1. My old setup. Must do a pic of the new rig because it's just soooo different... MIM Jazz, Little Mark 2, MB Traveler 102P
2. I'd never, ever use a music stand at a gig. Mainly because I'd only end up tripping over it. Safety is not a swear word.
3.
Which one was that? We used to do the Royal Oak Passfield - which I think has completely gone now - and another nearby that had shades of Deliverance last time we were ther. Mind you that was probably 10 years ago now
It was The Royal Exchange in Lindford. The Royal Oak re-opened and is still the main place in the area for live bands. Thing is, they're not the best at getting back to folks. Three times they said they'd call me back and didn't! That other place would have been The Passfield Oak - that's long gone. Never ever went in it myself, apparently I didn't miss much though.
4. <---- That one. An Avon Grabber copy. I bought it off a mate with a little practice amp back in 1991. It cost me £60 and 40 cigarettes. It was old back then so I've no idea how old it really is.
5. I'm no expert in this field but I advise against that Behringer setup. I got back into playing last year and bought my very first rig in June - That very same Behringer BX4500H head, only with a BA115 Cab. I knew they didn't have a great rep but thought they can't all be bad... The head is currently with Behringer on repair. It had a problem with the mains input circuitry and as a result, would only power up with certain kettle leads. One night, setting up for a gig it failed to power up from any mains lead! It took a lot of delicate wiggling and lots of gaffa tape to get switched on. I was afraid that it would get touched during the gig and die again. Our drummer has the previous 300W version of this head and his has also been temperamental with the mains. I'm flogging it as soon as it returns and buying a LittleMarkII. The cab will also be off once I get a replacement. To be fair though, the sound surprised a lot of people, especially at a recent gig. It has a "Deep" function which I use - and it sounds pretty decent really. It also has an "Ultrabass" function which is bloody awful - it sounds like a Wookiee with diarrhoea. I got what I paid for. Avoid it, seriously.
6. Back at a small pub just outside Bordon, Hants last night. We expected a low attendance due to low finances at this time of year, but the place had a pretty good turnout considering. Apparently, the landlady had been asked by regs to get us back in! It was a strange gig, as by our standards, we were terrible. Lots of bum notes, my voice packed in completely (throat infection) and some girl knocked my mic stand round as well. Bizarrely, the audience reaction was probably the best we've had! We had to change the encores due to my new vocal incapacity but kept them all happy. Now, our band ethic is to try not to play a lot of the songs that standard covers bands do. However, when the entire pub is chanting Jonny B Goode, it's best to keep 'em happy, and it certainly did! Think we'll have to do that one when we go back. Even got called for a second encore! We'll have to play badly more often.
7.
Hello, new here Sorry to revive this thread from the depths of time, Im not a bass player but I worked as part of a bass/sax duo for some time if that helps me! Hehe, I work mostly as a solo act since the bassist I worked with gave up the gigs to run his own business. I have a gig at The Ramada hotel in Maidstone and theyre asking for Public Liability (I have £1m with my MusicGuard gear insurance) and also PAT Testing (no probs have that all sorted) but theyre also mentioning whether I have a "Public Entertainments License" - surely thats down to the venue isnt it? Or is it another thing to add to the list? It always amazes me how they get away with asking for this stuff when often I get to a hotel and their plugs are hanging off the walls with expose wires, it really suprises me that they want to check if my stuff is safe. Also surely if someone gets drunk because they served them too much booze and falls on my speaker why should my insurance cover it - surely their Public Liability would be responsible!
Funnily enough, we played the Ramada hotel in Farnham recently. Although they didn't mention any Entertainments licence, they did insist on the PAT testing and Public Liability Insurance (£5 Mil though). With all the things happening, we had to set up just before lunchtime and found one of the mains sockets had an intermittent output, probably dodgy wiring. I moved along to the next socket where they'd used huge pan-headed screws instead of countersunk ones on the face plate. Because of this, we couldn't get a plug fully home and so couldn't use that one either! I informed reception who said they'd get their maintenance man to look at it later in the afternoon. We return at Five to finalise things and apparently, the maintenance man has checked the sockets and they're fine. On testing, they're still the same, exactly as they were beforehand and the response was... "Well it's too late to do anything about it now" Luckily we got hold of an extension with a plug that would actually fit into the dodgy screw socket and the gig went ahead all fine, no thanks to the hotel.
8. A grand total of 5. To be fair, I only picked my bass back up at the start of last year after a long lay off. Joined the band in May, then we had another line up change. Prior to that, my last gig had been in January 2000. Hoping do do a lot more in 2008.
9. After Saturday's gig I've decided to get a bandana. I'll see how much sweat that manages to keep out of the eyes. Does that qualify?
10. We played a wedding recently. It was my first one too and the Wedding thread proved to be absolutely brilliant with the tips on it. As we played through we had a few numbers prove pretty popular; Oasis - She's Electric and Zutons - Valerie but nothing on earth could have prepared us for what was to follow. It felt like every single guest plus the entire populations of local towns rushed the dancefloor when we started playing... the Monkees Theme. Because I'm A Believer and Daydream Believer were so common we thought we'd try a twist on that as we'd never heard anyone else ever playing it. As they all came running in from the bar I thought we were about to be trampled in the stampede. Of course, loads of them were forming lines and doing the Monkees walk from the TV show intro. I heartily recommend it. Plus, it's a classic bassline.
11. Looks like it's been a popular time for this recently! I'm 33 and just got back into it at the start of this year. Hadn't been in a band in seven years and had only really been a bass player for about 2 years then - out of necessity as I'd always just been a singer. I've still got my first bass that I bought when I was about 18 that I never really did much with. Also joined a band, back in May. Had my first ever audition and got the gig! For the first time I'll be playing a wedding at the end of this month. Loving it!
12. I agree with the others saying get rid. I'd rather work with someone who had a quarter of the ability but was committed. It's worth getting together and telling him all of this. Saying that while his ability is good, his attitude is holding everyone else up. Give him the opportunity to shape up or get shipped out.
13. I bought a Vauxhall Zafira. Of course this was to accommodate the three of us plus our new BabyBear. Absolutely nothing to do with being able to fit almost all of our band gear, honest.
14. Astounded at 4 votes for vocalists. It's a doddle to find a singer. Finding a quality, committed singer with good gear and an understanding of a band dynamic is difficult, but they weren't conditions set in the question.
15. Two. MIM Fender Jazz and that beast on the left. Funny that after 13 votes so far, nobody's ticked just one.
16.
mmmmm... pointy
17. Was always primarily a singer and started on guitar to back it up. I bought a cheap bass (in avatar pic) second hand to tinker with but didn't really do that much with it. Joined another band and converted as we couldn't get a bass player. After giving up music altogether for a few years I got back into it again this year. I just wanted to play bass again so I joined a band using old Beryl over there and later part ex'd my old Fender Telecaster towards a new Fender Jazz. Upgrade plans are ready for when we've done a good few gigs.
18. I've had my head and cab for nearly three months now. They've miraculously still not blown up and actually sound fine! Who'd have thought it...
19. OK, I've now added a few songs - all recorded live in our rehearsal room. Excuse the quality, it's just a CD burner straight from the mixing desk. It's a start, eh? Linky in sig...
20.
This is what happened to me twice, bringing in someone else behind my back. I was kept in an indie rock band because of upcoming high paying gigs for over a month whilst they kept "cancelling" practices but actually training someone else behind my back. But kept me on for those gigs. I was with them for 2 years, yet decided i wasent right for them. They may have been right but its a really sh*tty thing to do. It also happened again with a funk band i was with. Its the shittiest thing you can ever do so for gods sakes tell your singer your trying someone else out or dump him before you try the new guy out.
Nobody tell Shockwave about the new forum OK? Sorry... I feel your pain on that one. Happened to me in my last band. An old friend of the guitarist was moving back to town and on arrival was coming straight into the band taking over bass duties from me leaving me just on vocal. To be fair, he was a better player and I was predominantly a singer anyway. Next practice and I'm fired from the band citing various reasons that were frankly bollocks. The main thing was the guitarist's ego didn't like me asking questions, having an opinion or making suggestions in his band. Four months later, they hadn't been able to replace me so they split. I took a lot of crap in that band but when we played we could be damn good. If they'd all been upfront and honest who knows how we could have gone on.
21. The last band I saw were pretty terrible and did a 50/50 mix of originals and covers. I enjoyed the covers because they made me laugh and smile a bit. The original stuff was very samey. Even though the covers were ropey at least they made me move a bit. To be fair, the bassist and drummer were carrying the whole thing. The guitarists and vocals were bloody awful - even more so on the covers.
22.
Could you go through this again, please? dungeddit
Power = voltage squared divided by resistance. Therefore 100W = 8 Ohms / Voltage squared. So, voltage squared = 100 x 8 = 800 Square root of 800 is 28.3 That any clearer? This may help.
23. Mine is in the sig below... No tunes on there yet though. Hopefully this week. They'll probably sound really dodgy too!
24.
I'm confoosed now - the thing is working again. This has been happening to me a lot - things pretending to be broken
Uh-oh... get an exorcist.
