1. Hi Garry, I'm one of those much maligned basschat deviants who knows damn well that he can tell the difference between an ash and an alder P-bass tone with stock pickups, still anyone is entitled to their own opinon, so i suggest you take your own council on this matter. Mind you, it's true that you can get whatever style pickups you want nowadays, and that will have a stronger influence on your sound..... For what it's worth, my opinion is: I have 2 ash P-basses (one Lakland Skyline Bob Glaub, one that I put together) and 3 alder ones, (two Fenders (one MIJ, one MIA) and one Warmoth) with one maple fretboard, one macassar ebony fretboard and three rosewood fretboards between them. I can't tell any difference in sound between the fretboards, but traditionally rosewood is supposed to sound softer. The ash bodies definately have a little more attack and sustain and more mid-range 'honk', while the alder ones have a softer more balanced sound. I like them both, but I'd personally go for alder if you wanted the "classic" P-bass sound. I put simple tone circuits in most of my P-basses, and I use 0.47 uf Orange Drop capacitors, and they work fine (close to stock fender 0.5 uf).
2. I'm surprised you are not getting more love for this amazing bass. Have a free bump on me.

4. I thought that JV, SQ and E (plus A,B,C) were from the same production run and certainly look identical to me when I look at the dimensions, headstock logos and hardware. i thought that E-series are just more common and the last of the production run, and therefore worth slightly less. Maybe you are right though and they are worth the same as other MIJ basses I don't know. Any other Jap afficionados can help me?
5. I hated GAK. The mail order concern is a dingy warehouse next to Quik Fit in Brighton. It's run by bored and unhelpful teenage girls. In my experience, they will advertise something as being in stock for next day delivery and then actually get it drop-shipped to you, which can take weeks. The shop in Brighton's lanes though, is excellent. Chris the Bass saleman is a really chilled, friendly and knowlegable chap (with some impressive face furniture), and they have a good range of basses, and amps just about anything notable except exotic stuff right off the peg. Gak, then is two completely different concerns and two completely different experiences.
6. It's a commonly held internet myth. In 1985 there were 4 different MIJ series, A, B, C and E. E-serials were currently being used by the USA basses of the time as well. When the Fender USA factory shut down in 1985 to move to Corona, there was no USA production of P-basses for a time. E-series were the export basses made to fill in this deficit (hence the same serial as the USA series). legend has it that because these were destined for the Western (and particularly American) market, that these were of better build quality, and that some had USA hardware (except machines). I have no idea if this is true and nobody (including the Fender forums) seems to have an answer, but you'll see it bandied around on forums, particularly by guitarists. This is supposedly why E-series is sought after above many other early MIJ basses.
7. I have this roadworn MIJ E-series precision for trade (1985). People keep asking if I will take cash, but I genuinely have no idea of a value. This U-series (~1995) just went for £450.00 on the for sale forum, but is admittedly in lovely condition. I thought mine was worth no more than that, maybe less. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/175174-sold/ JV and SQ go for silly money, but apart from a few decals (and possibly that mine has USA pickups being an E-series) seem identical to mine in every way, but I know mine is not worth as much. Will mine go up in value to match? This is a pretty dinged old bass (ahem, I mean "Roadworn vintage bass with Mojo"), but plays and sounds very well. What do I quote for a price without pissing people off or ripping myself off? it's here: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/175717-e-series-precision-1985-for-trade-with-soundclip/ Thanks for any advice!
8. My first ever bass was one of these. At the time, they were rated better than a Fender. ++Awesome++ bass, beautifully made!
9. I'd rather trade if poss. Waiting on 2 people who have said they are interested, but its still available.
10.
These early Fender japan necks are some of the best. good luck with the sale. I have a similar looking and slightly earlier fender japan build and if it's anything like in the slightest it's a killer bass
Thanks mate! it is an amazing bass alright. Really sweet tone and like you say, a great neck.

12. Sorry Ash, I'd just spend the cash difference on beer and curry and have a less valuable guitar,,,,
13. I'm really sorry to post this again after pulling it, my missus wanted me to sell it to pay off the credit card after buying a new USA Precision, but when I found out how badly the USA sounded and played compared to this, I was so gutted that she felt sorry for me and said i could keep it (which is why i pulled the last ad). Now after the new MIA bass got a Wizard pickup installation, a new wiring job and a visit to the luthier to get the neck tweaked and the frets filed, I'm willing to let this MIJ bass I have had for years go. The only reason I'm getting rid of it is that it's the wrong colour/fretboard combination for my tribute band, and I no longer see the need to own 5 precison basses as I can only play them one at a time. I still think this is by far the better bass though, and you are welcome round mine to try them side-by-side too! So for trade is a beautiful-sounding and pretty roadworn 1985 vintage E-Series MIJ precision bass. I'd be interested in a decent Jazz Bass, or something interestingly different from a P-bass, but no 4-string fretlesses as i already have one. Negotiations on 5 and 6-strings welcome too. I do have the original Fender bridge by the way (albeit with one seized saddle screw), but it currently has a Gotoh-style one fitted. Everything else is original. If you want to hear what it sounds like, this clip was recorded last year played live in the studio with a classic rock band I was playing with then. Merton

Just sold my EBS Multicomp to Merton. Paid straight away, great comms and very trusting. Proper gent and a pleasure to deal with, and keeps up my faith that Basschatters are a cut above!
15.
not professional enough to spell "professional" correctly though? lol ...Sorry dude, I just had to... I know it was just a slip of the keypad! Good luck finding your bassist! Oh, have a bonus bump on me too!
Shob gite.
16. I'm posting this for my mate from my last band. He's 50 y/o, a bit of a shredder. He's a songwriter but will play covers happily, and a sublimely good guitarist. Although he loves to shred, he can play any rock/blues style to a world class level. He has played his music on Radio One's "Friday Rock Show" and was featured on the John Peel show back in the day. He's a really, really nice guy, and very reliable and enthusiastic. He'd consider anything, but mostly likes to play classic rock and metal, covers or originals. If you want to see him play: http://www.youtube.com/user/Greenshredman#g/u Let me know if you are interested and I'll pass it on. If you contact him direct tell him Mark sent you.
17. I paid £650.00 for mine s/h. Wouldn't sell it though.
18. These are amazing, bet they sound as good as they look too, Was just saying how hugely better my E-series sounds than my 2011 MIA.
