1. i've heard some Brad Mehldau pieces but nothing has grabbed me like this just has - i don't know how this has been off my radar for so long Larry Grenadier on bass sounding gooooodddddd http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3wy33KFaFY&feature=related
2. i had the good fortune of seeing him play the enormous room at a clinic about a year ago - i didn't know too much about him before then but i sure do now lol it was seriously mind blowing seeing this guy play - he's truly mastered the instrument. another thing that struck me was his lengthy and thorough warm up routine (which is about the only thing of his that i've managed to successfully emulate) honestly though - this guy...
3. has anyone seen any video demos / sound samples of the sfx red dragon? it looks awesome
4. i used to play a load of iron maiden stuff when i was learning to use my 3rd finger for picking, but i found it was only really useful for 'gallop' style rhythms - for more expressive use of the technique try some jaco stuff (eg. 'come on, come over') - even if you aren't a fan of the music it'll get you into string skipping and more in-depth applications. then chuck your thumb into the mix http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rW0Hoxo32FA
5. thanks guys - plenty of food for thought there - time to go out and start testing pedals
6. right...... i'm looking for a good overdrive sound to play a solo with - it's a pop arrangement so it needs to be not too aggressive i'm not sure if i'm searching for an impossible tone i was kind of inspired by the bass note at the beginning of Marcus Miller's arrangement of 'Frankenstein' can anyone recommend anything suitable? I've already tried using a big muff but that was way too aggressive and saturating. cheers James
7. i can't see many drummers going for this over roland v-drums
8.
Ooh the Jack Bruce looks canny, I could defo fancy a fretless one of them :-)
+1
9. i thought that was going to go somewhere...... apparently not. its probably a good vehicle for those starting out with solo techniques or 2 hand tapping..... but i thought he was going to do something amazing with the solo section! sigh....
10. thanks guys - i never know whats right for discontinued models :/
11. http://www.cashconverters.co.uk/auction-item/419580/the-groove-bass-guitar .....or is that about the right price?
12. hi yeah sorry its long gone
13. I'm sure this has already been raised but i'd like to raise awareness of this guy http://evanmarien.com/ he's probably the first player i've heard in about 5 years who's really doing something exciting (<-that isn't meant to cause controversy or insult). love to know what the rest of you think p.s. the drummers i've heard/seen him play with are pretty damned awesome too
14. thanks - i always love how helpful everyone on this forum is!
15. thanks everyone - that's really helpful is this where i say "that's what i thought all along"? lol
16. Hey guys - quick question...... i'm looking for a new cab setup for my trace elliot v-type head (its the 300h with the valve preamp) i'm probably going to go for a 2x 1x 12 option because i don't always do gigs that need the 2x12 rig but here's my issue: i've been told that if you run an all valve head with a mismatching cab (eg. a 4ohm head with an 8ohm cab) it'll damage the head - just wondering if the same rule applies to heads with just the valve preamp? this'll hugely effect my purchase so any info would be amazing cheers James
17. mine did the same - it wasn't really audible live but for recording it was pretty much useless - i couldn't remedy it so sold it on in the end (the new owner only ever uses it for live work) my set up was p bass, ashdown mag 300 (are you noticing the hissing in your live sound? your eqpt is probably a bit more sensitive than mine was)
18. didn't quintin berry used to be/ still is in the house band for the jimmy kimmel show or the late late show or something? (not the letterman band obv )

20.
Howdy! Seriously cool bass!
+1 to be fair, i think you'd have a really hard time not loving playing that bass
21. Well thanks for that - set my GAS off a treat.... this is officially on my radar http://www.nashguitars.com/tb_basses.html
22. i picked up a micro q-tron at a good price (ie cheaper than anything else) and i'm really pleased with it - pros: small batteries last forever 1/3 of the price of anything else i found that wasn't complete crap funk at the push of a button cons: it's a bit all-or-nothing with the drive setting not hugely versatile - out of the 3 main settings i've only really found one setting thats usable for what i do can boost the volume significantly when engaged
