1. Cheers folks! Joinmyband looks very promising indeed, but I reckon the old fashioned way of checking out the notice board in local guitar shops might still be my best bet...
2. I'm very close to/in the process of leaving my current covers band due to... let's say 'creative differences' with the singer(apparently, leaning back on your bass amp for a couple of seconds between songs during the third set of a pub gig is now an offence punishable by temper-tantrum... ). Anyway, politics aside, music pays for my food and rent and I can't get by on the ukulele band alone, so I need to find another covers/function outfit sharpish before I'm forced to sell off a few guitars, or god forbid get a 'real' job. I've got a free profile on Musofinder, am hoping to head Curly's/Dawsons in town tomorrow and will probably post in the legendary 'Liverpool Bands' Facebook page, and of course I've posted in the 'bassists available' section on here, but is there anywhere else I could try?
3. I've spent the last year-and-a-bit playing around 4 gigs a week and have another 5 years' gigging experience before that. I've got an excellent (very portable)500W Markbass rig and some nice basses, but more importantly I play to an extremely high standard. I know a vast number of songs from the covers canon and have an excellent ear, both for jamming/changing key to suit singer, and also for picking up new material quickly. Looking for paid session work/or possibly a function band, although I'm thinking acoustic duos may be the way to go as it's a rare thing for a space to come up... So bit of a long shot to get paid work anymore, but if anyone knows anyone....
4. Depends on the shape of the headstock... if it's an authentic fender shape, then go for it, but if not it'll look really tacky.
5. I really like the natural one, although it does look just like a Teisco/Top Twenty skip-outside-your-house special... there's NO WAY I'd be willing to pay that much for one, but then Gibsons are stupidly expensive across the board tbf. The Epiphone guitars selling around the £400-500 mark are much better made then modern Gibsons selling for over twice as much in my (limited) experience.
6. I'm not sure there is a distinction from karaoke, it's all singing in the end, you get singers of different abilities but if it sounds good, it usually is good. Used to work with a singer/guitarist that cut his teeth on the karaoke scene when that was all the rage before open mics took off. I wouldn't say any training or skills are required, just a good ear, plenty of confidence and a lot of practice. Mic technique is essential too but 99.9% of that is common sense; watching out for plosives etc and keeping the right distance. That said, I'm average at best, a more serious singer might have a different view.
7.
Have you got any pics of the board Steve? Ones with pedal(s) on to give me an idea what can fit on there would be ace. I'm in Liverpool and wanting to downsize from my ridiculously huge Flightcase Warehouse XXL board to something compact and more suited to my current needs. Cheers mate, Mike
Ah, here you go, not the best pic in the world but you get an idea how much space it takes up..
8. Sure Mike, think I have a picture of it all together somewhere, I'll have a look now
9.
Westfield's are great in the house..... but you might find the pick up lacks volume when the band kicks in. PLease, someone tell me I am wrong!
The one in mine seems every bit as loud as the DeMarzio model P in my Fender, completely different tone though.. that said will discover it's true colours when the strings on the Westfield have worn in properly, it's got a lovely punk growl at the moment but I'm aware this might be mostly new string 'zing' Didn't Westfield put slightly different pickups in the B-1000 at one point? I seem to remember the pickups having something written on them in gold, a logo or something similar to the SD Basslines series when I first noticed them about four years back..? You can faintly see it in this pic from their website http://www.westfieldguitar.co.uk/westfield/hires/B1000%20Metallic.jpg
10.
You may find that you're actually pleasently surprised by the Westfield's stock pick-ups. I had one a couple of years back and it sounded very P like.
I've just the other week bought one of these Westfield B-1000's from Alyctes on here as a project bass... was going to upgrade the pickup but in my opinion it matches up very well with the DeMarzio in my Fender P. I think I actually prefer the overall tone of the Westfield! Bought it for a music video I've got soon, so I've put on some massive Wilkinson tuners, black Geddy-style inlays and committed the ultimate crime of adding a 70's Fender logo. The black blocks work really well on mine, although I think one or two might be a bit wonky... Looks amazing for what I paid for it all though, and I've used it for a couple of gigs already with no problems whatsoever
11.
You've got to be at LIPA I studied for two years there before I dropped out, for a lot of reasons really but mostly because of the dawning realisation that I wasn't getting anything out of Uni that I couldn't be doing on my own. There is an upside to studying at a music college in as much as it affords you a decent set of contacts for later life, but then you've got to ask yourself whether those contacts you have in your phone could have simply been compiled through your own hard work and diligence working hard freelancing as a musician by yourself. None of the graduates from my year are necessarily doing any better than I am, most are struggling along doing almost exactly what I'm doing which is doing the best youcan to make ends meet.
Originally really wanted to go to LIPA but was rejected at the first stage as my demo apparently wasn't good enough... ended up at Hope. Stigma-wise I'm genuinely not sure which is worse! Only really in it for the student loan now, without that I'd have dropped out a long time ago... one left to go, and after the amount I've just spent on a new PA system for my uke band it's going to be like xmas has come early!
12. I'm 21 and I've been working toward a career in music for about four years now, it's finally starting to pay off. Last summer I declined staying with my parents in Shropshire and managed to pay food rent and bills etc with the cash I was making from gigs- it's difficult sometimes when your next meal depends on your last gig but at the same time extremely rewarding. Ambient's music college have the right idea with the portfolio approach, the secret is definitely in being able to cover all the basses(aha...)... I'm currently just about bothering with the third year of a music degree which is increasingly looking like a total waste of time and money, due to an apparent rather snobbish total lack of respect for popular music in all but a select few lecturers... I'd much rather be being taught how to not be screwed over by the scumbag running a pub round the corner that's just offered you an unpaid 'audition' gig then be taught repeatedly for three years how Beethoven is the best thing to ever happen to anything I used to practice roughly eight hours a day but nowadays it's closer to one or two as I'm out gigging on average 4-5 nights a week with my covers band, ukulele orchestra, duo, or sometimes hosting/co-hosting an open mic(when I can get one that is, they're absolutely EVERYWHERE in Liverpool at the moment). I've appeared on a couple of small-scale music videos for a local TV station as a guitarist as well, with a few more in the offing. Hoping to get more function work with the covers band soon, if I can break out of the pub circuit I'll be set
13. My 2009 MIM was the bass that converted me to Precisions(well, in my current band anyway...)... had been a jazz man up to that point but it just fits in the mix better, and the chunky neck hugs my left hand reassuringly to stop me from overplaying(too much) when I get bored in the middle of Stand By Me or whatever... Also I like the 70's logo much better then that awful silver one they used up to that point
14. Just bought a Westfield p bass project off Mike, a pleasure to deal with and the bass was sent very rapidly, highly recommended!
15. Absolute tune and a boss bass part(not to mention a belter of a guitar solo!), well known enough too, but probably a bit too heavy for anyone that doesn't recognise it... +1 to Welcome to The Jungle(or possibly Night Train..?), especially if you're after that style but are trying to avoid playing the obvious Gn'R/Slash tune...
16. Hi all, decided to ditch my bass pedals as I've no use for them playing covers, so instead I'd rather just sell them off and use the cash to upgrade one of my project basses, or trade for a bass/guitar/guitar amp/bass bits for a project... I'd normally put up pictures but as they're pedals I'll just put the prices up and if anyone's interested I'll pm them pics to show condition. Generally speaking they're in the kind of condition you'd expect s/h pedals to be in i.e. all working but possibly a small chip or two in the paint, or the rubber underneath has been removed for use with a pedalboard(however I can always superglue them back on MDP-style if this is a problem...) Here's a rough list: EHX Micro Q Tron (boxed, rubber pads underneath replaced with velcro) SOLD EHX Big Muff (USA version, boxed, light scratches to black part around the switch on top, feet still attached) -£45 Boss OC-3 Octave(rubber still attached underneath) -SOLD Boss ODB-3 Bass Overdrive(rubber underneath crudely replaced with velcro) -£45 Boss CEB-3 Bass Chorus(rubber underneath crudely replaced with velcro) -£40 And finally a tweed pedalboard/pedal case, according to the original ebay listing spec is as follows; " 2 Catches Faux Leather Handles & Edges Red Interior Internal Dimensions: 450mm x 300mm x 75mm Removable lid for gig use" -basically as new, yours for £25 (collection only) Trade offers and general offers welcome! Prices include postage to UK unless stated otherwise, and of course collection is welcome if you're near the Merseyside area... other then that if you've any questions feel free to ask, thanks for looking!
17. Definitely great stuff. No experience of the bass pickups, but the guitar humbuckers are better then most you'll find under £100. Hardware is excellent too, although the tuners on my Icon Les Paul copy are a bit looser then I'd like... the massive vintage Wilko tuners on my Jazz are perfect though!
18. Playing for the track in question aside, it's all about keeping it simple. I tend to just decide whether the song would sound best with a Precision, Jazz or my Westone Quantum(much grittier tone I've lately come to prefer). I did a session once with a vintage modified jazz bass going into a lovely Fender Bassman valve head through a Purple Marshall 4x12 guitar cab which sounded boss (http://www.myspace.com/dapperoverture), however since then I've tended just to DI, for me there's nothing like the pure sound of a decent bass going straight into the desk. Here's my most recent recording, this time just the Quantum straight into an old analogue desk https://soundcloud.com/uke-hunters/the-cave
19. SOLD. I'm looking to sell my PA... this is also listed on Gumtree and Preloved but because BC'ers are awesome I'll be asking £20 less on here, and still open to offers as it needs to go ASAP to fund the Mackie speakers I've just agreed to buy off a mate. In many respects I'm a lazy, lazy man, so I've simply copied and pasted the Gumtree ad below for your viewing pleasure... I'd normally be happy to have a go at post/courier-ing stuff but with this I'd rather it all went to somebody that could take it off my hands in person at once... cheers for looking! Looking to start hosting open mic/acoustic nights in small venues? Need to announce stuff? Got a band and need a way to hear vocals in your rehearsal space? Look no further! Open to offers as this must go ASAP to raise funds and space! Here for sale at a frankly stupid price is my complete PA system, bought second hand/brand new separately about three weeks ago at a cost of around £250. All works perfectly, I'm especially fond of the Peavey head as their USA made stuff was miles ahead of the competition in the price range when it was made. Peavey XM-4 150W PA head/powered Mixer 2x Kustom 120W passive 8" speakers- small but mighty(enough for small venues and rehearsal spaces anyway..)! 2x BRAND NEW ONLY USED ONCE speaker stands 2x BRAND NEW ONLY USED ONCE 6 meter Neutrik/VanDamme speaker cables I'll also throw in a cheapo vocal mic(but unfortunately I've not not a spare lead for it...) OPTIONALLY I can throw a Carlsbro vocal mic in for an additional £15. Due to the runaway success of my ukulele band The Uke Hunters I'm upgrading my gear to cope with bigger venues, so this PA has to go to raise funds.
20. Mad that. He must have some idea what it is to be starting at that price though, just seems kinda lazy.
21. Is this one of those pink Westfields with the maple fretboard? Pics would be great, been after one of those for ages...
22. +1 for all the stuff about his work with Chickenfoot, some good solid playing and a great tone, especially on the Chickenfoot III... can't see him replacing Wolfgang anytime soon.
