1. Are we meant to have more than one rig? I have 'a' rig. It's an EBs Reidmar and a Gallien Krueger 14" cab with a tweeter in it. It cost me £400 for the head and £300 for the cab. I would just use that for everything I think.. Maybe at some point I could get some of those small EBS cabs for smaller gigs, or I could just turn it down and save £600!!
2. I really don't rate the Chilis, they are quite boring IMO, very studio polished sounding, not really my bag. I do like funk, especially older funk, I am not 'opposed' to the slap style, I just don't like Flea's playing. He is good at his particular thing, I just don't find it all that nice to listen to. Neither do I particularly enjoy listening to a lot better players such as Marcus Miller, yes they are amazing and I occasionally have a listen so I can say 'wow' and 'cor listen to that' but musically it leaves me cold. I am much more excited by rawness and passion than polish and technique.
3. Ah but I realised that for the same money you could get this: http://www.thomann.de/gb/vht_avsp6h_special_6_allvalve.htm .. and there is no contest!
4. Hey 1976Fenderhead, I just got the Reidmar.. Yes to the power input 'giving' a little bit, in fact it made a little snapping sound when I first plugged in the kettle lead and yes it is slightly 'wiggly'. No though to the one light being dimmer, they both appear about the same brightness. I toyed with the idea of taking it back to the shop (I bought local) because of the wiggly lead but perhaps it's like that on all the units. The amp is great though eh? I tried a lot of amps including ones with much higher supposed power ratings (including the ABM III at apparently 1000watts) and it was not only much louder but the sound quality and tone is way better than even much more expensive amps I tried. How are you gettin on with yours?
5. I might see if they've got them in PMT as it's local...
6. Hmmmm crippling indecision is taking hold hahaha
7. KiOgon thanks, nice suggestion. Love your avatar pic, my hero!
8. Thanks Tony! That white tele is nice, hmmmm could I do white....? I do like the look of the unbranded one as well, I wish I could play it first!
9. Sue Ryder? As in the charity shop? Yeah fair play, I am willing to do some tweaking but ideally not loads, I'm also gonna take a look at these old Arias you mentioned, thanks for the reply
10. I want a telecaster- on the cheap! I am a bass player mainly and already have a really nice Tokai Les Paul so I don't want to go mad, I just want a decent 'knockabout' Tele. I was looking at the Squier ones and they sem pretty good for the money, I've seen them go for as little as £100 used on eBay. Is there anything else in the sub- £200 price range worth looking at? Cheers chaps and chapettes.
11. Yeah some players are instantly recognisable- Wilko Johnson of Dr Feelgood, Hendrix obviously, Jack White, Les Claypool, older things like Mississippi John Hurt I also recognise straight away, lots in fact but not everyone.
12. Probably my life long favourite, Hendrix's solo on Hey Joe. I also love Jack White's ecstatic solos such as on Ball & Biscuit, the solo ffrom Paranoid (Black Sabbath obviously) and countless other things!
13. I think I would have to flat out ask him if he realised he was singing a bit flat. I suppose if time has gone on it becomes a bigger deal to say that someone has been singing flat *all this time* but if it's starting to bother you this much (which it's bound to) you don't have too many options. Offer any and alll help with anything that will help him, it will be more difficult for him to be pissed off with you if he sees you are more than willing to take time to work on it with him.
14. One single solitary bass here, my beloved USA Fender jazz, I always said I love my jazz so much that the only thing I would ever replace it with is a vintage Fender jazz. I don't know though, I might get a second bass one day, the thing is it would probably be another jazz type, like a Sandberg say. There is another bass in the house, my husband's Ibanez destroyer which is... errr... destroyed haha, he was in a psychedelic grebo band in the 80s and it has been 'customised'. It plays well though. Different basses are different to play so in answer to the original question, yes to some degree you spread yourself a ittle bit thinner playing on more than one bass, but the payback is that you get used to different basses in case you need to play one.
15. Thanks for the reply Bluejay, these are the two I was looking at, cheapest of the cheap http://www.thomann.de/gb/harley_benton_eub_500_sb_electric_upright.htm http://www.thomann.de/gb/stagg_edb_34_vbr.htm
16. I am toying with the idea of getting an EUB, I can't have a real DB, we are both musicians in our house and have a LOT of music equipment already and with two kids... an acoustic DB would just be stupid! But when I hear the bassline on, for example, Rumble (Link Wray) I really, really want an upright bass. So the question is, how about a budget model like the Stagg or the Harley Benton they have in Thomann...? Would I be disappointed with it or is it excellent value for money? Is there one worth saving up a bit more for? I can't justify a massive purchase- again: kids, already have many musical instruments and a lot of other kit ... There's no point me getting something I would straight away outgrow (I have a lengthy musical background so tend to learn quickly and already play bass guitar), is the Stagg going to be able to see me past learning the fundamentals? Has anyone got any experience of those Harley Benton ones? I only know one upright player and not well, he is a hardcore rockabilly player and would probably think that EUBs are some kind of blasphemy so I didn't want to ask him! Thanks in advance
17. Wicked! I love a lot of very old music so stuff like washboard, broom handle bass and other 'home made' solutions are really cool as far as I'm concerned. The sound that comes out of some of those cajones is amazing! Plus, in the plural it sounds like cojones
18. Yeah I saw these in PMT when I bought my bass rig, I totally want one, it's the cutest thing I've ever seen and really sounds amazing for the size of it! I really love all the Orange 'lunchbox' amp heads, they are lovely. I would have tried the bass terror when I was in there but they didn't have one. I am gonna buy the Micro Terror though one of these days.
19.
Don't forget the humble washboard to which you can add all manner of 'bangy' stuff and still hold it and walk around and pose. Steve
absolutely! the washboard was used to marvellous effect on stuff like Blind Boy Fuller, really cool.
20. ooops! Sorry! For some reason it was at the top in the threads! Some kind of weird glitch?
21. I recommend you start getting into good habits now or it will cost you later on and be hard to correct. Look up Youtube videos for 'floating thumb' or 'right hand muting' for bass. If you are getting the sttring rattling against the frets you are playing too hard I should think, again, it will be easier to see this on a youtube video than to read it. There are lots of excellent tutorials available or free. Good luck.
22. oooh forgot about 'mybass', check it out just for fun
23. I have the Note and when it first arrived I was gonna return it- MASSIVE! But I love it now, so much better to have the screen size and you get used to the size. The convenience of having the large screen far outweighs any apparent inconvenience I also use G Strings and DaTuner Lite , also you can get drum machines, I have G-Stomper which you program, but I want one that's just loops as well, there are loads. There are fretboard apps and tabs apps (those are usually just wrappers for people's websites).
24. I agree with the OP, I won't pay 80% of new price for anything used. Of course if people can get that much they will ask that much and I can't blame them, we all want to recoup as much as we can when we sell things on. I just would rather pay a little bit more and have the warranty. I do like to be frugal but for me I have to save 1/3-1/2 the new price to consider it prudent to buy used.
25. Be aware that some music shops who offer tuition sometimes have dreadful teachers. The shops make a lot of money renting the rooms to teachers and can become desperate to have a full house and if a good teacher isn't forthcoming they will take almost anyone. I'm sure some have standards but I have experience of two music shops and both had teachers who were unable to offer good solid tuition, bedroom shredders being the usual, only able to play the one style they've learned, only able to pass on what they know which is relatively little, and in some cases disinterested, I hd one guitar teachertrying to stretch things out to fill the time slot and insisting on teaching me classical style shredding techniques a la Yngwie Malmsteen which I can't stand, . after I had asked to learn more blues-based lead work an help to get a better overall solidness to my guitar playing. I literally felt that my money may as well have been stolen from my purse. Be warned!
