1. Hi there, I currently run 2 cabs (1x15 and 4x10) from one amp head. Just wondering if there is any way that I can apply an effect to just one of the cabs? I guess you can't add a pedal to the signal out from the amp to the cab? I hope that doesn't calassify as "daft question fo the day"! Cheers Andrew
2. Self tought guitar. Only tried bass when a work mates band needed a bass player. Borrowed one from someone else and gave it go. Took a little while to not play it as a guitar. But 9 years on, and am still with the band and still playing the bass. Still play guitar at home or when writing songs. So, not so much converted, but playing different instruments for different occasions.
3.
Leave a little longer between songs and relax your picking hand.
Not if your guitarist/singer launches straight into the next song without warning...!!!
4. Well, that was an intersting discussion - thanks for all the replies. I plumped for the Peavey. It arrived last night - a quick go reveals - well, its a bass head! A good range of sounds, and even something pretty close to the TE pre-shape sound that normally I use. Got to say that the sub harmonic generator function is crap! They even say in their user manual that bass is a complex waveform ..blah blah blah.......so in other words preparing you for the fact that it does not work well! It did not track the played note at all well - sounded great when it was in tune (1 octave lower), but it just kept jumping to different notes (presumably picking up on the "complex waveform" and choosing to track a different frequency!). But its just a gimmick, and I had no plans on using it really (unless it worked exceptionally well and gave a fantastic effect), so I won't loose any sleep over it. I'm looking forward to giving the 450 a work out with the band though!
5. I get this to, if I don't regularly play. For me, I put it down to lack of muscle tone. Lots of playing - no problems. I recently had a go with the ol' Gripmaster thing - I think it helps with the fretting hand, but I could not find a position to hold the thing that reflects using the same muscles as you do when gripping a pick. So I'd say no, it would not help with the problem. Just play/rehearse a bit more to build the strength in the thumb muscle.
6. I've been wearing plugs for the last 2 years or so...but only after the tinnitus had set in. Of course I now seriosuly regret not wearing the plugs earlier - for me, as it is probably for alot of people, it was a combination of the tinnitus wearing off after a gig and the (shall we call it) "embarassment" factor that stopped me trying them earlier, thinking it was not a problem. It is now! Hoepfully I have caught mine early enough that it is still mild - although now I am reading this thread, I am aware of it in a noisy(ish) office. The guitarist and drummer in our band do not wear plugs, even though they know I do, and I suggest they should do so to. At the moment they say their ears recover...... I am surpirsed that no-one has ever mentioned the use of the plugs at a gig. People must see me put them in, and maybe even see them in place, but I have not had one comment about wearing them! Really surprised me! Goes to show that the "embarrasement" factor was not real at all...... OK, the plugs do affect your ability to hear the overall sound perfectly, but frankly I don't really care! I want my ears to stop ringing - or at least to not get any worse! I do a sound check with no plugs in to get the overall sound OK, then play the gig with the plugs in, even if the sound in my ears is very bassy due to the plugs cutting the high end frequencies. In the end, it is everyones choice, but it is a shame that people don't listen to advice, especially where ears are concerned! It's a shame that more advice is taken notice of when asking about what head or cab to use, than protecting a valuable physical property that can never be replaced.
7. Thinking about getting either the Hartke LH500 or Peavey Tour 450. Been reading the recent thread about the LH 500, and seems to get pretty favourable comments. What about the Tour 450? Anyone used one? Basically - LH500 or the Tour 450? For some reason, I am being drawn to the 450.....
8. Bear with me, it may be a daft idea but I need someone to say it is! Current gear: TE 300w @4ohms head + 400w 4x10 cab (8ohm) + 300w 1x15w cab (8ohm). I wish to buy a 2nd head as a back up. Now I was thinking of getting one with say around 500w @ 4ohms (Hartke LH500 for example, or Peavey Tour 450) for a bit more head room, esp when cranking the system up. I get a little nervous running the head up at around 8 in some places. So in large places that require that bit extra, I was thinking about the larger head. To the question: would there be any advantage in using both heads so having 1 cab per head, rather than running both cabs off of one head (in larger venues)? Does anyone do this, and if so, are there any benefits? Cheers!
9. Hi there, I want to buy a back up head. I am just a little confused with the old wattage/ohms thing - apologies! Current set up: TE AH300-7 head (300w at 4ohms) + 4x10cab (400w at 8ohms) and 1x15cab (300w at 8ohms). I run both cabs - so does that mean that the head is running at 8ohms and so kicking out a max power of around 150-200w? I am contemplating several heads with a bit more power: Ashdown MAG300 (300w at 4ohms) - so basically the sam as I currently use Peavey Tour 450 (450w at 4 ohms or 300w at 8 ohms) Hartke LH500 (500w at 4 ohms.....guessing around 300w at 8 ohms). So with both cabs running off the same head - should I really be looking at the Peavey or Hartke which would be better matched on the power front to the 2 cabs (i.e. pushing 300w at 8ohms, like thte cabs 3-400w at 8ohms)?? I typically run the current TE head between say 5 and 8 on the output stage (input is matched to the LEDs indicators), depending on the venue. Thanks for any clarification or advice! Andrew
10. Interesting comments, thanks. Will certainly bare this in mind the next time we play there.
11. Hi there, Just returned from a gig last night - bit of a nightmare. Just wanted to see if there were any electricians out there who could offer some thoughts? Scenario: We have played at one particular club several times now, and each time the place causes serious background hum/buzzing on the guitarist's amps and the PA. It is the only place this happens. We were told that other bands used to suffer this to, but the place has been re-wired which had apparently got rid of the problem - until we turned up! The buzzing was so bad, that we were told it was almost unbearable at times. The gear: I know it is a bass forum, but the bass gear was not affected. I also run the bass through a Unibass pedal and use a guitar amp in conjunction with my bass gear -neither had any issues. What was being affected was the guitarists' amps - he was using 2 AC30's, one a '63 and one a '06 model. Also the PA, which is a Mackie mixer unit with 2x dbTechnologies powered speakers. As I said, any other place we play, the equipment is quiet. It is only this place! Any ideas what is producing this interference? The lights around the stage area were all turned off (although not throughout the entire club - it was pretty large). Any thoughts would be very much appreciated! Thanks, Andrew
12. I've used the ER20's for about 2 years now. Really wished I'd tried them earlier. Unfortunately, until I got mild tinitus, I thought I was OK, but now I have it, I regret not using ear plugs earlier. But hey ho! you live and learn, and now I've just got to live with it! I bought a db monitor a while back, and had it at rehearsals, just out of interest to see what level the band plays at. We rehearse in a small village hall. Basically at what the band (i.e. the other 2 members!) think is an OK level to rehearse at, i.e. what volume the band naturally settles at, was around 110-115dB for the drummer/guitarist, but when the bass kicked in, it was spiking repeatedly at 120-125dB. An eye opener, and justifies my use of the ear plugs. What surprises me, is that the other 2 still don't use any ear denfenders, and just rely on their natural ability to repeatedly recover after rehearsal/gigs. So far neither has tinitus problems, but then I didn't until 2 years ago. I did think to start with, that ear plugs would be very conspicuous and was pretty conciencious about them, but no-one has ever questioned them at gigs, not once. Personally, I have tried foams as well, but they are too muffled for my personal liking, so have stuck with the ER20's - which do give a much clearer sound, in my opinion.
13.
www.britishaudioservice.com has them all, but they have a min order value of $15.00 so you'd need to buy a lot!
Thanks for the pointer! I seem to remember a company called GMAudio from a while back. Does anyone know if this is still going?
14.
Might be worth trying www.trace-elliot.co.uk Good luck. All the best Gary.
Literally just got a reply from them to try EMS. So they are the next port of call.
15. Hi there, The input knob mine does not have the screw cover so has the central screw showing - only cosmetic, but annoying. Been trying to find a supplier of these TE style knobs, does anyone know anywhere that may sell them? thanks, Andrew
16. Well, just to complete the thread, volume pot was at fault, the track inside had broken. In addition, something to do with the EQ board was loose, and there was a split track on the fan controller (not sure what that actually means, maybe on the PCB?). The head has never cut out, so the fan has been working, but there was obviously the potential for something to happen at any time (i.e. fan to cut out and the head to overheat). So overall, it was worth having it looked at. £45 all sorted.
17. Well took the main unit out of the casing, and can't see anything wrong. Far too complicated for me!! So it's gone off to a chap to have a look at. Fingers crossed it is an easy to locate issue! Anyone else had issues with TE heads?
18.
Sounds like the output pot has shorted somehow. They are mounted directly onto a verticle PCB IIRC. Try taking the case apart and spraying a load of contact cleaner (Maplin) in and around the output pot. Also check on the "solder" side of the board near to the three pot contacts. The short MAY be visible.
Thanks for the pointers! Andrew
19. Hi there, I've got a Trace Elliot AH300-7 head and went to do our 1st gig of the year yesterday, only to find the output is knackered - it seems set to full on no matter where the pot is set (better than no output, I suppose, at least we could still do the gig, by dropping the input gain significantly). I have no recollection of dropping or knocking the head - I look after my gear very well. Any idea of what has gone wrong - presumably electrical? The output button still turns as it should, doesn't feel like it is broken. Has anyone had any similar problems, and therefore give me an indication before I try to find someone willing to have a look at it? Thanks for any info! Cheers Andrew

Hallo!

Just signed up. My name in Andrew, and I was over on Bassworld for a little while before it disappeared. I play bass in a covers band, although we are currently writing our own stuff, so will eventually have a CD of original material. Of the numbers written so far, its fair to say there is a wide range of musical styles going on! Anyway, I play a Schecter Diamond series 5 string, with a Trace Elliot 300w head through Trace 4x10 and 1x15 cabs. Since we are a 3 piece (we were originally 4, then strayed to 5, then back to 4 and finally 3!!), I also use a Unibass pedal that is run to a Trace SuperTramp. Other than that pedal, I use no other effects. To be honest, the sound from the Schecter and the Trace gear is great. I've had quite a few people comment on how good it sounds, so why tamper!! Cheers! Andrew
