  8. Timing: the difference between a good bass player and an amazing bass player (and rythmn section too!) I don't think its really about being mathematically right on the beat. For me, it's all about the feel of the song and having the ability to move the beat around that fraction to turn an otherwise mundane chord progression into something lively and interesting and musical.
  9. Ok Egor, my evil plan has taken a step nearer to fruition. First, we buy the black five string version. Then we take our trusty chop saw to the headstock and replace it with a ball end holder. Then we add Status style tuning keys at the body end of the bass. And then Egor, having solved the infamous neck dive issue, WE TAKE OVER ZEE WORLD HA HA HA HA HA

  12. For me, the forum is fine as is. Having been around here through the various incarnations since Gerald or Gerard first got the idea rolling in the UK, I feel right at home with the Kiwi/Ped format. I'm sure the place needs some finance to keep it going and to maintain bandwidth, uptime etc etc. I have suggested before the pay-to-sell idea where the advertiser pays to place a 'for sale' add. If you look at the number of threads in the for sale sections, even a nominal listing fee should be sufficient to fund the ongoing maintenance and development costs of the site. Failing that, merchandise is probably another fine way to raise income (just look at the uptake for the 'orange' basschat shirts!). I'd be happy to pay a subscription to access this place, but I recognise that others may not either be able or willing to do the same, and I dislike the two-tier approach adopted by some other forums as being eliteist and clique'y (two things I hate with a passion).
  13. Ok peeps, I've gone with the PJB Bass Buddy care of our own Vern-Icepick and wow, what can I say. Big fat warm tone on my home recordings whereas without the PJB it was just a little flat and lifeless. Hopefully, the studio guys will have the same experience later this month. BTW just to clarify, without the preamp and plugging straight into the desk, my J-Retro equipped Overwater J5 wasn't really 'driving' the mic input on the desk. Yes, we had to back the trim gain thing back a bit to stop it distorting, but in backing it off, I seemed to loose some depth or oompth. With the PJB, I can back the gain on the bass buddy back to avoid distortion but still provide a big fat signal to my desk. Does that make sense, I hope so 'cause thats what seems to be happening? Anyway, I'm not/will not be eq'ing the bass using the preamp but I will be horrendously tempted to leave the compressor switched on as this is the most bass friendly and musical compressor I've come across so far and all from just one knob too.   14. John's preamps are the dogs doodahs imho. I've got two J-Retro's (Overwater J & Fender J) and I've got his BTB & Mid-Stack in my Precision mutant and they all sound perfect to me. Big +1 for John's work and interesting to hear that his Stingray pre is similarly good as my next project is going to be Stingray based.

We tried this the last time too, but the engineer thought the DI was too noisy to be used and that the miked sound (through one of my Goliaths) was too rock. I should probably mention that I'm recording with a female vox and acoustic guitar duo who just want some bass to widen out the sound spectrum on their recordings.

Dial in any extra EQ on the desk.[/quote] Funnily enough, I tried both my punch factory and bass exciter on the last session, but found the (digitally) recorded signal to be highly coloured by the aphex DI in a way which the engineer really disliked. As I'll be working with the same producer/engineer team this time, I thought I'd have a look around for something different.
