  1. I would go M80 - you can still remove and put in basses while it's stood up, no problems.
  2. Yes, I normally tame the treble on it. To be honest, my favourite sound on it is parallel, all EQ flat (maybe treble slightly attenuated). But it's still not quite the sound I like, which is more of a jazz tone. Stringwise, I'm a dyed in the wool Elixirs player. I have had quite a few 5 string jazzes including Fender USA Deluxe, Sadowsky etc and they've never felt as comfortable as the Stingray! As for convincing the better half - luckily that's a problem I don't have to contend with. She understands it is my job!
  3. That's an interesting thought! I'll look into it, thanks!
  4. Thanks - I'll check them out. I guess in the scheme of things 0.5 isn't too much! Thank you!
  5. Thanks for the suggestions everyone! The ATK has never been my cup of tea really - I think I'm a more traditional fender-style bass person. I had a G&L for a while, I did like it but almost too many tonal options!
  6. Hi all! I love the feel of my Stingray 5, and it sounds pretty good too, but I think I'd prefer a more jazz tone than the classic Stingray. I guess I could try and find an HH or get another pickup added to my SR5, but I was wondering if anyone could suggest other basses that share the slightly tighter string spacing on the SR5s which might be comfortable for me? Thanks in advance! Mike
  7. I should have got Jon to install a tracker when I had it built!
  8. Well it's not looking good, but I'll keep my fingers crossed!
  9. Haha, good point. I didn't think about that!
  10. I can't, but I did have the guy's email but no response yet! Thanks very much. I can't believe I sold a bass I had custom made. Madness. Really hope I find it!
  11. Good point! Sold it through basschat to a guy called Will 8 years ago. Met him at South Mimms. I have dropped him an email today but nothing yet!
  12. 8 years ago I made the silly decision to sell a bass I had custom made by Jon Shuker - a 33” red Jazz 5 with block inlays. I found a picture of it on the website and wondered if, by the power of the internet, I could either buy it back or at least know where it ended up! Can anyone help?! 😘
  13. I've actually played this exact bass (only for a few minutes) and while the shorter scale isn't something I'm used to, it sounded big, clear and balanced, felt lovely to play and obviously is in mint condition! I have also played the amazing Rob Allen that Frank Black has replaced this with and I understand the reasons for the sale - they are very different sounding instruments, so it's not necessarily a case of 'better', just 'different'. I think the buyer who gets this will have an absolute bargain - brand new bass with quite a bit off list price!
  14. I'm planning on dropping in enroute to my gig in Birmingham on Saturday - here's hoping for a positive experience, I'm confident it will be
  15. Ah, that's a shame. This is the email I got from BD: Well, it's getting sorted now, but a bit of a pain to get a double bass gigbag to Glasgow from the South East. BD were kind enough to email me a digital copy of my invoice which really helped me out though.
  16. That's impressive. I also bought a mono gigbag from Bass Direct which has started to tear within the warranty period - however I got a brief but polite email saying I'd have to take it up with the distributor, and get my bag posted to Glasgow myself. Would have loved them to take it on for me!

  18. The great Trevor Newnham on bass. Top player, singer and guy!
  19. Great thread! I tour with 'ELO Again'. It's a lot of fun. I transcribed the originals from the records, but we do a couple of tracks with live arrangements, so for those the basslines sometimes differ. For a few of the more uptempo rock and roll ones, I don't play them note for note - keeps it a bit more fresh and exciting. Here's a video I recently made showing my bass rig set up for that gig!
