1. That bass player bloke from Muse. Forget his name (does that count as sacrilege around here?) but love his bass lines. Actually, the one advantage I've found in being unable to remember band and musician names is that I get to judge a song based upon it's own merits without any bias from who it's being performed by.
2. Hey all, I was playing last night and I noticed some slight distortion coming from my little GK MBE-III where there was none before when playing an E or below. It was pretty much an acoustic set so the amp was barely being driven. I've pulled the amp out tonight, and found the same thing. After experimenting with the volume, gain, and limiter I decided to push the amp a bit harder and use 50% on volume and gain (wooo!). Not only did the neighbouring village complain but the distortion also vanished. I wound the volume & gain back down (to their normal 1/2 settings) and the distortion was initially absent, but returned. It seems that for low volumes and low notes (bottom E or below) I'm not driving the amp hard enough. Is that even possible/plausible? Or is it simply a cry for help from my amp, in that it wants to be used a little harder? Anyone got any ideas?
3. Seems to me like he'd be better off with a stick rather than a bass really.
4.
did i see you at the harogate bass bash? Someone had a lefty shuker strung righty. That was a proper kick in the balls after seeing the beloved lefty body shape
You did indeed (twas my Shuker). Still, I recall you doing OK with it despite the strings being upside down.
It's odd that Jimi Goodwin from The Doves plays a righty Precision upside down, the neck dive must be a real pain! i've nedver understood it myself
Neck dive isn't that much of a problem (well, it wasn't on the Hohner I used to play). It's more the balance of the body. It tends to want to tip forward. And because the strap is across the back of the neck, getting beyond the 12th fret is very awkward.
5.
What about us lefties who play righty? Do we count?
What about lefties that play lefty but have their strings righty? (Not that I can make it anyway - it would be a giggle)
6. Smooth - By Santana. I recently bought the sheet music for the bass line because it was taking me ages and ages to work it out by ear from the CD. My objective for this year is to learn it off by heart. It would be a bonus to understand why it works (e.g. relate the notes back to the chords and see what's going on) but I'm prepared to settle for simply being able to play it.
7. Prefer this one tbh http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q7b8REZzW6w...feature=related
8. Also like to add my thanks for organising the event. Was very cool, and always interesting to see other bits of kit and basses.
9. Well done. Sounds like a hell of a ride. I'm with you on the structure tbh. I like to what I'm playing and in what order. The thought of having to wing stuff you don't know in front of a big crowd always gives me the heebie geebies. Luckily for me it's only happened a couple of times.
10.
http://www.manhattanentertainments.co.uk/index.php
Ta muchly. Best add me to the sticker list if you haven't already. I'll also take a punt on the raffle on the day as well so don't draw without me
11. I'm still good to come. I won't get there before 13:00 though. I'll bring my Shuker, my little GK combo, and my big red Boss effects pedal. Could do with someone PM'ing me the location though (and maybe a google-map link). Otherwise I'll have to trawl through the whole thread trying to find it.
12. I'll second the "always have strings, straps, and leads" in stock. The few times I've needed some spares my local music shop hasn't had any stock in. Needless to say I've started ordering multiple sets of strings and leads on-line because at least that way I know I've got some spare. Good luck if you go for it, but there's probably more money to be made in decent quality practice rooms (complete with well stocked bar/canteen).
13. I'll try and make this one. I'll stick it in the calendar and hopefully will be there.
14. Sadly it's a bit too far for my lot to travel too. But .... What a great idea for a thread. You are to be commended sir.
15.
The trouble with instruments like the bass is that people are encouraged to approach it casually and are offered all sorts of short cuts to perceived competence....Because of that, learners struggle to see the benefits of investing long hours in proper study....
Not me ... I was just lazy. I've since learned the benefit of hard work ... but sadly a little too late for it to be really really useful. I need to go back in time and slap myself around the head a bit I think.
16. I read the whole thread. I think I'd like some of my life back. About half way through I came to the conclusion that I actually didn't care any more. When I first started playing I was completely anti any suggestion of learning to read music. It was dull, boring, and I saw it as simply taking time away from playing bass. Now, almost 2 decades on, I am learning music theory and seriously considering learning to read music. Because I've reached the point where it will actually make me a better player. And understanding why some of the stuff I play naturally now sounds right would be useful. So while I sit in the "learn music your own way" camp, I will concede that if I'd had to learn to read music a long time ago (even 15 years ago) I'd definitely be better player than I am now.
17.
Were they 'Total Guitar' Bass Specials? I've got 3 of them somewhere, and they all came with cover CDs (which is a very good idea). ...
The "Total Guitar Bass Specials" were fantastic. I only managed to get 2 out of the 4 that they did; but they were outstanding. And the cover CD with the different lines on was superb.
18. Lost Art of Keeping a Secret by QotSA. I say learned; I've got a good enough approximation to it that only another bassist would realise that I'm doing it wrong I'm currently working on learning Smooth by Santana and .... Rob Thomas I think. Great bass line. It's going to take me a while to get all the bits together. Hmmm, what else ... Long Road to Ruin springs to mind. There's a few others but those are the more interesting ones.
19. Shame I couldn't make it. Looking forward to the next one.
20. Thanks for the heads up. I'll try and catch that.
21. Due to circumstances completely outside of my control I can't make this now; which is a real shame as I was looking forward to it (on the calendar and everything). I look forward to the next one (assuming this one goes well) as Baildon is just down the road from me. Totally bummed about this unforeseen turn of events
22. Being a Guiseley lad, I'd be very interested assuming I'm not booked for anything. I could bring along my Shuker 5 String and a small GK combo. Edit: I've checked the calendar and there is something there but it's crossed out. I'll check with my social secretary tomorrow (the Mrs) and find out what's going on. If I'm free I'll definitely be up for it although I won't get there till 13:00 at the earliest.
