good advice too. What JB doesn't manage to do is to explain his point in a way that is easy for most people and sometimes he can sound really arrogant but I attribute that to some degree of frustration. Someone said that learning music doesn't teach you how to groove, well that is one of the most ludicrous statement I've seen, just think about 3 of your favourite players of all time and google a bit and you'll find that those guys learned music. Anyway JB comments are oriented to those guys who want to become professionals like Nathan East, Lee Sklar people who want to play professionally and not only one genre of music. One of the points Jeff made the time we talked was that once you know what you're playing your speed increases because you know where you are going on the fingerboard. Another person said that JB played 3 notes in SB's bass and then gave it back, well he actually played something (in reality he was just a bit of tune) and gave it back but the point he made was that he was able to play that unlined fretless because he knew were the notes are, that's why he said give me one night (I think it was). regarding Metronomes JB states clearly that they are not going to give you time and he is right, he told me that the metronome is only good to learn how to subdivide and if you want to get good timing you should be better of practicing with a drum machine. I guess that the main problem with Jeff is that he doesn't like to spoon feed people but let them discover things by themselves. Rich if you can get your hand on Alan Holdsworth "Water on the brain" to me that's Jeff's best solo ever. Just my 2p.
Yep, I get tired of the Jeff comments, I don't agree with everything he says, he does make sense with lots of his points...and if he's a little arrogant, so what? He's still rated high in my book.
That sounds interesting. I'll do a little search and see what I can find.
I'm on a mission...still no luck. Just wish I could remember the guys name.
Which version? I've got 6 different versions on my computer. I don't have a transcript though. You shouldn't really need one - unless this particular version had something interesting happening on the bass. The changes in most versions are pretty straightforward.
I'm not sure of the bass players name but he did a chord melody, solo type version??? I'd managed to find the TAB for his version too...so annoying, I've lost both files.

Well, I for one, really wish I had started to read the same time I started playing bass, it would be great to understand what I'm playing or where it comes from or what it's called.
Pretty much, it was described to me as the band 'Imploded' I got to see them though, it was a monumental gig. I later then toured and recorded with Ike and Bobby Martin. Seperately.
Ahh, right. what great musicians those guys are! Edit: Good point it's OT. Sorry.
