1. The pictures ... which were originally posted here ... have now been moved into the right thread. You can find that thread, and specifically the pictures here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?s=&sho...ost&p=53653 Hopefully everyone is now just as confused as me
2.
Good to see you last night Darren! And looking forward to having a shufty at the Shuker next Thursday if it works out for you to call in.
Likewise. It was a most pleasant suprise. It's looking like I'll be going down to Jon's on Thursday afternoon so I'll definately give you a call when I leave. Wouldn't mind checking out that upright of yours
3. One of the bands I'm in (Like Sheep) has a singer that's OK, but probably not as good as we'd like him to be. We've all at some point (independantly) told him to get some singing lessons, but so far he's not listened. The current plan is to keep him as he's not really holding the band back or anything. However, I am intending to get some singing lessons to see if I can become a better volcalist than him. Hopefully at that point he'll be shamed into getting some lessons, or perhaps I'll sing some of the songs he struggles with and he can buy a round of drinks. But as everyone has mentioned, honesty is by far the best policy. And it's no help just saying, "you're crap - cherio". Giving them specific pointers in terms of what's wrong may actually give them the incentive to get it sorted. Good luck anyway.
4.
It's looking great, Entropic. Can't wait to read a review. What sort of music do you play? When you go to pick it up, is there any chance of you taking any snaps of mine (if you're taking a camera of course!)?....
I'm in a couple of covers band (links in sig.) but it's basically blues/pop/rock. Both of the bands I'm in cover a reasonably diverse range of music so I almost get to do a bit of everything. If you PM me the details then I'll do my best to take a camera with me when I go down next week. I can't promise I'll remember the camera (or to take any pics.) as old age has trashed my mental faculties somewhat .. but I'll do my best.
5. I pick my bass up next Thursday (30th August). Expect pictures and an update real soon. I've not had any pics since the ones I posted earlier in the thread as I told Jon not to bother as I figured the finished article would have more wow factor that way.
6. The soundtrack from Kid Chameleon (Sega Megadrive) had a really groovy bassline to it. Some of the music shipped with TrackMania and Roller Coaster Tycoon are pretty decent - with some complex bass work in places. The GTA-San Andreas "theme tune" that plays during the menus is all bass. Even though I know what the notes are and can play it I still don't really understand why it works as well as it does, I'm sure there was a particularly cool bassline in one of the background music tracks on the original Unreal. Forget which one now. And if I remember right the background track from Tempest had a very good bassline as well.
7.
Hey Darren Great news on you bass mate. I don't suppose you fancy taking your camera with you when you go. I could really do with some updates on mine and I don't like to keep bugging Jon about it.
Heh .. once I know when I'm going to get the bass I'll PM you and get some details. I'm tied up this coming Saturday (fairly typical that) so it will slip to the following week at the earliest. Possibly another week on top. We'll have to see how work/family stuff pans out.
8.
I smell celery.
Can't stand the stuff myself. I'm sure Jon could provide a detailed explanation as to exactly why the particular strange and other-worldly combination of LEDs I originally wanted wouldn't function. It's probably down to current and voltage differences between the blue and red LEDs. But to be honest I'm not that interested.
9.
... The set ...
Some nice songs in there. We do Nutbush City Limits as well. It's a cracking song. I'd never heard it before until I had to learn it. There's a couple of others in the list that are also in our set (Hard to Handle roxors), but there's a fair few I've never heard of. I grew up in a musical vaccum so I've been filling in the gaps over the last couple of years. I've not heard of most of the songs you've got listed so I'll have to track them down and have a listen. Thanks again for the list.
10. I've just had an update from Jon. My bass will be ready this week. However since I'm off on holiday it'll probably be another week or two before I actually get to pick it up. Personally I'd simply cancel the holiday but I suspect that would be a life shortening move (if the wife didn't kill me the kids would). The reason the LEDs didn't work as expected was because I was mixing blue and red LEDs. They have different current and voltage requirements which means that you can't mix them. A shame really, but it's not the end of the world. I guess it's always possible that the anticipation will kill me first.
11. What was your set? Always looking to steal stuff that gets people to boogey.
12.
...Why did you choose jumbo fretwire?
Essentially because it's a little more hard-wearing (hence the stainless steel fretwire) than the thinner stuff. I tend to dig into the strings quite hard as well as bending the strings a bit, and so didn't want fret-wear to be a problem for a year or several. Having said that, since I got my GK my playing style has softened so maybe it wouldn't be so much of an issue. When I compared them at Jon's workshop there really wasn't that much to choose between them. I guess the clincher was that the bass I'm playing at the moment uses Jumbo fretwire and I've always found it pretty comfortable.
13. I've just had an update from Jon. He tried to wire up the LEDs and they didn't work as he was expecting. After a conversation with the SIMS Custom chaps he's had to return the bass to get them to look at it. He's expecting is back either today or tomorrow. If the bass does actually come back over the next day or so then if everything goes well I should have it by the end of the month.
14. The trick is to put the superglue on before you play, to prevent the blisters in the first place. By the end of the gig the super-glue will have worn off from the playing and you'll be blister free.
15. Did you see anything of mine? It is (in theory at least) almost done; to the point where I was hoping Jon would tell me it was done this week (no such luck).
16. At the risk of duplicating many recent topics, I thought there ought to be a poll. Maybe a mod could add the poll to one of the other threads or something. Anyway, hopefully I've covered all the basses with the poll options. Edits: Would help if I could type
17. Want me to PM you the tab I've got worked out for it? It's probably not 100% perfect but it's pretty close (even if I do say so myself). We thought about doing it in Like Sheep. We could all play the individual bits, but when it came to putting it all together we were rubbish.
18.
...From what I can tell, it seems to be waiting for third parties that slows the build time down, like pickup manufacturers....
That is certainly part of the reason my bass has taken so long to build. The LEDs took a long long time to fit apparently.
19. Lovely +1. That's going to be beautiful. Now I know what's Jon's been up to instead of finishing my bass
20.
I forget exactly where he said he was going except it was near Brough.
Brough, that's in the middle of nowhere! A quick google threw this up though .... http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&hl=e...p;z=10&om=1 @Tinman - I love your sig. It made me chuckle. So far my Shuker has taken around 6 1/2 months. Thankfully I'm not given to biting my fingernails.
21. I've just finished speaking to Jon. He's in the process of clearing as much up as he can and preparing for the deluge forecast over the weekend. Sandbags and wellies seem to be the order of the day. His wood store escaped from being flooded (which is a great relief - some of the stuff in there is fantastic) and he's basically got the floor area around some of the machines to dry out. He's not planning on moving anything back until after the weekend at the earliest. The best bit of news is that my bass is 2-3 weeks away. Rar!
22. Ineresting. As another "upside down" lefty I'll have to give that technique a go. I'm not a big fan of slap bass, but it would occasionally be nice to have an option to play it. I normally get by by popping with both fingers (and my thumb) but building up any sort of speed is quite hard.
23. I could probably get one of the bands I'm in to play. Can't vouch for the quality of the music though :/
24.
ive seen a fwe of these shuker basses on basschat, theyre really nice. im guessing theyre handmade by Jon Shuker by what ive seen from these comments.
You guess correctly young sir.
