1.
You mean someone who started out on guitar and switched to bass like Macca or Lemmy?
Only if they are very, very, very, lucky... what do you think?
2. They'll probably get just the 'bassist' they deserve so no loss there methinks
3.
Don't be lazy! This thread correctly assumes that at least some pro-activeness on the part of readers can be expected. Buy that bass. Buy those strings. Play. best, bert
yes, quite! Blimey, do you want me to do *everything* for you? You'll not be disappointed, so GET THE BASS!
4. I feel for you (even though it looks like the 'pearly queen' of basses)... good luck!
5.
Back pup...love it. Its partly his technique but I like this bass. I bet they are nigh on £3K now.
£2,349 Trust me, this is *today's* price as I've received a quote
6.
Looks so sexy too!
Oh yeah... but trust me, the looks aren't even close to the sexiness of the sound!
7. So, my Rotosound Trubass 88's (black nylon flat wounds) arrived today and I fitted them on my fretless thumb... The first new set of strings on my fretless, replacing the Warwick 'stock' strings. Oh my god, what a sound! Low, soft, rumbling 'thunder in the distance' sustain that goes on and on and seemingly wont stop until the universe dies in heat death. Jazz songs (killing me softly - roberta flack) are *so* smooth I had to play it at least 5 times. I'm stunned. Why didn't anyone tell me what this would be like??
8. Practicing hard... can't smile and play at the same time (that's performances buggered then!)
9. lots of great advice - i feel brave enough to watch some youtube links/read a few web guides and 'have a go'. I suppose if I muck it up without actually over tightening, I can always go to a shop and have an expert look at it
10. Hi Mike That've very kind - if I don't get any earlier offers I will definitely ask
11. ... with showing me how I can check my truss rod tension when I change to different gauge strings? I've not done this before and I'd really like some advice from someone who knows about this kind of thing so I don't ruin my neck! I'm happy to travel (anywhere in gloucestershire, worcestershire, oxfordshire etc.) and will buy you a beer (or whatever) for your troubles... anyone?
12.
Spanking, tension, rods, thickness ... only you can decide whether to seek specialist help or take care of it yourself...
now, now, we're only just past the watershed!
13.
The strings you want to put on are lighter (40-100) than the ones you've got on there now (45-105), not heavier.
*doh* of course! thanks for the advice - i'll see if i can track someone down for some help
14. So... for christmas (yes, that long ago) my folks were kind enough to buy me a spanking new set of strings. Thing is, they're Rotobass 40-60-80-100 gauge, and my bass came with standard 45-105's. I'm guessing that the truss rod is set for the standards, so will I need to have it looked at if I put the thicker strings on? Is there a significant difference in tension? Can I do it myself, or do I need a bass specialist, or any old guitar shop?
15. And to quote Tolstoy, who had happiness pretty much wrapped up, but only just before he died(!)... "I have lived through much, and now I think I have found what is needed for happiness. A quiet secluded life in the country, with the possibility of being useful to people to whom it is easy to do good, and who are not accustomed to have it done to them; then work which one hopes may be of some use; then rest, nature, books, music, love for one’s neighbor — such is my idea of happiness. And then, on top of all that, you for a mate, and children perhaps. — What more can the heart of a man desire?" The details may be slightly different for all of us, but you get the gist of what he means...
16. A lot of very good advice here. Cycling - or any physical activity that you enjoy - is worth its weight in gold, and to be honest is probably *the* most important thing in keeping you sane, happy, and fulfilled. When you're physically challenged and fit, many other issues are easier to deal with. What comes next depends on your own personal thoughts and feelings. At the end of the day, if you are healthy, and have family and friends who care for you, and who you care for most other things become less important. It may not seem that way now, but believe me it's true. Unfortunately most of us realise this late in life - but it *is* true. Good luck and remember that health, and the love of family and friends, is really all that matters.
17. well, to my shame, I don't know *how8* to post a picture... are there any guides anywhere?
18. on the warwick thumb fretless - the dots are ON the pitch but when you look down you'll see that when you're on the dot, it *looks* like the finger tip is slightly in front (well, it does to me anyway), so this might be what you're finding? At the end of the day it'll be down to experimentation and a good ear or tuner! Stick with it though, the sound is unique and very different to fretted
19. warwick straplocks are not 'standard' but they seem to be pretty bullet-proof (famous last words?)
20. I'm insured with Allianz... they seem ok - they'd recently paid out to my bass teacher whose bass and amps were recently stolen (mind you, the fact that his gear was stolen just before appearing on prime time BBC 1 TV might have had something to do with it!)
21.
He's run out of 'e's I think.
bugger fart bugger - i didn't even notice... (and *breathe*)
22. Late bloomers bloom longer - welcome aboard and have fun
23. welcome welcome - I warn you that they're all friendly, but quite, quite, mad!
