1. I have mild tinitus. Pretty sure it was drummer related, cymbals etc, although the rhythm guitarist we used to have tended to ramp himself up and drown everyone else out. He's not with us now. But I have been using earplugs since I started to notice the ringing was not going away after gigs, and since then, it has halted the progression. Even though it is only a low whine, I am aware of it when I think about it, like now! But, thankfully, even with stupidly loud gigs, the ears show no signs of the whining getting any worse. Personally, I now never go anywhere loud without earplugs. Always wear them at any rehearsal and live show. I just don't want to exacerbate the situation and trigger an event whereby the whine gets significantly worse for the rest of my life. I use the ER20s. For me, they certainly do cut alot of the higher frequencies, which makes the "sound" of the gig pretty muddy, and often gives me the impression of overpowering bass in the mix, but we know that is not the case from the sound check. That is the only down side for me, as I feel tempted to knock back the lower frequencies when playing, but I know I shouldn't as it is an artifact of the ear plugs. So in an indirect way, yes, it does affect the playing to some degree.
2. Firmly in the used but not abused camp, in line with what others have said above. (I also don't like letting others use my gear, not that I am asked much anyway, but on one shared gig, the bassist was using my rig, and unplugging his bass without turning down the volume etc - very loud pops and bangs. None too happy!)
3. Bizarre one this...usually get told to turn down, but the place last night kept saying louder...can't imagine how the guys standing in front of us were actually enjoying it! But it was what they (and the landlord!!) wanted!
4. A favourite saying of our drummer when he first joined, was, when not knowing the songs and gigs approaching fast, "don't worry, we'll busk it...". (Just to say, fair play to him, he did do a grand job as it turned out, with not many cock-ups at all...and still with us today almost 10years on).
5. Ex rhythm guitarist, would always play too loud. Sound balance was crap. Us: turn down, you're too loud! Him...walks over to the amp, waves his hand over the volume and walks back. Us: you didn't even touch the thing! Him: no, I'll turn down on the guitar instead. ...needless to say, he never did.
6.
When you meet a drummer and if they say they like Bonham and/or Tony Thompson. you're usually onto a good thing.
That's OK then, our drummer is a Bonham worshipper!
7.
Let a guitarist tune my bass, which was well out. We had to stop the first song, retune and start again.
Don't know why, but that made me laugh!
8. Blimey, looks like I need to learn some vehicle packing skills, judging by some these stories!
9.
Herman Li of Dragonforce. Although he's crap, and easily the worst guitarist in the band, he does dominate. Liam
10. Presumably the instructions Trace themselves supply (set input gain to amber, then adjust volume via the master) is the best approach for the best use of their head? Why would a manufacturer tell you to use their head in a non-optimised manner - a bit daft if they did!
11. Everyone is different, why feel like the odd one out because you don't like 2 bands that others in the band do? Unless of course, you are in a Led Sabbath or Black Zeppelin cover band! (Our drummer is a Bonham fanatic...(not being a drummer, I don't understand why)! Bacause of that, he is so easy to wind up!! Even more so, since he openly states his hatred of Phil Collins...once, his work colleagues signed him up to PC's fan club...to say he was not happy, was an understatemenT )
12. Hehehe...slight confusion here! I'm not aiming to set the EQ the same as the pre-shape and then use it like this, I simply wanted to understand what frequencies were being altered when using the pre-shape, and to achieve that, I was flipping between pre-shape+no EQ and EQ+no-preshape and trying to replicate it. Not being able to, I thought I would simply post on here and see if anyone knows how the pre-shape was...well, shaping! So thanks to Stevie for a nod in the right direction! Just for info, I neither slap or finger, I use a pick. It is all personal taste, but I like the pre-shape sound, through a 4x10 and 1x15 (or sometimes a 2x10) rig. For any EQ, I tend to either balance between the pick ups, and/or use the actives on the bass (which is rare). For what we do, the pre-shape sound in conjunction with my bass works very well, and I and the other members of the band, like the overall sound.
13.
Should be able to make that pre-shape on the graphic and then compare
That's my aim!
14.
It's a straightforward question that deserves a straightforward answer, which is: +6dB @ 50Hz; –12dB @ 400Hz; +6dB @ 5kHz. From the Trace Elliot catalogue here: http://www.traceelli...og/catalog.pdf. Obviously not a trade secret then.
Thanks for the link! To be honest, never looked at the catalogue before, as I didn't think it would have specs like this in it. I stand corrected!
15.
Why you are asking this ? Is it for academic purposes, or something else ? it may help to structure an answer to your question.
Why? As I said, for curiosity, as I use a Trace head and pre-shape, so would like to kow how the pre-shape shapes the sound. I can never quite replicate the pre-shape when it is off and using only the EQ.
16. Just curiosity really, I have a Trace head, and always use the pre-shape. I read it boosts bass/treble and cuts the mids. Does anyone actually know the exact specifications of which frequencies it boosts/cuts and by how much, or is it a Trace guarded secret? Cheers!
17. Just wandering why some cabs have ports on the rear and some on the front? Any advantage/disadvantage for which design? (My Trace cabs are front ported while my TC one is rear). Ta!
18. I use ER20's - the quoted spec is a -16db drop. I've used them for a number of years now, and started to use them after low level tinitus started to remain after gigs. Hopefully I've caught it early enough to prevent further deterioration/damage. They are OK for my ears, although the sound for me is very bass heavy, nothing like hearing the band during a sound check. But, even sound checks set my ears off, so I will never not use the plugs. The band is loud - at rehearsals, playing at gig levels, or less, we see around 110, spiking to 115-120, (we are just a 3-piece). I was concerned that the ER20s wouldn't be enough, but after playing 2-3hrs, my ears are fine - no whining or whistling. Just need to ensure they are comfortable and that they are sealed well.
19. Hahaha...I had to ask! Thanks for the links, will enjoy having a read!
20. Hi there, Been playing around with a couple of cabs tonight, and hearing the different sounds had me thinking why do they sound so different? Same head, same settings etc, but one cab clearly had significantly more...not sure on the right terms to use, but more depth/more bottom etc. Both cabs, have 10" speakers, by the way. So, why & how do different speakers produce different sounds, when run from the same guitar/amp/settings? Just curious to understand the "physics" behind it...! Ta!
21. I used to use an Akai Unibass, ran the clean, constant output to the bass rig, and the 2nd output was switchable (to a guitar rig), so I could hit the pedal to introduce a phantom rhythm guitarist, when needed!
22. Thanks. I get the principle of overall load on the amp, I believe mine is min load of 4ohms. I also think it is a mono amp. I wasn't sure that if you linked a 2nd cab to the first one (daisy chaining?) the load rating would follow the same rule as if you connected 2 cabs separately to the amp. From what you are suggesting, linking the cabs together is still wired in parallel, so with 2x 8ohm cabs daisy-chained the load on the amp is still 4ohm, and is just fed via one of the outputs. I guess this is not recommended since more current has to flow down the single connecting cable rather than splitting the current into two cables. I'm sure I read somewhere, that cabs can also be wired such that the linking of two together is in series and not a parallel. How would you know? There is nothing on the cabs to state what kind of wiring has been used for the link socket.
23. Thank you for the replies already, I do appreciate you taking the time. I have been reading some other threads to, but it is sometimes quicker to ask a question and get a straight answer than wade through 10's or 100's of posts! I will keep reading anyway! My main concern was using the two different power rated cabs from a single head. But from what I can gather from the answers here and on the sticky thread, it would be OK. I have already used them in this combination at my last gig, but wanted to check to see whether I was doing something that was totally not recommended!
