2.
The gauges are because they are supposed to be balanced tension. If you look at the tensions of a standard set of bass strings, normally the D is the highest and string tension reduces on the lower strings. You are going to need to increase the weight in order to get closer to equal tension from one string to the next.
Thank you - this makes perfect sense. I noticed before how the D always seems to have the highest tension in the whole set, be it 4 or 5 strings, and regardless of whether the set as a whole is "soft" or "hard", so it's intriguing to see it's not just me the fumbling middle-aged newbie bassist noticing that Slightly OT, but I'm now curious - any particular reason why that happens?
3.
Or should I have said "Roll up roll up, getcher qualidee back to front basses here..."
4. Aw, you should have said hi! It was a totally friendly gathering of bass-mad BCers Please do join us next year (I am so going to do this all over again if they allow me to! )
5. All the best with your new job, Garey! It was a pleasure to talk to you as Warwick's representative Please make sure you change your account name but stay on the forum, we'd miss you if you disappeared.
6.
The Bass remains in the Wild West Midlands then... Anyone gonna pick this beastie up? It got an outing in sunny West Bromwich last night and is probably on the way to The Crown Inn, 23 Main St, Heather, Leicestershire, E67 2QP, next Saturday. PLEASE let me know if you are gonna pick it up there as I'm hoping to travel light next week and if no one throws their hat in the ring, it'll stay at home. C'mon people, this thing needs to get moving!
I'll make sure to tweet this post of yours tomorrow. Keep up the good work!
7. For those Londoners/West Londoners who may be interested in taking part or simply attending, the event has set the date for this year. This is from their Facebook page:
So, after a well earned break Oxjam Chiswick is back for 2013! It's Saturday 19th October. So if you'd like to play or get involved, let us know, we couldn't do it without you. x
http://www.facebook.com/OxjamChiswick Last year we saw Kit Richardson play in one of my locals, and several other bands play in other pubs and venues in the neighbourhood. Good stuff.
8.
Wow that Ellefson isolated bass playing is pretty damn fine.
Dave "Megadeth" Mustaine has always surrounded himself with awesome, rock-solid bass players, even when he himself was at his junkie-est and sloppiest. Probably exactly for that reason - as well as David Ellefson's excellent song-writing skills. When Ellefson left the band for a few years, James Lomenzo took his place, and boy, he may sound a bit soulless but he's nothing short of awesome too. I met him at one of the Music Shows a few years ago for a chat and also saw him playing there.
9. Daz - LOL, I'm sure you're not the only one in that predicament So far I'm glad to say I do tend to remember bands and events after I've seen/been at them, but you never know what will happen as time goes by Gary - thank you, and all others who enjoyed the blog. I'm hoping to tempt even more Basschatters to turn up at the show next year and make it another memorable BC Day
10.
I already made a post asking about a lefty thread and got no replies. There should at least be a lefty thread for general discussion. Ive given up hope.
Not sure what your complaint is about, given the posts above?
11. Thanks knowing myself, it was probably lucky that I didn't have too much time to spend taking photos, or I would have ended up boring you all to death with a 400-picture album...
12. My pleasure, 3below. Incidentally, the photo below may raise a smile in those of you who, like me, are addicted to attending music shows. I've been so for nearly 20 years and I've got the evidence!
13. Haha! We-e-e-lll.... I don't want to know! He'll always be a metal god no matter what
14. LOL no, but you can be sure of one thing - it wasn't me. Those luscious German-made Warwicks or the Ortega acoustic lefty, on the other hand...
15. Thanks! It was immense fun. I really hope we can do the same, or something even better, next year
16. As some of you may have guessed, we are having no end of problems posting my blog on Basschat's system: no matter what we try, it never seems to work. So, while we wait to see if, in the end, we'll be able to add it to Basschat's entries under the Blog tab, feel free to have a look at it here - before we move on, forget the LBGS even happened, and the blog becomes obsolete. The blog basically gathers together most of the photos I've scattered round here and on FB, and adds a few, together with some names. http://wp.me/p2ZbyY-1g The layout is deliberately very basic and no-frills (I kept it simple with a view of converting it to Basschat's layout). You can click on photos to enlarge them. I hope the blog can stay on this site in some guise, to help us remember that awesome weekend \m/ \m/
17. For those who haven't seen Colin 's post on FB:
Hi all - Hamster here. There will be a little downtime tomorrow morning while a few more tweaks are done. Hopefully one of the tweaks will be a new marketplace forum for those of you shopping specifically for a sinister bass!
18. You may be confusing it with the Earl's Court site. http://www.stracointernational.com/News/849/Olympia-two-refurbishment-completed.html And according to this article, it's all wonderful there... 19. Thank you Chris and Colin! And I agree that Dan's suggestion is great too.
20. I haven't done any second hand buying yet (only factory-new cheapos so far) so I'm probably the wrong person to give an opinion, but my impression is that having a separate lefty section would make things easier both for us lefties and for righties - who would want to avoid being distracted by and wasting time on offers they're not interested in. And that's despite the lefty marketplace being slower than the righty. Having said that, if the amount of work required to apply the modification on to the website had to be massive, then it probably wouldn't be worth the admins/developers' while. But my vote goes for yes to a lefty subsection.
21. Yes, I think someone at the venue said so.
22. Flickr album from last night's gig: http://www.flickr.com//photos/bluejay_my_photos/sets/72157632936213829/show/
23. I'm working on last night's photos as we speak. It was an awesome gig, full of energy, a finger raised defiantly at cancer and death, with the entire audience supporting him on every note. He had Alison Moyet as a special guest on vox for a couple of numbers during the encore, then he decided to change a string to his guitar on stage in front of us, as the replacement guitar was set up wrongly and had given out horrid feedback - drums and bass kept playing throughout - and it was all a good laugh as well as poignant. When he left the stage for the last time I felt the reality of it hitting me. But, as Jack said, what a way to go. \m/ \m/
