1. As far as I know, the only difference between old and new is tinted lacquer on the neck, the availability of a maple fretboard, cream rather than white scratchplates and new body colours(?). Oh, and a higher price.
2. Consider it bumped back up................
3. The two guitarists always referred to the S-1 on my Jazz as the loud button. When it's off, it definitely sounds like a Jazz. When it's on, the bass has more thump. But i have too many Jazzes, so this baby is going. Check out about page 6 in the basses for sale thread, posted Jan 13. I have not bumped it up yet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
4. 1. If you play with a drummer, the two of you must develop a musical "bond". Remember, he is human( ), and is not going to be millisecond perfect himself. The drummer and myself in my band have this, and we know what each other is going to do just by looking at each other. 2. I just mentioned this album in another thread, but I find playing along to the Back in Black album by AC/DC keeps my timing up together. If you can play in time all the 8th notes, then you are getting somewhere. 3. Tap your foot!!!!!!! 4. Slow tempos can actually be harder than faster ones.
5. I was going to say Cliff Williams! Always one to ensure what he does whats necessary and doesn't conflict with the guitars. Check out Gimme A Bullet on "Powerage" he doesn't always pump out the 8ths.......But he is always perfectly timed. People think AC/DC play simple things; they do, but they do it WELL. If you can get through playing along to all of the Back in Black album, then you are on your way to being a good bass player.
6. I would like to deaf in the frequency range my wife talks in..........
7. I bought one of those new Behringer Bass Synth pedals over Xmas. (BSY600?) Cost £36 That may cure your urges...... You can make synth bass noises, or set a synth bass drone and play normally over the single note you set. How useful is that? And It won't put you massively out of pocket if you don't like it. Also got a good review in the last BGM magazine.
8. Gibson are now rip offs! The Gibson SG (£399) I bought in 1988 should now be £772; they are now over £1000. The Les Paul Standard (£640) I bought in 1989 should now be about £1200. They've shot up to £1600-1700.....
9. My band has a pair if Mackies capable of 1.5K together, which barely ticks over, and we have a Mackie 800W sub woofer which very rarely even goes to a venue. The PA only handles the vocal mics, so is very within it's limits. We don't mike the drums, unless it is a very big venue, and justifies the subwoofer being there. The two guitars and the bass all rely on backline power (just like the 60's!). I think we rely on the drummer deciding how hard he will hit the drums...... If the 600W PA is full up, you may need more headroom, but if you are a "quiet" band, I'd rely on the drummer's touch.
10. I've corrected my typing error at the beginning of the thread. You're all really not helping, I'm trying to slim down my accumulation of Jazz basses!
11. The Mustang is Japanese, which must be a tick in the box in it's favour.
12. Given the basis that I can comment on basses on this basis....... Given the GAS I suffered over the last year, I would say Japanese product is easily the most consistent, and probably best, on balance. However, even despite the fact that QA (quality control/assurance) regimes outside Japan never reach Japanese levels; (And you have to remember many of the origins of modern quality originated in the US in the 50s), people will always hanker after well known makes from their original country of origin( I'm saying USA here), even if the product is more hit and miss. I am sure this is the case with Fender USA and Mexico, but not with Fender Japan, whose QA is higher. To some extent it is also true with Gibsons vs Epiphones. You will probably find Epiphones, although built to a lower standard, are more consistent than USA Gibsons are. What I am not saying is that China/Indonesia/Korea build necessarily better stuff, but that build potentially more consistent stuff. The simplest alternative word for QA is consistency. Make sense??
13. Well, apart from the Jazz basses, I also have a Gibson Les Paul and a Fender Telecaster! And now I want an SG (again).
14. This where I want to be. Jap Jazz land. I have a MIJ '62 type with a basswood (which is actually lime wood) body, and I have decided that it is the best bass I have, now it has US pickups. So naturally I want another. It's why Im trying to slim down my US/Mex fleet.
15. If you look in the for sale section, I have an MIA Jazz up for sale. Can't decide what to do about this one. It's a 2008 MIA (typo error should be MIM) Jazz, but fitted with a black scratchplate and USA pickups. It has been gigged almost as much as the MIA, but somehow, this cheaper bass has never suffered a knock Should it go so I can get down to 3 basses, and therefore have cupboard room again???
16. I have decided I have far too many Jazz basses, and this one is going, even though I still like it. I seem to be liking MIJ ones more at the minute. It's an American Series S-1 instrument, sunburst, with maple neck/fingerboard. Bought new from Nevada music in Jan 2008, it has a 2006/2007 serial number. Sounds great, typical Jazz, but the guitarists always moaned when the "loud" button (the S-1) was used...... The only damage is a nick in the lacquer on the back of the headstock (done on it's 2nd gig) and ever so slight depression marks from jean studs on the back. *******NOW SOLD******** I am located in Hedge End, near Southampton. drop us line at [email protected]
17. Or you could start with this and build your own: http://cgi.ebay.com/Gibson-2005-Black-SG-S...%3A1%7C294%3A50 I had a go at bidding on this, but it went well over £300 including the shipping, and then you had to factor in duty/taxes and the fact that you had to get the pickips and hardware from somewhere (A chinese EB-3 probably would have been the donor), and a case for it......
18. Blimey, it's a USA made one as well. That is approaching Uber-rare surely? I think they only made them in the States for less than a year. I was expecting a Jap one.
19. http://cgi.ebay.com/Greco-1989-SG-Bass-Win...%3A1%7C294%3A50 Tell a lie, there is one on E-Bay. But the bottom edge is right smashed in.
20. Mr WHUFC, Never heard of either make, but my god they are nice. One problem, they are probably as unobtainable as the Epi I was talking about??????
21. 4. Tha bass was meant to BE 4 STRING !!!!!!!!!!! Adding another one is just confusing.
22. As far as I know, the Elitist EB-3 is a 30.5" scale, rather than the 34" of the Chinese made EB-3. It's also a shame the Chinese EB-0 is bolt-on neck, really. This Elitist version must be a rare beast. And not in production?
23. Looking around for something different to a Fender Jazz, something of a Gibson like feel/sound. I think these Epi EB-3s were made in Japan, but I've never actually seen one. Any of you out there actually own one?
24. The only reason I don't have a Precision is I don't like the size of the neck. I prefer the thin/narrow Jazz neck, especially the 62 Jap reissue neck. I am sloppy and like to damp over the top of the neck with my thumb. Oddly, with guitars I prefer thick baseball bat necks like on Les Pauls, SG specials or 50s type Telecasters. ??
25. I cannot understand why people do not just buy new one and wear it out themselves over 20 years.
