If you read my post closely, I was using `roundabout' as a pun (i.e. a round about) - I've seen footage of Squire playing a Jazz in tour with Moraz on keys (which would have been the Relayer era) - yes, he actually would have used the 8 string Ricky on that track (one of only two ever made like that - the other one belonged to Entwistle!). Chris was recently in hospital with a blood clot in his leg - lets hope he's ok.
Actually, that little section of your post seemed a bit garbled with a typo or two, so I took an educated guess at what you had meant to type. Now that you've clarified, my post seems rather redundant, except for an opportunity to mention the 'potatohead' 8 strings.

They should calm down a bit in a day or two, if they're new. However, if you're used to nickel, they will always sound bright. I've always found TIs a bit subdued anyway, so Rotos will be an even bigger contrast for you. Best just send them to me.

I'm pretty sure that Chris used the Jazz on Parallels live as well, at least on the GFTO tour. His old Tele bass was stolen (Chris mentions this on the Fish Out Water DVD), but has recently been found at auction and bought by a friend of his. Small correction to an earlier post - he didn't use the Jazz on Roundabout in the Relayer era, but an 8 string Rickenbacker.

Looking at the period you're hoping to cover, MR probably played almost as much 12 string as he did bass back then. Perhaps not too much of a challenge if you play guitar anyway, but in many places you'll have some bass pedal parts to play at the same time, although on the whole these are fairly straightforward. MR used to use a lot of different tunings on the 12 string, often changing tuning from song to song (hence Gabriel's stories developing between songs). I really like his basslines. While not as 'in your face' as the likes of Squire or Lee, most of them are reasonably inventive and serve the song well.
I emailed straight away to Ashdown a few days ago, but I have yet to hear a response. I might try again.
Email using their Technical Support page rather than 'Sales'. Unlike most companies, I find that their Technical Support respond much faster to emails than their Sales do.
I thought the majority of your post was quite reasonable but I can't resist a sly tongue in cheek dig at the idea that branding someone a philistine can be done humbly Surely by definition that is a condescending viewpoint and lacking humility by a margin. Sorry.... I'm a pedant, I know.
I'm going to be a pedant too and point out that the Philistines were actually quite advanced in comparison to their contemporary neighbours.
Man....i bought a 1200 pounds bass......sweet jesus
I had to pay £1000 VAT & duty on an instrument last year. I knew it was coming, but it still hurt! Missus went nuts...
I was so bored with their performance I managed to notice that Adam Claypool is now using Aguilar (Looked like a DB750 with a DB410 15) How's he get such a crap sound with such nice gear ?!?!?
Noticed that too, athough there was still an Ashdown head there. He was using Ashdown cabs on their rooftop performance earlier in the day.

I'd be looking to get paid whatever flat rate you agreed for the second gig before you even consider returning for a third. If his take really did increase by a lot, he'll be keen to have you back and should stump up anyway.
I'd say for what you are getting, the price is severely good. When I bought my TC G-Force new, it was pretty much a grand in cost.. and the Line 6 is just a different beast, easily out speccing it. I bought my X3L from GAK, which was a superb deal.. about the same as a few boutique pedals, including the cost of shipping. I'm on the floor with the X3 Live (X3L to abbreviate!) - There are some extra connections on the PRO but to be honest, there really wasnt enough to warrant me buying that.. The Live I think is the better option. (Thats coming from someone who has had a rack system for years!)
Thanks for that. Guitarists in both my bands use excellent TC gear, so I've a lot of respect for it. Is the POD really that good? GAK was one of the places I looked and they certainly seemed to have the best price at the moment. It's rack or nothing for me, as I have some concerns about the solidity of the floor version in the vicinity of large clumsy bass players, band members, occasional crew such as it is, other acts and even audiences. Besides, I already have to contend with a set of bass pedals and a Ground Control midi switcher on the floor as it is.

Got to admit, the X3 Pro looks pretty interesting to me, but the price tag seems a little on the hefty side. Anyone seen any good deals on it lately?

If it was the NCP there, another sign actually has a number you can ring to get someone to let you out. I only know because I've had to use it before...

rotosound strings - need some advice please :)
jonsmith replied to ray_6ao7's topic in General Discussion
A Rickenbacker armed with a fresh set of 66s; there is no better combination in my opinion & the Funkmasters sound great on my Wal. They do lose their tone quicker than many strings, but I like to change my strings pretty regularly (I'm a very agressive player). The best thing would be to try some out and see what you think. The Nickelwound are a little warmer and kinder to the softer frets used by certain other bass manufacturers. Oh and I've used hundreds of Rotos over the past 25 years and never had a duff string yet. -
If you don't have to have a brand spanking new one, then I echo Jon's Rickresource recommendation. A few of my Rickenbackers have been bought either directly from forumites there, or with their - sometimes unbelievable - assistance. Once you register, there's a 'Rickenbackers Wanted' section on there and people will keep an eye out for you.

Try ringing Peter Cook's in London. I don't think they'll have any, but they're a pretty switched on Rickenbacker dealer. For instance, they managed to order me one of the seven 75th Anniversary 4003 basses that came to the UK. If any 4004 s are coming to the UK, I'm sure they'll be able to grab one. If not, they could probably put an order in (though it's a long wait). As soon as they start making a the 4004Cii5 again, I'll be sticking an order in.

I prefer to be on the hi-hat side, partly because I have half a chance of catching the drummer's attention that way, for those magical moments of interplay etc. This is where I normally stand, but with my Dire Straits tribute, I stand to the ride side of the drummer. Originally I think that was because they copied the DS stage setup, but we did try swapping things around. However we all found it weird and the onstage sound was odd for us all too (despite monitors). Fortunately that drummer is watching out for what I'm up to anyway.
I'd get solicitors involved if I were you, if you let this sort of thing go unchallenged there's no knowing where it might end up and your musical integrity could be seriousLy compromised. The good thing about the legal route is that even if you lose the case and you have to write a hefty cheque, you get a cheque in the post the next day for the very same amount. You can't lose.
Yes, but even if legal costs are awarded in your favour, you'll still be out of pocket...

BASSIST WANTED BY PROG ROCK TRIBUTE,SOUTH HANTS
I pm'd too and found a myspace....not a thing.
Not just me then. -
/\ Very good. /\
Ah..... band politics never change do they!
It seems not. I'm in my 40s - thought I was past all that. I've heard on the grapevine that another band member took exception to something - as yet unspecified - I said in an email. However, it seems that the way to deal with this is not to say 'listen old chap, I didn't agree with what you said in that email', but instead to vow never to work with the person again - but don't tell them! I'm too old for that bollocks, frankly, so the idea of working with them has lost its appeal anyway. I really did come on here originally to see what the bass playing job in West London was though, honest.

BASSIST WANTED BY PROG ROCK TRIBUTE,SOUTH HANTS
jonsmith replied to IndigoPilot's topic in Musicians Wanted
Hi Rob, I'm just curious if you got any kind of response from the Indigo Pilots? I didn't from the PM I sent. Not even a 'Bngger Orf!'. -
A small update on this matter, courtesy of the NME: NME - Noise Levels Petition In my opinion, the pointless signing of hoax or misinformed petitions detracts from the impact that could be made by legitimate ones. That's why I witheld my signature from this one.

Isn't it part of Fender's new Relic Range? Comes in a special crispy finish for that 'Hendrix got hold of it at Montery' look and feel...
LOL, hope you didn't find out it was your old band by reading this thread
Sorry, OT to original post, but recently submitted a website advert for a new keyboard player to replace one who wasn't quite working out in one band, but had hired me as a bass player in his other band. Imagine my surprise to find that the advert immediately preceding mine was one placed by him to replace me in the other band (if that makes any sense!). He still hasn't actually told me, but my photos have been removed from their website.

As I've said before Jon, that is such a fine looking bass, especially for a faker. I really like the maple fretboard look too. My apologies for hijacking the faker thread with non-faker information.

phatbass787, just noticed you have a Classic Neo 4x10. any idea how that compares in weight to the ABM 4x10? Thanks Ashdown seem to be doing pretty well for a joke company, appearing in the backline on many a stage. Sure, they seem to do a lot of endorsements, but I'm pretty sure that the likes of Roger Waters, JJ Burnell, Guy Pratt, Mark King & Adam Clayton would be unlikely to use a product for regular performances if they were all as unreliable as seems to be inferred here. To be honest, I started buying Ashdown for the sound. Nothing else sounded so great with my basses before I'd even touched a control on the amp. However I've gigged and rehearsed regularly with either an ABM combo or my main rack/cab setup and found them to be 100% dependable. Just my experience of course, but thought I'd give an alternative view. As for the valve head, I've heard many people say that they wished Ashdown did a valve power amp. Now they're being shot down for doing so, before it has even been built never mind heard. We don't know exactly how the preamp part will be structured, but as the ABM or EVO preamp has been very successful from a sound quality/tone point of view, it seems logical to use that as a starting point. Does look a bit too pricy though!
