Are you sure they were not once chocolate covered peanuts ? if they were, that means that they've been re-finned,and so are worth less than original.
I could have them refinished in something that looks very much like chocolate if you like.

USA FENDER GUITARS
Jean-Luc Pickguard replied to snazz's topic in Accessories & Other Musically Related Items For Sale
Got this from GUITAR TIPS site Remove some but not all of the tension from the strings, clean & polish the guitar, and then put a little lemon oil on the fret board. Put the guitar in its case and store it where it won't get too warm, cold, or humid and won't get bumped around. A good place is an interior closet.
Sounds like a guitar tips article written by someone who doesn't understand what a truss rod does. Glad there's no permanent damage. -
USA FENDER GUITARS
Jean-Luc Pickguard replied to snazz's topic in Accessories & Other Musically Related Items For Sale
It's under my bed with the strings slackened off where it has been for about 3 years.
Why were the strings slackened off? You could have a permanent backbow in the neck if the strings haven't been counteracting the pull of the truss rod for three years. -
That is lovely - looks very much like my '90 MIJ '62RI P A likely cause of the cutting out issue is that the jack socket has lost its spinginess - I've seen that on a few japanese fenders. If so its a ten minute job to upgrade it to a switchcraft 1/4" mono jack socket (£3.50 from axesrus) Great price - good luck with the sale
Not much call for possibly re-finished peanuts. Now Monkeynuts and you get my attention.
I found some monkeynut shells there as well, but sadly the contents were missing.

They're probably M&S extra large salted
Are they still the original factory colour?
under the fluff, yes they do appear to be. Whoa - just notice the "no access to the pots" - a bit of a schoolboy error. The answer to one of the Qs "In order to create the sealed cavity to the correct volume i had to include the electrics cavity, if i had added an standard access this would have compromised the cavity." is a bit odd - even if that was the case it is no excuse for making access to the pots impossible. Reading the rest of the blurb, it seems the bridge p/up isn't a piezo in the bridge as I guessed earlier from the style of the bridge, but another MM type buried and not adjustable. Just plain weird.

She will be mine, Mwwhahaa
Mwwhahaa
You're going to rip the frets out & put it through a delay pedal? -
Just found some peanuts down the back of the sofa. Very good condition once you've brushed off the fluff, but the salt may need replacing. There are around eight in total, but to be fair I will split them into pairs unless anyone really wants all of 'em.

I think I have seen the greatest bass in the world!

He also had an amp made by Dudley Moore, but it wasn't up to much. -

If you could start again.. what bass..
Jean-Luc Pickguard replied to bubinga5's topic in Bass Guitars
I gigged the hohner the most and it was great for touring with but I guess I'd go back to the 70/80s P-bass and actually get it set up as opposed to thinking 'this doesn't play well!'
I owned my '81 precision for over 20 years and for most of those thought it was a bit of a dog before learning to do setups & taking it to the gallery to get the frets levelled & crowned. It still weights more than John Prescott & Eric Pickles combined though. -

I'd get just a Squier Short Scale Candy Apple red Jaguar bass and a set of flatwounds. -
I think the bridge pickup is actually piezos in the bridge

Spot the ringer
Jean-Luc Pickguard replied to Jean-Luc Pickguard's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I sent him this:
Thanks for adding the pic. Unfortuantely this confirms (with other details) that this bass is not a genuine Fender mustang but a Squier bronco modified to look like a mustang. Mustangs have a dot marker between the highest two frets which is not present on a bronco or on the one you are selling. I suggest you change the listing to reflect this.
& got back this
hi, I have checked by an expert and you're right. I made a bad purchase. I now remove the instrument from ebay. I thank you immensely
& it has indeed been withdrawn. -
Spot the ringer
Jean-Luc Pickguard replied to Jean-Luc Pickguard's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
I didn't get as far as looking at the feedback What jumped out at me was that the dot between the last two frets (nearest the body) is not present - indicating a bronco neck. I wasn't sure about the truss rod access as the pic wasn't clear, so I asked him if he had a better pic - now added. Yep its at the wrong end. I'm going to tell him (politely) that it is a modifed bronco. -
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...ME:B:SS:GB:1123 Oh dear - I hope no one pays 70s mustang money for what appears to be a tarted up squier bronco. The first line "I do not know the history of this wonderful electric bass perfectly captures the spirit of the mid-years' 70 ..." is probably intended as a get out clause in case he's rumbled, but its listed as a Fender Mustang. If this belongs to anyone's good friend I apologise in advance. No offence intended - I'm sure he's a wonderful bloke and doesn't know anything about fenders so is entirely blameless. Please feel free to point out if you don't agree & think I am wrong. I won't post my observations yet, I'd be interested to see if anyone else can see what I think is wrong with it.

I tried a badass on my 81 heavy ash precision once. It took away a lot of the punch/attack/oomph. As soon as I put the BBOT back on, the punch/attack/oomph was back - there is a difference & on that precision the difference was so marked that I'm sure I'd be able to tell which bridge was fitted - even with my eyes closed. The main difference I've noticed between neck-thru & bolt-on basses is that you can't shim a neck-thru, but soundwise I dunno as its impossible to compare the same bass with both options.

Don't Like My Varitone - Modding Advice Needed
Jean-Luc Pickguard replied to Rumple's topic in Repairs and Technical
series parallel is like the Fender S1 switch on jazzes from a few years ago - you can get a more beefy precision-like sound in the additional series position. -
Hope it wasn't the Marianne Faithfull one...
You mean one that never existed - as that story was made up.

Most all-in one jazzes I've seen were 80s US IIRC, so if this is an all-in-one mexican it could be a hoppus which is more a precision in a jazz skirt.

I tried loads of compressors looking for a transparent to even out my level without sounding squashed. I now use a cheap-as-chip behringer green limiter pedal and found that was what I was really after.
