2.
If that is Noel Kelehan late of RTE then I am sorry to say that he is in full time care but they say "He can still play the piano, read music and change key at will." I can not say when that was put on the 'net however.
Yes, it is...unfortunately...the late.... Noel Kelehan. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noel_Kelehan
 3. While we are on the subject of great Irish bands, does anyone remember "Ozone" ? Hard to find anything from them on You Tube. Could only find this "Soundcloud" track. Sadly only one band member is alive today. https://soundcloud.com/mr-whippy-soundsystem/spacers-delight-9-15
 4. My initial response is , yes, he should pay. Why should the rest of the band be out of pocket, because he can't make it ? Granted, emergencies can happen at any time, but again, that's not the fault of the band. Having said the above, I suppose it would depend on a few things : 1. Does this guy make a habit of pulling out of practice at the last minute. 2. The type of "emergency". 3. The general attitude of the band members.
 5.
I have forgotten how to Private Message
Just click on the user name. Then at the top, to the right hand side, click on..."Send me a message".
 6. Hobbiest here. Play a few gigs a month.
 7. There has been no mention so far about developing good (and more importantly...safe..) technique. Your teacher(s) should have covered this in the first lesson. While nothing is written in stone, there are tried and tested ways to play the bass, which allow you to play to the best of your potential, and at the same time, avoid possible injuries at a later time. It's not much good knowing the theory, if you have not got the physical wherewithal to get it across efficiently and safely. Below are some clips to get you started. See tips numbers 26 & 27 here for playing with a pick : https://www.carolkaye.com/www/education/tips1.htm https://www.youtube....+bass+left+hand https://www.youtube....h?v=uIYuqTsUlyM
 8. Seems like a great read. Just ordered.
 9.
Would they have liked it more if I had woven some intricate pattern of harmonics around the simple tunes? I suspect not.
I agree with your sentiments on Jaco and Wooton. Neither light my candle either. However, they can groove when the song requires it.
 10.
My reason for having a dig is because of the apparent desire to link it to Jazz.
God forbid that the elite genre that is jazz, should be contaminated by being assosiated with a song loved by the masses.
 11.
No hate, however when your my age, these guys are not relevant to me. The guys I like and have influenced, me cone out of the 60s & 70s. Blue
A very closed minded attitude, if you don't mind my saying. I always assumed that a good all 'round musician was open to all types of music and to playing with and listening to young musicians. For example, drummer Tony Williams was only seventeen years old when he first joined Miles" band. Miles always looked forward, never back. The bluesman John Mayall is renowned as a talent scout as much as a musician. Down the years, a lot of his band's consisted of musicians that were half his age and younger.
 12.
He obviously must have something going on otherwise U2 would have fired him years ago, but you know the thing is after all this time, I'm still struggling to work out what it actually is.
That's because he possesses a hidden talent.
 13.
Surely anyone who's been playing for that long would be able to do something more impressive, and yet he doesn't. Isn't that remarkable restraint? Purely playing for the song and never once indulging yourself? Pretty impressive if you ask me ...although obviously he could be sh*te and playing at the top of his ability, we wouldn't know
If he is happy doing what he does...and getting well paid for it...good luck to him. Just because he chooses not to anything else, does not necessarily mean that he can not. You are correct...we wouldn't know. So why jump to conclusions ?
 14.
I'm game for that.
What ???...Giving Clayton credit for playing what's required ?
 15.
NancyJohnson described Adam Clayton as talentless about two days ago.
I have never been a fan of U2 or their music. However, as I see it..talentless or otherwise...Clayton plays what the music requires. Perhaps the criticism should be directed more towards the actual music itself. Playing complicated busy bass lines (assuming Clayton could..) to most of U2's material would sound ludicrous. As for the hatred towards some bassists, I don't think it is hatred as such, just snobbery. The general thinking is that unless you can mesmerise people with flash playing and technique, you are not a good ("talentless" was the word used) bassist. There is room for both simplicity and complexity in bass playing. The "real" skill is in knowing what the song requires.
 16. Yep !...try before you buy, where possible is always a good thing. I'm curious about your LH500 as there is one going at a bargain price on a local forum.
 17.
His playing is about technicality that can be be used in many different musical situations. It's not genre .
I think you are missing the point. If I am reading correctly the general gist of the "not pushed on Jaco" people (in which I include myself), no one has a problem with technicality, except when it seems (to some ears) to be simply for the sake of it.
 18.
Just had the kids dancing around the living room to it. Don't know what that says about musical integrity. But it says a lot about musical connection
No one said that Jaco's playing/music does not connect with people...just not.. ALL people. Same goes for all genres and artists.
 19.
But to listen to this bass from Jaco Pastorius and not get something from it is just alien to me.
Just stop for a moment and consider how much of a sad and dismal old world this would be, if everyone liked the same things. I find it alien that a lot of my friends don't get something out of the music that I like. Thankfully, that's the way of the world. Did you really expect to post something on a forum and get everyone to agree ?
 20.
It's a fair point and most people don't like technical playing. I don't a lot of the time. But i also feel it's ignorant to not like something just because its's technical or musical. It always depends on the requirements of the music. Even The Stranglers have shredding on No more heroes for example. I also dislike the idea stuff has to be simple to be real and worthwhile, the Indie/punk mentality. I really like Indie/punk. I like most forms of music, even bloody Country now which i used to hate.
I agree with what you say. Perhaps I was a bit vague in my earlier post. The point I was making was that just because a player is technical, complex, and flashy (talking generally here) does not necessarily mean that what he/she plays communicates with the listener. It may communicate with fellow bass players alright. Yes, it is possible, but for me, not in Jaco's case. The OP makes my point for me in post #11 when he talks about the bass playing around...rather than being the music. I do like some of his work with Joni Mitchell.
 21.
Sometimes amazing technical playing and musicianship touches people or talks to them!
I agree. I was just giving my opinion that Jaco's amazing technical playing does not "talk" to me. Going by some of the posts in this thread, I am not alone.
 22.
But it was more about the bass playing around the music.
I'm sure that most won't argue with this. Amazing technical bass playing is one thing. Most people would not deny Jaco's skills here. Playing music that touches people, and "talks" to them, is an entirely different matter.
 23.
Me too. I am in awe of Jaco's abilities but outside of his work with Joni Mitchell his actual music does little for me.
+1. No doubt the man was a technical genius on the bass, but his music leaves me cold.
 24.
The typos in the book - you can find corrections at Ariane's website, it is NOTHING MAJOR
Perhaps not, but the point I was making earlier, is how does a person starting out know when to check the back of the book for errors ? I have lots of bass books which I paid the same price for, and none contain error corrections.
