Did Ibanez recently change the SR300 again?
BassTractor replied to BassTractor's topic in Bass Guitars
Thanks, guys. Marvin, does yours have a set of stacked knobs? I'd guess maybe the 3EQ could be recognised by its lacking that, but I don't know or remember anything about it. btw, what's with the filthy avatar? You should be ashamed of yourself, you male shauvinist pig, ruining a perfect ass like that with an apple!! And have you seen the labia on that thing? -
Phew! Thanks to this thread I have now deleted my order for two BF cabs. I feel soo relieved, and am very happy Alex was willing to delete that particular order, and send me two BF strippers instead. Thanks, guys! Wait!

What Wayne says. If you still are going to mismatch actual impedance (2.67 Ohm in this case) with output transformer impedance, then it is normally a better idea to have the cab have less impedance - not more as one would expect due to experience with solid state power stages. That would mean connecting it to the 4 Ohm output. However, I have no idea how flexible the SVT is, and in this case choosing the 2 Ohm output might be better. I know this is of little help, but I thought mentioning the general idea was better than not mentioning it. Maybe a pro chimes in.

Hello Santi, Welcome! Yup, it's nice here. Not as nice as Barcelona, but you may survive anyway. There's a lot to learn here, at any rate. Enjoy! best, bert

Hey Jim, From behind the parapet: Welcome! Low enough? Yup, do share some wisdom, and enjoy the site! best, bert

The whole point of them is that they are to faithfully reproduce what you put into them, especially the EXT, with wide enough frequency range and quick enough cones etc. , and as a result they will do any style, and you decide sound with bass, effects and head, not with the cabs. Remember that if this type of sound quality is all that you're after, the EXT will give that. The NMT is higher rated, at the cost of some detail. Still awesome of course, but still.

Reading about SR300, I saw Ibanez replaced the style sweeper model with a new model last year or so, that had a different 3EQ and new pups (Cap EXF N2 instead of EXF 4F and EXF 4R). Then I read of another possible change recently, but can't find it anymore. So, did they recently change them again? And in any case, me liking the style sweeper a lot when I tried it between 1.5 and 2 years ago, it becoming my main reason for my SR GAS, I'd order a style sweeper model unseen, but would be wary of getting the newer model (though possibly without good reason). Can one visually discern them from each other? Does anyone know what it would say on the box? I'm thinking that shops' limited knowledge, and their webshops' limited updatedness could mean I order a style sweeper model from the description, only to receive a newer 3EQ.

Great stuff, made by people who're blessedly able to relax their sphincters, and breathe naturally. Class!

Modding -- Which Worked? Which Didn't?

Cool story, Happy Jack. -
This is soooo wrong! That bass belongs in my living room! Congrats!

Hi Solomon, Welcome! As to what to say in these things, I think you coped wonderfully well. There's a heading in the Introductions forum that says something like that one can tell a little about oneself and one's gear. Mission accomplished! Enjoy your stay! best, bert

As Barkin indicates, the Peavey solution is not "technically better" than the full Ashdown solution. Do as you say: experiment. Let your ears decide, absolutely not the wattage in this case. What you perceive as louder may be due to a different frequency response and possible compression. It's all good, but just let your ears decide. Have we talked about ears yet? Yeah, the Sub on this MAG head is not that great, as it is very slow. Have you looked into removing the MAG head should you go for the Peavey? It should not be too hard. When I had a MAG combo, I planned to split the head and cab parts, to get better handling (but sold it before getting the work done), and seem to remember that the removal of a few screws should be enough for the head to be able to slide out. Good luck!

Thanks for the heads up! This is duly noted, and I hope to remember it when I get a thru body design. That said, this must mean some veritable idiots have designed your bridge then. The problem is not thru body design, but bad implementation of it. Then again, I've noticed gazillions of bad engineering on modern instruments like electric and electronic ones, so it shouldn't come as a surprise.

Sorry to read this, man. Does this mean you can keep it at this level, or is it going to get worse even, no matter what you do? At any rate: good luck! Oh, and Mike, get a German car fer cryin out loud! Nobody deserves that kind of suffering.

Help me find my electric chops! (Song suggestions)

One of several reasons why the Concertgebouw Orchestra lets people play behind curtains, when they audition for free spots in the orchestra. That said, afterwards, applicants have to play solo in front of an audience, even when the empty position ("chair") is not the first or second one, and the player does not risk having to stand up and solo when the contracted soloist suddenly can't perform.

Hey Lloyd, Welcome! Leicestershire? Of course you mean the Welsh town of Llestershwr? At any rate, please allow me to call you Lloyd with an "L", as I still have a slight trouble with the "LL" Nice gear list! Although:
Fearful 15/6/1 (on order, arriving tomorrow!)
You'll find today is not May 31st, 2015. You're in for a wait, lad. You sure it's not a Barefaced you ordered? Enjoy the site! best, bert
Geek question.... What was custom about the 1x18?
It was really a custom 1x17.4 - - which is a regular 1x17.4 that was stretched to requirement. Glad to be of help!

Nooby Q: Little Bastard 30 into miBass 550?
BassTractor replied to BassTractor's topic in Amps and Cabs
OK, just got it confirmed from Ashdown that the MiBass volume pot as expected is post effects, so there' no being extra careful when connecting this way. I'll report once I've tried. -
Usually amp just have 4ohm output and you just connect the cabs yourself.
Here's my take after reading on bc and other sites, seeing as you've not yet received a more professional response to this. The smart thing here is that if I write something that is wrong, one of the pros will not be able to sit still, and will come out and rectify. What you describe is because usually, the amps you see have solid state power stages without an output transformer. Such a solid state power stage only requires a minimum impedance to function (we're not talking about sound here, just the requirements for the amp to not break), and does not require cabs to be connected at all, as "no cab" equals a virtually infinite impedance. Solid state power stages love this situation of doing nothing and not getting warm. They rather lie in a hammock watching their neighbour pleasure herself than actually doing her. Solid state power stages do not deserve our respect. Your LB is different. Your LB is a man (it plays with a pick!). Its valve power stage with output transformer will not function with the infinite impedance of "no cab", and does require a maximum impedance connected to the output, like for example 8 Ohm. In other words, it requires a minimum load. However, with these output transformers you're somewhat more limited, in that you can't just connect any load higher than the load that the 8 Ohm impedance would give, and though some flexibility exists, amp manufacturers will often provide two separate outputs, as in this case where the LB has an 8 Ohm output for one 8 Ohm or two 16 Ohm cabs, and one 4 Ohm output for one 4 Ohm or two 8 Ohm cabs. It's not a good idea to connect one 8 Ohm cab to the 4 Ohm output. If you really are hardheaded and destined to do something wrong, then it's a better wrong idea to put a 4 Ohm cab on the 8 Ohm output. You'll notice that this is the other way round compared to the solid state amp mentioned above. Just remember: your Little Bastard will do its neighbour, rather than hanging about in a hammock. (FWiW, I'm a man too, and I will do my neighbour, unless it's my neighbour we're talking about here. She's lovely, but I don't fancy her. I do not know what this tells you about my output transformer. )
I've heard that a 4x10 and a 1x15 isn't a very good pairing, could you explain why not?
It's not necessarily bad, but more risky. Huge difference. That said, exactly the Ashdown MAG 410 and MAG 115 are said to pair well, and I sense that those are the exact ones that you are talking about. In case: Go for it! Yes, extension chords are available, and are a lot easier than opening the combo to mount a new lead and connector. The latter would probably more satisfying in the long run though. I don't know the Peavey 450 Tour, and don't know what you know, but just to be sure: do not assume that 450W is 50% louder than 300W. It's not, and you might be hard pressed to hear the difference - depending on other characteristics. So the question becomes whether you have a good reason to shift to the Peavey. It might not be worth it. Mind you: might.

I don't know how good a tip this is, but personally, I'd tune it and look closely at some details, and then play it softly before playing it in an angry anger kind of way, and then play it softly again whilst trying to notice whether something has changed in tuning, neck angle or whatever. IME, a good instrument can handle some abuse.

My sapphire black 4-HH concurs with Cloudburst's. (and no, it's not on eBay)
