Pardon my ignorance... but what do you mean by "the sound of them"? Do they have a characteristic sound?
All strings have their own characteristic sound. Typically, acoustic basses come with bronze phosphor strings like their guitar counterparts, and they're fine if you want a bright sound like a downtuned acoustic guitar. Most people buy an acoustic bass to closer emulate the tone of a double bass however, and for that you will want to use flatwounds or tapewounds.

Best way to get lots of amplified volume

My Breedlove has a phase switch on the preamp which really helps, so if yours has a similar button be sure to try it out! A parametric EQ can help to notch out a particularly troublesome frequency also. -
Hmm, I've always wanted to try one of these and a white one does sound nice!
-
Often the preamp can have a built in phase switch to help cut out feedback. I hate the sound of them with steel/bronze strings, but with flats or nylons epecially on a fretless you can get a very double bass like sound out of them.
New strings.
Only if you plan on funking them up by keeping a KFC bucket on standby - I hate the sound of new strings! -
Cheaper options are the older Korg Pandoras - loads of them on eBay usually! Does your Mac have a line in? I used to practice through my PC by just plugging it into the line input, then mix it with audio output from Windows Media Player (with the bass turned down on the EQ). You'll get better tone with an active bass or with a buffered effects pedal in the signal path due to the low impedance input on the line-in socket, but it will be usable by plugging a passive bass straight in!

I can only find these here: http://www.allparts.uk.com/products/mini-switch-dpdt-on-on-on But £12.80 a pop is a rip off especially since I need two! I can get standard toggles for £1.21 from Farnell's, but does anyone know where I could get some black ones at all? Thanks in advance!

Since the bass is usually mixed dead centre, could you add an algorithm to subtract elements panned left and right? This used to be the old trick to remove vocals, it was a push button on some tape decks!

I've heard of people recording vocals in the bathroom because of the natural reverb, but I don't think there'd be enough rehearsal space around the bath for an entire band. I recommend putting the drummer in the bath itself. Also, you may struggle to find an electrical socket to plug your amps into.

Do you live within driving distance of Bass Direct? Your best bet witted be to head there and try both out! There may be other shops that stock both basses, maybe the Gallery?
Shame he (probably) didn't use them on the last album coz his tone on that was utter pish.
What?! I thought the bass tones on 13 sounded great!

The PiBass has been out for a while as far as I knew but the Rootmaster and Five 15 heads are new to me: http://www.musicradar.com/us/news/bass/namm-2014-ashdown-unveils-rootmaster-range-and-pibass-amps-592387/3

I would be most interested in this but the decals put me off. It's nice that she has a tattoo that means something to her and she wants it on her bass, but I don't want it on mine I'm afraid!

Ah, so we have separate KOSMOS A-Sub and KOSMOS C-Psycho controls, now it all makes sense! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCkfjL_NH00

From the Peavey Tour 700 web page:
These amps contain a Kosmos B Subharmonic Generator which allows the user to synthesize a note one full octave below the note you are playing.
Oh dear. This sounds like the exact OPPOSITE of what I thought it would do, I was expecting it to produce a harmonic ABOVE, to help your speakers, not octave below to destroy them! Reading that new copy again:
Peavey’s proprietary KOSMOS® bass enhancement provides increased bass impact, while the exclusive psychoacoustic low-end enhancement adds bass without overburdening speakers – a testament to Peavey’s technology-driven reliability.
OK, perhaps KOSMOS is just an octaver, and the psychoacoustic enhancement is a separate feature that has no name? Ok Peavey, you have confused me now! I'm following the equivalent thread on TB where a Peavey rep is posting, so have asked on there. Interestingly, somebody mentioned that some Crown power amps, owned by Peavey, actually feature the Waves Maxxbass DSP, so perhaps I wasn't far off the mark after all!

Great little boutique orange phaser, no low end loss. Not had an MXR phaser before so not sure if this is based on the 45 or the 90, but it is very subtle compared to my Small Stone. Very warm lush sounding phase. I want to find something that has the intense phase sound of the Small Stone, but with the clarity of this thing, so the search continues (best compromise I found so far was Small Stone in a blender). [s]£85 now £75[/s] - Sold! Buy it - it has a picture of a spaceman on the top. We’ve also thrown in a “Level” knob so you can spend less time worrying about volume drop and more time following your muse. Even at the most extreme settings, the Nebula IV offers nothing but useful, musical colors and tones. From Univibe-like pulses to a subtle VH-ish wash and all points in between, the Nebula IV delivers warm, rich phasing fit for any musical setting and is guaranteed to take your tone into the next dimension.
