1. Nofx - 'The Decline' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tHG8dZKyEqE Great song to train to - fast paced with loads of excellent drumming and bass. Highly recommended!
2. Ah - I think i'd only describe myself as competent after a few more tweaks. I shall be looking for opportunities though
3.
Has the intonation coped with the change of strings and truss rod tweak?
You see, this is just the kind of question to fill my newbie head with doubt again If you mean are all the strings relatively in-tune at different locations on the neck then I think so, if you mean something more esoteric then I don't know...
4. I'll tell you what happens when I check again in t' morning For now they're great - really good feel to them
5. I like this site a lot The 'convict shots' are a cool idea, and it makes you look mean and cool. Nicely done
6. So... after more than 1000 hours of playing on the same set of 'stock' strings I changed my warwicks to a set of Rotosound 66 heavy gauge (50-110's). After fitting them I noticed that the neck was far more bowed than before so I bit the bullet and got out my truss rod tool and gave it a 1/8 turn (maybe slightly more, my neck was *very* bowed!) Now it's fab - I've lowered the action anyway on the E and A strings which were a little high, and checked for buzzes and rattles. All seems well. *More* than well actually and I'm excited that I might be able to control the truss rod if I need to after hearing so many scare stories of people ruining their necks. Great new bright funky sound, and some cool looking red ended strings to boot! I'll re-check in the morning to see how much it 'beds in', but for now it plays like a dream. Is 1000 hours a lot of playing time from a set of strings? I've no idea!
7. The changes aren't dramatic - but the action is slightly different and the tuning is out. I haven't got into the habit of tuning before each practice session as when I used to do this, it became clear that it wasn't necessary. Obviously it *is* now. I don't keep my basses in their gig bags - I have them on stands so i can pick them up whenever I want - or walk past - etc. Besides, they're beautiful works of art and I want to be able to see them
8. Has anyone else noticed the effects of this recent humid/wet weather on their basses? My Thumbs seem to go out of tune much more quickly with the fluctuation is humidity and temperature to the extent that I'm checking tuning before each session now when before it was rare if I checked tuning weekly.
9. Rotosound 66's on my fretted and Rotosound 88's (black nylon flats) on my fretless. Both sound (and feel) great. I've not experimented much mind you...
10. Cool/fashion is only important in what it does to the price, and getting the name in front of people so they are aware and can at least try them out. Other than that, I suspect most of us aren't affected by 'coolness'. (Even as I write that, I'm doubting it! ) It must be a lot to do with past experiences and influences: when I think of a bass, I always picture a Thumb - always have. I think it's because I used to walk past a bass shop on Denmark St and see one in the window many years ago, and it was the picture I had in my mind ever since whenever someone mentioned bass. The fact that they sound so funky just cemented that. Doesn't stop me trying other (cooler?) basses out though.
11.
LOL why should that be? Most of the followers/likes we have on Twitter and FB are either bass/gear companies or BC members :DPS I will eventually get round to following back all of you guys. I need to do that in stages in order to keep track of progress.
I think you took me seriously!
12. aren't you slightly worried that this site will be invaded by weirdos and riffraff, and water down the otherwise normal and sane group that are currently resident on here though?
13. Just opened a new pack of Rotosound 66's to put on my bass and lo and behold, there's no 'E' string! There *is* an 'end' of the string in the envelope, but that's it! What on earth is going on? *tut*
14.
I haven't got a dog. My cat makes a quick exit once I start playing. next door's dogs are a different matter though.... They do not, not, not, like the low end.
that's cats for you - *very* choosey!
15. So, each time I go and practice my bass (in my out-house), my dogs - once they hear the bass - come and listen to me and lie *on* my feet whilst i play. This isn't just them following me because if I go to my practice room and don't play, they don't come over... Anyone else think their dog(s) listen/like their bass sounds?
16. I wouldn't describe the Rotosound 88's difference as 'subtle' they're soft and velvety and completely different from Warwick round wound. But I'd definitely recommend experimenting - if you're into fast moving rock, these strings wouldn't work for you at all...
17.
Beautiful fretless Thumb Bass, and I love the look of the black strings! Enjoy!
Ahh yes, my new love Given how good the strings are on this bass, I'm lusting for a 5 string... imagine the B string!
18. I only have soft gig bags so I lie them down on their backs when I get back from a gig and then - in the morning - straight back in the rack(s) so I always have them at hand for some noodlin'
19. Actually, it clearly *is* helping because you're not going to forget sus7 and minor7 differences are you? (every cloud has a silver lining)!
20. I agree with the lack of Warwick lovin' on here, so I'm uploading some of my Thumb 4 string B.O. fretless with Rotosound 88 black nylon flat wounds
21. well that's weird then! the sus7 should be A-D-E-G and the minor 7 A-C-E-G... so they should also have the open G on both, and there's a missing E on the second (?)
22. On the 'sus' isn't the third (the C#) dropped and replaced by a D - that's what 'sus' means? which means the first chart is right?
23. They're not quite the same though - the second chart has no open G string, and a C (a it should for a minor)
24.
+1. Do I detect a little testiness and insecurity among some posters here ?
No - just a bit of light banter - I was a guitarist who switched
