1. Well, the latest ones have brass bridges, brass nuts, wengé necks... save for the pickups and tuners, they're truly close to the vintage-handmade ones. Except they're not handmade. Were the vintage Wicks better? Not sure. Weaker truss rods, no volute, no neck reinforcements, heavier, the old nut often rattled (JAN1)... I've had my share of issues. The modern Wicks aren't bad basses for sure. It's really a matter of taste. I do prefer that "handmade feel" and the feel of wengé. But, guess what, my main bass is a 2009 Thumb NT5... GLWS, I wish I could buy one.
2. Our not-so-furnished bandcamp but hey, still better than nothing : http://oldscool.bandcamp.com/
3. I bought a bass from Tom. It arrived fastly and safely. Unfortunately, I wasn't truly satisfied with the bass. Hopefully, as Tom had told me beforehand, I could send it back to him, in this very hypothesis. So did I. I just sent the bass back to Tom and he gave me a full refund. Imho, it's in that kind of case you realise you're dealing with a great person. Highly recommended.
4. Hi there gentlemen. I'd like to introduce you to my band, or, rather, the band I'm playing in : Oldscool. Founded in 2009, I joined it in July 2012. Based in the Champagne region, France, however, we're more into beer. As our name tells, we're playing rather old-school music, but with modern influences and a progressive touch. Think of Black Sabbath, Metallica, Pink Floyd, Scorpions... Nothing über-original, nor technical but we're having fun, and that's what matters the most. Thanks, Paul.
5. Traded. Thread can be closed / deleted.
6. Thanks guys. Price lowered! 1300€ / £1044. G.A.S attack.
7. Bien le bonjour / Hello comrades bassists. As my addiction to Wengé is too strong to play a bass without this particular wood, I'm putting my Warwick Thumb NT5 on sell. Right now, because of electronic issues, the bass is at the local Luthier's shop. The preamp will probably be changed. But once I get it back fixed, I'll be ready to ship it to whom wants to buy it. I'm asking 1300€ / £1044 for it, but the price is negotiable (to a certain extent, I need enough money to afford my annual needs of Wengé wood). It comes with a heavy Rockcase Flight-case, so I can ship it. I'm located in France. Thanks, Paul. 8. My Thumb NT5 from le year 2009 :
9. £1100 is a very good price for a 5str Dolphin from the early nighties. Now it's up to you. Warwicks in general (especially the old ones) are very responsive and quick on the attack, as Luke says, because of the use of Wengé.
10. Maybe it's Wengé. It has a particular feel and sound. Very dry, percussive and growly. If you're used to more traditional woods, you might be surprised, to say the least, by it. Especially since you got the same feeling with the Ibanez prestige series which also use Wengé for neck and fretboard. I would still go for it, because it's one of the best sounding bass I've ever heard (with Mec electronics though, I guess a 91s has Bartolini Pu's and preamp). But that's just me.
11.
Petard means to "backfire" so I gues it's intended to be the band of farters as the French use the word "pet" as fart and, they do love a jokey name over here. Well certainly in this bit of France.
Well, I'm French and, as far as I know, "être en pétard" means to be angry so...
