1.
Gorgeous bass, and just down the M53 from me!
Well you'd be very welcome to pop over and give it a blast anyway. Chester's very easy on the eye at this time of year!
2. Cheers - sounds pretty special too!
3. Monday morning, people looking, no one posting-type BUMP.
4. I’ve been dragging my feet about this for a few weeks but I’ve now reconciled myself to selling my beautiful Roscoe LG3000 Signature. Completed in May 2008 I bought it new from Mark at Bass Direct in September 2009. Until Thursday night I would have described the condition as new, but I noticed a slight chip in the lacquer in the middle of the top horn at a rehearsal. No idea where it came from or how it got there! I’ve tried my best to get a decent photo of it (see third photo down at the bottom). Anyway, now I’d describe it in as new condition – except for the chip in the lacquer in the middle of the top horn: Some specs: Body: Solid swamp ash in a high gloss finish with grain highlighting Neck: 7 piece laminated - maple with purpleheart centre lamination and maple and cherry accent laminations, Bolivian Rosewood fingerboard, 40mm nut width Pickups: Bartolini soap bars Pre-amp: Bartolini NTMB with master volume, pickup blend, treble and bass cut and boost and midrange cut/boost with push/pull for frequency selection Bridge: Hipshot Type ‘A’ in black with 18mm string pitch Tuners: Hipshot in black Sound-wise it’s punchy as hell. There’s a lot of love for Roscoes on BC and as soon as I started gigging with it I understood why. Mark at Bass Direct thinks Roscoes deliver the midrange better than any other basses he’s heard. I'm not about to argue - it's tight and full and really cuts through in the mix. Playability is phenomenal. The neck has a comfortable C/D profile, action is ridiculously low and the neck is fast as hell. And the neck just doesn’t move either - I’ve swapped between different strings and gauges and I’ve not had to tweak the truss rod yet. So why am I selling? Basically I’ve been kicking e-mails back and forth for a custom build from ACG and have now settled on a spec. I’ve also picked up a Zoot recently which I’ve ‘pimped’, so sadly there’s no room at the Inn for the Roscoe anymore. If you around the Bass Direct website you'll see that, with the recent price increases, a similarly specced instrument would now cost you between £2.5k - £3k. Luckily I picked it before the recent price increases. I’m looking for £1200 - but this is my final price drop; if it doesn't sell at this price I'll keep hold of it for the time being. Comes complete with letter of authenticity, allen keys, Roscoe gig bag, black Schaller strap locks (both parts!) and it's original strap buttons too. Please drop me a PM for further details if you need any or to arrange a trial. Thanks for looking, folks. Now the rest of the photos – enjoy:
5. I'm in too. Says 'You' when I'm signed in but I guess I'll show as Beerdoughboy63.
6.
Rotosound are crap.
Yeah - Jaco sounded sh*t with them, didn't he?!
7. I played Roto's for years and then had a period of about 4 years of trying others - went from steels to nickels, through D'Addario's, La Bella, Thomastick and a fair few others. I'm back to Roto Swing Bass again. I use a pretty light guage - 35-90's - and I've not really found anything else that gives me the same characteristics. Nickel strings are mostly too polite for my tastes. It's a pity because the snob in me really wants to find something that's a bit more 'gold standard', but I've not found anything to usurp my tried and trusted Roto's yet...
8.
The groovelines look awesome
Did Spoombung copyright his Zoot custom? I'm guessing not!
9. RIP, Mick. A profound influence and one who sound-tracked a time when I was finding my own bass-playing voice. So sad.
10. I'm up on Chester - which I guess is a bit too far for you. If you find yourself in the area for reason though you're very welcome to give mine a blast. Mark
11.
Peter Cook, Developing Ned Callan and work with The Ox Cheers.
Really interesting read that - many thanks. Really takes me back to my early days as a bass player, in the late 70's. There were so many really interesting instruments about then - the Guild's and Arias you've covered, but also the Ibanez's, Yamaha's, Kramers, Ovations, and a host of others I remember. We really were spoilt for choice in those days! I tried one of Peter Cook's basses myself as a youngester, when I was employed to distribute leaflets for my local music shop at The Live Music Show in London, in about 1980/81. I'm not sure if he had a stand there or not but I seem to remember he had his own event going on at the same time at a hotel near by. I also remember trying a Wal at the same time, as well as the Washburn (could have been Westone) headless that was modelled on the Status bass at the time. All fabulous instruments. Happy memories - thanks for bringing them back!
12. 4 pages of this topic and no one's posted this yet: Shame on you! Mark
13. Not normally my kind of thing at all but pleasantly surprised myself to find that I loved that! Well done, that man!
14. Dear All, I've been trying to source a Hipshot 4 string retainer from a supplier who can also get a couple of other bits from - tuners and knobs - and sort of accidentally came across this company, based in Solvakia: http://www.sollerguitars.com/e-index.php They look as though they've got a decent range of stock and, as they're EU, won't be any more expensive (a little chaper in fact) than sourcing the stuff from the States. Have any of you out there come across them or used them before please? Just wondering if they're reliable, etc. etc. Thanks, Mark
15. Quick question to the Cestrian's and other locals - any of your bands playing over the festive period? I'd love to catch a fellow BC-er in their native environment - the pub gig!
16. Welcome indeed, from a Cestrian (well, adopted Cestrian anyway).
17. Anyone BC-er's at a loose end tonight? We'd love to see you down at The Bridge Inn, Tarvin Road, Chester, (CH3 5EF for sat nav's). We're a four piece and are lucky enough to boast a great female singer, covering recent chart stuff and a selection of older 'classics'. Sod 'The X Factor' - come down and experiene 'The Fingers Factor'!
18. I like the logo on the headstock now - much less fussy.
19. I like that a lot - beautiful in its simplicity. Reminds me of my Roscoe too! What I really like about it is that it looks like a bass for playing, not a piece of art in wood! Very tasteful.
20.
It is, but to prevaricate is to lie, or to intentionally give a false impression. Not sure how it applies here, unless Bass Culture's lying to his/her significant other to give a false impression of how much money will be leaving the account each month.
You cunning linguists/grammarians, you - you're quite correct; I was prevaricating when I clearly should have been procrastinating. Now I think I'm doing both...
21. I was settled on a Zoom H1 and then noticed the Palm Track. Anyone used one? Looks virtually identical to the Zoom H2 to me but what does it sound like and what are the differences between it and something like the H1? Cheers.
22. Thanks for the replies, gents - and the link.
23. Is the H2 worth the extra money over the new H1, folks? My wife is buying me one or the other for Christmas. I really will be using it to simply record band rehearsals and, maybe, gigs. I'm really just looking for something that's simple and offers a high quality recording and can be set up in the middle of us if we're in a circle or in front of us on stage. Transferring the files to CD or into MP3 to share with the band is essential but - I guess - pretty much standard anyway. So, the question is, is it worth spending the extra on the H2 or will the H1 be good enough for my purposes? On the plus side, if the H1 suffices I may get a polo neck jumper out of the wife for Christmas too! Cheers, Mark
24. I've not had my head turned by any cabs since I've had my Barefaced Super Twelve - fabulous cab.
25.
Anyone fancy a car pool to bass direct for a butchers? We really need a good bass shop somewhere in South Wales.
Do it - you will not be disappointed. Just make sure you take your credit cards too. First time I went I came back with my wonderful Roscoe LG3000!
