TIA[/quote] I've also got my 1996 USA J DLX V up for sale on here! Mine came with sealed back Fender badged machines which look suspiciously like Gotoh's to me. I replaced mine with Schaller ultralites and still have the original fenders as well. I could be pursuaded to put the stock Fender's back on my bass and sell the Schallers if your interested? As to the QC, the neck on mine is really well drilled with all the holes uniform. Could it be that somebody has opened out the holes in your head to fit bigger elephant ear open back tuners before realising that you cant get 5 of them in a line on that headstock? Also, my bass has a ferrule pressed in to each tuner post hole from the front. If you dont have these, you'll need to get a set to refit the original type machines.

I used to be a 15's man, then became a 10's man. To me, 10's felt tighter and more responsive plus, and probably because there is normally more 10's in the same box than 15's, I've never had 10's crap out on me and fart the way some single 15's have in the past. I've tried the 1x15 under 4x10 option, and found that the 15 wasn't really adding anything, so I now run two 4x10's. But on Sunday we played a charity do, back line provided. I had to use a 1x15 Line 6 LD300 combo, going up against 2 Marshall powered 4x12's and apart from the fact it was sitting on the floor and could have done with being lifted up a little bit closer to my ears, it coped really well with my 5 string, even at the quite high on stage volumes we play at. Perhaps 15" speaker technology has improved to the point where I should look again? Maybe a well designed 1x15 sitting under my Schroeder 21012 would be my perfect setup, as I love the clarity of the Schro but find it lacks that real low end thump? Oh gawd, here we go again........

If your handy, why not buy a piece of gold plastic sheet used for making scratchplates etc and make one out of that? It will then be shiney and gold

FWIW I run two Golly III's under an SM1500, both have the shiney chrome speaker grills and I haven't had a rattle out of either of them. My first one was part of a trade so difficult to put a 'value' on, whereas my second one cost £250 but to be fair was in a well used condition. Yep, the are heavy but I can lift them on my own, and they make a righteous sound imho

Most B&Q stores sell steel sheet that's punched in a variety of patterns. It's not cheap but will be cheaper than having one custom made.

My two-penneth is that when playing a 34" B string, I feel a 'lag' between the pluck and the note developing its full bloom. On my 35" I don't feel this. This might sound daft but I spend a lot of time listening to my bass through headphones and I can definately hear this lag

I've got them in my Overwater paired up with a J-retro and they give a big fat full sound, slightly retro, but they can snarl and snap as well. Surprised no one has mentioned this (sorry if you have and I missed it) but isn't the advantage of the MM design the fact that the saddles on the MM are locked against sideways movement by the two outer bolts whereas on the Fender the saddles can move laterally (albeit constrained by their neighbours and string tension)? Most replacement Fender designs make a lot of the fact that their design locks the saddles in, but this could just be marketing bullsh1t. I know that on some cheaper copies of Fenders I'd find the E string saddle would move away from the A string saddle after a while, but in truth, I think the only difference was in string to string volume.

With all the sanding I've done to get the top in decent condition, that had reduced to a little under 1.25mm. Whilst sanding back the eighth lacquer coat, I noticed that the top had split from both mounting holes for the three-way and was about to collapse! So i've had to make a Dutchman to go in the control cavity, stick this in place, then machine a round edged groove where the switch slot was, so that the switch now sits slightly recessed into the top. It's actually turned out quiet well and I'm pleased with the result but this has put the finishing back a bit as I've had to stain and finish the new groove to match the rest of the top. I'm away at the present, but will post some pictures of my solution at the weekend.

At the winning bid of £215, I sure hope it's a simple fix!

Just a quick "no photos" update. The body is now going through the several (i.e. 12'ish) coats of lacquer to build up the shine. I'm now down to wirewool between coats and I'm really pleased with the finish I'm getting. I'm not going to give an estimate of when I'll finish as work keeps getting in the way of progress

I'm using the Line 6 G50 which is absolutely bloody marvellous imho. I love the cable simulation too, as I found the raw sound too hifi for my liking, which is probably the result of playing through cables for err thirty odd years
